Lott gets to personally train the rookies for about 4 weeks after the OTA's are over with no distractions from veterans or having to deal with over 80+ players during OTA's and off season workout program. He gets to pretty much go one on one with these guys.

I have complete faith that if a rookie's head is on straight Lott will make the most physically prepared rookies in the league every year. By head on straight I mean the opposite of Branch and Buster Davis who refused to get to the weight Lott thought he should be at and blew of his workouts and one of the main reasons he was cut.

What brings this on you ask? One, bordom, and two Urbans recent blog about Wells. Then in Urbans newest blog posted today Beanie Wells who has had the least amount of time with Lott has alread lost almost 20 pounds to get to Lotts recomended weight of 225, all the while growing his speed, strength and conditioning. Herman Johnson came to his first workout at 382 pounds. Towards the end of the OTA's Lott already had him to the 360 range well on to Lotts recomended 350 to 355 weight range. By now about 3 weeks since the last OTA Johnson might already be at that weight, the most athletic Johnson has ever been, Coaches had so much faith in Lott making Herman the most athletic he has ever been they started out his training process as an OT instead of his naterual position of OG. Breaston went from a weakling return man his rookie year, never being expected to be anything else ever to the best #3 WR in the NFL, and he did it becuase he made Lott his best friend last offseason.

So in all with Lott, as long as we keep picking rookies with the right mental makeup, I think we will continue to have good drafts from top to bottom that actually contribute under this regime, more so then 95% of the rest of the league.

Good post Joe... It's never one thing, but rather a culmination of parts and pieces that bring about this sort of performance. Clearly, our scouts and player personnel are doing a great job indentifying the right talent to bring into the organization. And of course, once in his hands Lott is keeping up his end of the bargain!

I agree, Note that I am only talking physically, as you said its only a piece and being put in the correct scheme and other parts is another animal altogether. But its a great start.

Breaston is a good example of this, but we should point out that Breaston did it in his second year.

So in reality we should be keeping our eyes on Hightower, DRC, Campbell, and others who are in their second season with the Cardinals.

As Lott calls him..."Little Jim Brown"....quiet the resemblance....The guy has got a ton of God given talent...he has already lost 18lbs...sounds like his "Mind IS Right"...just wish he would have taken #32...

Every time I see Lott I get excited (but not in a gay way). The guy has so much energy and enthusiasm. I love it. I'm so glad he's a Cardinal. That he has the reputation of being one of the best conditioning guys in the league doesn't hurt either.

I too have been waiting in anticipation of seeing how LAST years rookies have muscled and toned up during the two off-seasons they have had with Lott. I love that the scouting team is bringing in so much potential talent, and love it even more that Lott is then turning them into fine-honed machines. We have sooooo many things going right with this organization right now that it is almost scary. I can't wait to view the results.

I really hope Garvin has game to go with his 2% body fat and unmatched straight line speed. Many track stars have tried, few have succeeded in the NFL.

I wonder what Lott's advice/instructions are to Garvin?

1) Look up!
2) Catch the damn ball!
3) Secure the damn ball!
4) DO NOT drop the damn ball!
5) Score TD's

Once you have mastered 1 > 5, then we may be impressed!

Two Things From That Article Excite Me

1. Lott.

2. Cardinal Tradition
There's only one Camelback Mountain. There's only one set of rookies (ours) who have to run it. Other teams, no doubt, have their own traditions, but I've always felt that, in the past, the Cardinals were more of a "do things the way most other NFL teams do them" organization that had few if any special things they did that made them unique (i.e. better) than other teams.

We have John Lott. We have Camelback.

Well, coach Lott has now finished with the rookies and have sent them on their way until the begining of camp. Today they finished with a conditioning test and then each player met with Coach Lott to receive their marching orders for the next couple of weeks.

At the symposium they also did not miss a beat in training as they were awoken at 5:00 and ran and lifted prior to breakfast and meetings.

Hey, these early "birds" are looking to capture all the worms!

I believe the rookie symposium was held in San Diego. Does this mean that Lott went to San Diego also to work them out, or were they self-directed?

The symposium was in Palm Beach Florida this year; and no Coach Lott did not travel with them but they had a team rep with them to oversee them during their trip.
