Heading into Sunday's matchup with Michigan State, the Auburn men's basketball program was on a mission to secure its second Final Four appearance in program history. At the center of its attainable ambition was SEC Player of the Year and consensus first-team All-American, Johni Broome. Everything the Tigers do is centered around Broome's brilliance as an all-around big man.
After Broome suffered a scary injury around halfway through the second half, everyone in the arena rightfully held their breath. While going up to block a shot, Broome landed awkwardly on his knee and right elbow. He was able to get off under his own power and walk off the court for further evaluations, but he was still clearly hurting.
As concerns swirled about Broome's status, the Auburn star returned to the game several minutes later, Willis Reed style, to raucous applause from the Auburn faithful on hand:
After Tracy Wolfson clarified that X-rays were negative on Broome's injuries, he went back to work almost immediately after checking back in. Broome snagged a one-arm rebound — because his right arm clearly felt uncomfortable — then drained this nails 3-pointer right after:
Man, that is special. You can't teach that kind of toughness and resolve in a high-level competitive moment.
Broome stayed in the game until the end, helping Auburn clinch a 70-64 win and advance to a Final Four matchup with Florida next weekend. For Auburn's sake, here's hoping Broome's injuries won't linger and that he heals up well over the next week.
