Jonathan Allen had been through it all in Washington. A first-round pick in 2017, Allen spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with Washington. So, when he was injured last season, it was disappointing for Allen. The Commanders were finally winning, and Allen was sidelined with a pec injury.
Fortunately for Allen, it was only a partial tear, and he returned for the final two games of the regular season and all three playoff games. While the Commanders came up short in the NFC championship, exciting times were ahead for Washington.
Unfortunately, Allen will not be part of future Washington teams. With one year of non-guaranteed money remaining on his contract, the Commanders gave Allen permission to seek a trade. After no trade was found, they released Allen ahead of free agency, allowing him to land in a good situation. He did, signing a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, also one of the NFC's best teams.
For the first time since leaving Washington and signing with Minnesota, Allen spoke to Rich Eisen about leaving the Commanders.
Allen is classy. While he wanted to remain in Washington, he appreciated the team's giving him time to find a good spot. Allen grew up in Ashburn, Virginia, minutes from the team's headquarters. He was a leader for the franchise the moment he put on the burgundy and gold. Allen went through many ups and downs with the Commanders, but at least he had the chance to experience last season.

Former #Commanders DE Jonathan Allen on why he left for the Vikings:
“New regime came in, they had a path they wanted to follow and I wasn’t a part of that so I mean gotta give them a lot of credit for doing me a favor by releasing me…”
