Jude LaCava never worked in Fresno. He graduated from college and then worked at a radio station in Toledo. After that he was at KTAR, then Fox10.

That happened here in Phoenix years ago. Not with Jude LaCava though. With a white haired newscaster named Bill Close.

Wikipedia:

On May 28, 1982, at about 5:00 P.M., Joseph Billie Gwin, wanting to "prevent World War III" forced his way into KOOL-TV studio, fired a shot from his gun, the butt struck Louis Villa in the back of the head, Gwin held Villa in a chokehold, at gunpoint for nearly 5 hours. Gwin took 4 people hostage and demanded nationwide air time. 2 hostages, Jack Webb and Bob Cimino, were released 3 hours later. At 9:30 P.M. anchorman, Bill Close read a 20-minute statement as Gwin sat next to him holding a gun under the table, Close took Gwin's gun after the statement and set it on the table.

They had Bill Close on Fox about a month ago to relive that experience. I was only 1 when it happened, but man did that guy keep it cool during a very scary situation

Same thing happened in L.A. in 1987 on KNBC during the 4 o'clock news. A mental patient, in the studio as a guest, held a gun to the head of David Horowitz who was the station's consumer reporter. (Not the political writer.) He gave Horowitz a statement to read. After Horowitz finished reading it the guy put down the gun and John Beard, the news anchor who was sitting next to Horowitz, immediately reached over and grabbed it.

It was later determined that the gun was a fake. Which led Horowitz to start a large campaign which resulted in the banning of "look-alike" guns in California. If I remember correctly even kid's toy guns had to be an unusual color or have a red mark around the barrel.

I was watching that evening. Dinner was late.
