June 1st. Dbacks 11 over 500. 1/2 game out of first. Only one team has more wins in all of MLB

At what point is it appropriate to adjust expectations of this team (if you haven't already done so)? Coming into this season, there is nobody that wouldn't predicted anything close to this. Are we at a point where the expectation for this team should be the post season - they are 5 1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals for the final Wild Card spot??
I don't think I'm there yet... I guess I can't totally disregard that nasty feeling in my gut that at any given moment, this team will come crashing down to earth...

i'm at the point where i expect them to be in the wild card race until the last week or so. This has been fun so far. Hopefully Pollock comes back soon and is healthy for the rest of the season!

Wait, what the hell am I thinking????

Let me respond to this thread properly...

This is all a fluke, we suck, guarateed last place. Goldy bust, Greinke overpaid, Robbie Ray has farty pants, Pollack cant stay healthy, Rodney drinks his own pee. Total trash organization, going nowhere.
:stick::stick::stick:

Phew, that was close. You're welcome Dbacks!

I was just in Vegas and the odds of winning the World Series for the Diamondbacks was 15/1.

I'm all in now. IMO Rodney might be the only thing holding us back. We have a good team we need a guy that locks down wins.

Agree on Rodney holding us back.
I'll add that the whole bull pen has been looking shaky since the middle of the White Sox series. They need to be nails for this team to get into the playoffs. :)

Who would have thunk it?
I didn't. It seemed like they really didn't change much before the season except trade away some players I liked.

But unlike last year, things are clicking. Starting pitching as been great at times, and good enough the rest of the time, the bull pen has been pretty good and some of the disabled players haven't really taken a big hit on the performance of the team.

If you told me where they would be Jun 1st before the season, I would not have believed you.

It has also helped that the Dodgers started off not so great and who would have though SF would be in the basement.

Anybody we can go get? (pitching wise)

I dont understand baseball free agency. I just know there are buyers and sellers. And as we are contenders, that makes us buyers.

There will always be SPs available, we probably don't have the assets to get a top arm. The White Sox had an insane asking price for Jose Quintana before the season began and he hasn't been too great. Sonny Gray has had a couple good games and a couple duds and may be available from the A's. Ervin Santana from the Twins is having a good start of the season and should be available at the deadline.

Q - Why can we just go get a SP and use him wherever we need him? Even as a mid-guy or closer?

I remember in the world series in 2001 didnt Randy and Curt both pitch in the same game once?

I'm concerned about Drury (offense), Corbin (inconsistent) and Left Field (so NOT a Tomas fan)...

Schilling and Johnson both pitched in game 7 of the world series. The Giants did this with Madison Bumgarner in the 2014 World Series too. It was game seven and they wanted the season decided by their best pitcher. It makes sense if you aren't worried about the next game. Over 162 games, you would want to have your best pitchers ready to go every 5.

I dont hide my naivety when it comes to baseball. I have no shame in asking dumb questions.

Why cant we just fill our bull pen with the best pitchers possible? Meaning the weakest guy might be the #1 guy on another team? Just pay out the nose for a ridiculous collection of arms.

Cost would be one deterrent. A typical bullpen is about 12 arms deep. You can't give out 12 contracts the size of Zack Greinke's. On top of that, there are greater financial incentives given to starting pitchers (because they are more valuable) and so most players who pitch would rather start than relieve.

Even the best teams in baseball don't always have five great starters let alone bullpen arms that would be able to start on other teams.

lol shoot even I know you cant have 12 Greinkes.

Is it always just a cost issue?

I was actually thinking it might be a mentality thing. A closer is a better closer than a starter because maybe closers are better equipped for the pressure.
