I believe you may be suffering from a relatively new condition called "Kelemeteitis". It's a condition where someone over-evaluates a player based on preseason snaps against terrible opponents and doesn't necessarily properly weight his lack of contribution during the year.

I suffered from that once or twice.

It is nasty, but not as bad as PrestonParsiocosis. That is a crippler.

You know what you are getting with Sowell. A hard worker who is not good enough to start at the left tackle position. Sowell needed help to block quick pass rushers. He is a good back up and that's it. That position needs to be up graded.

I don't understand why you would rank Watford (who never saw the field) ahead of Sowell (who started a dozen games), Massie (who was active more or less all season and was seeing the field at the end of the year), and Potter (who got some actual on-field snaps as well).

I would rank Watford ahead of Sowell, Massie and Potter because this regime drafted Watford in the 4th round last year which means they are invested in him more than the others. It isn't to say he is better than Sowell, Massie and Potter, but the team has more invested in him which is why I don't believe he would be cut before them. Sowell, as you have stated, is very replaceable and both Massie and Potter seem to be on the outside looking in. Also, Massie and Potter were acquired by the previous regime which means the current group has little attachment to them.

Actually, I need to amend that list since I did stipulate value to the team...moving Colledge to last due to his huge cap hit. He likely the first cut.

Cooper
Sendlein
Fanaika
Watford
Sowell
MAssie
Potter
Colledge

Winston - n/a free agent

I dunno. Keim was head scout when we drafted Massie, and Massie is from Keim's old stomping grounds in the Southeast. If Watford had more value than Massie, Massie wouldn't have been getting PT late in the season while Watford was wearing sweats on the sideline.

I agree with this - I don't know why people think the staff is down on Massie. Making mental mistakes was a good reason to bring in Winston, but it doesn't mean he won't be looked at as a starting RT next year.

I believe that if we look back on this thread and others we'll find that you're making Sowell the presumptive starter at RT for 2014 as much as you're naming Earl Watford the presumptive starter at RG for 2014. I'm fine discussing the possibility, but let's look at the evidence and discuss that before we make the assumption that this is going to happen.

If you've looked at the facts from last season and realized that Sowell didn't contribute as much to the Colts as you had presumed he did, just say that. Don't get all defensive that you just meant that because he had a few dozen snaps scattered over 16 weeks, that he can be a contributing starter at RT for the 2014 Arizona Cardinals, or that so doing would be a good thing.
I think you're making alot of presumptions about what I'm presuming. At no time did I state that I wanted Sowell to be the starting RT or that I thought he would. I only said that it wouldn't surprise me if he was and that he will likely be in the mix.

As for Watford, in another thread, I mentioned how it's hard to count on him being a starter because he has yet to play any signifcant time in the NFL. I've said I like his athlecisim and potential but that doesn't mean anything. In fact, I said I'd be in favor of Colledge being the starting RG, as was the plan fo this year, if he was willing to take a big pay cut.

My ideal starting OL next year would be:
Monroe/Albert, Cooper, Sendlein, Colledge, Winston although I am starting to warm to the idea of Lewan at 20 and playing him at RT. But taht depends on who the options available are at that point.

Technically Arians is telling the truth. Right now they don't have what he considers a starting RT on the roster for next year. However, I think he's touting Sowell a bit in the article and Sowell will be the RT next year.

You said that three days ago.

I didn't know I was Bruce Arians. Try to find where I said I wanted Sowell to be the RT and get back to me.

I stated that I think Arians is touting him to be the RT next year. That's a possibility. I guess I should have said could be instead of will be but that's what I was implying and I figured in my subsequent posts that where I said it's not out of the realm of possibility that Sowell could be the RT next would make that clear. And my main response was to your assumption earlier in the thread.

I copied this from your response earlier in the thread:

I think predictions of Sowell moving to right tackle misunderstand what this offensive system looks for in a tackle.

I don't know you can say that, and it's completely offbase, considering Sowell was in Arians system in Indy, then they brought him to Arizona and he started in his system this year.

And you said that you think that Sowell will be the right tackle next year, but, you know, whatever. Don't stand fast on your position in face of the evidence of what you actually said.

It's not completely off-base. For several reasons.

1) Sowell clearly wasn't what Arians "wanted" or else he would've started more than a handful of snaps over the course of the 16 game season.

2) Sowell started in Arizona not because he was the preferred option, or he would've been starting in Week 1. Instead, Sowell became the starter by default when Keim traded Levi Brown for magic beans after a few games.

3) An understanding of the concepts of the Power-O rushing offense would lead you to believe that the preference is for a bigger tackle on both sides of the line, so that he can set the edge in the running game and allow the pulling guard to come in behind him. Arians referenced Sowell spending time in the strength and conditioning program and getting bigger and stronger.

4) The results of rushing behind Sowell were staggeringly poor. 28th in the NFL both between the guards and off left tackle. When we were able to move Sowell outside left end (like we'd do with a guard), we were actually top 5 in the league.

Or maybe it was because he was a youngster signed off the TB pratice squad. Still, signing him off another team's PS is a clear sign that he's not what they are looking for in a T.

Again, unless Sowell was the only LT on the planet available, he was brought to AZ as a guy with something the coaching staff saw as a fit for their system. If not why not just go with Potter?

Isn't that the goal for every player on the roster? I gues they're not system fits either.

I still don't know what you're trying to argue about. Sowell is on the team for a reason, I never said he was a great player, and it's very possible he's the starting RT next year. Feel free to contadict that, or argue about it, until you're blue in the face because you're wrong on all 3 accounts.

Personally, I do not care what he did with the Colts at RT and it does not matter because of one fact... he basically started the whole year at LT this season which is a more difficult skill set. Removed from a strength factor because most teams run to the right, if he can play LT, he could easily play RT. I personally hope we upgrade the LT position before the draft

This thread deviated quite a bit from the initial topic.

I think we should look to renegotiate Colledge's contract first. If he would take an across the board paycut down to about 3 million per season, then I think he can be kept. Outside of that scenario, let him walk, he is not likely to even find that much elsewhere.

Yes to all of this.
