And you said that you think that Sowell will be the right tackle next year, but, you know, whatever. Don't stand fast on your position in face of the evidence of what you actually said.
It's not completely off-base. For several reasons.
1) Sowell clearly wasn't what Arians "wanted" or else he would've started more than a handful of snaps over the course of the 16 game season.
Or maybe it was because he was a youngster signed off the TB pratice squad. Still, signing him off another team's PS is a clear sign that he's not what they are looking for in a T.
2) Sowell started in Arizona not because he was the preferred option, or he would've been starting in Week 1. Instead, Sowell became the starter by default when Keim traded Levi Brown for magic beans after a few games.
Again, unless Sowell was the only LT on the planet available, he was brought to AZ as a guy with something the coaching staff saw as a fit for their system. If not why not just go with Potter?
3) An understanding of the concepts of the Power-O rushing offense would lead you to believe that the preference is for a bigger tackle on both sides of the line, so that he can set the edge in the running game and allow the pulling guard to come in behind him. Arians referenced Sowell spending time in the strength and conditioning program and getting bigger and stronger.
Isn't that the goal for every player on the roster? I gues they're not system fits either.
4) The results of rushing behind Sowell were staggeringly poor. 28th in the NFL both between the guards and off left tackle. When we were able to move Sowell outside left end (like we'd do with a guard), we were actually top 5 in the league.
