On the BS report (with Bill Simmons) recently they were talking about how the D'backs should try to acquire BJ Upton, what would people think of that? We haven't heard anything about the D'backs considering it, so I'm sure its unlikely.

I think he's just as good as CY in the field and has a higher upside at the plate. He's shown All Star level flashes before, but he's always had consistency and effort issues, more dramatic than Justin's for sure. Perhaps playing with his brother he'd be more motivated and able to stay on task? Though perhaps having them together they'd both slack off, who knows.

It would be a marketing panacea for the Snakes though.

No thank you...

Bump...

This thread seemed to have helped Upton get out of his funk last season.

Since negative statements against Upton and 82's penchant for railroading CY have a paradoxical effect on their performance, gotta stick to what works.

This thread must live on....

Plus he now has a beer gut and looks out of shape. Apparently he has no commitment to his craft and we should run him out of town on a rail!

Well, the light rail goes right by the ball park (and heavy ones behind the stadium...

BUMP.

Am I the only one who thinks Upton is overrated? People talk about him as if he's one of the top 10 hitters in the game. I've never seen it. Sure, he's got a lot of potential. And he's had flashes of being what everyone says he is.

He's had some good seasons. Nothing great. And definitely not worthy of being called elite like so many call him. Right now he's a pretty good player in a TERRIBLE slump.

I'd be half-tempted to see what he could generate via a trade once he starts turning it around and his value goes back up.

He actually has Hall of Fame talent... and the problem is he knows it. He's got a VW Bug engine housed in a Ferrari body.
I'm pretty convinced his performance will never actually match his potential. Yes, he's stll young... he turns only 25 this August. So he certainly has time on his side... which, I think he knows as well and is therefore problematic. There is no urgency with Upton. No sincere "want to". Gotta believe he drives a guy like Gibby crazy... as well as Baylor, Williams and Trammel. All of whom far surpassed their potential.

J-UP is extremely frustrating to cheer for as a fan. Both his crappy, underwhelming performances and his attitude are nails on the chalk-board...

Upton is killing the team right now, and a large reason why we've had such a bad year. Having your 3 hole hitter as arguably your worst performer is a recipe for disaster.

You'd definitely be able to get some talent in an Upton trade. And your OF is still very, very solid with Parra, Young, and Kubel.

Of course he'd probably end up putting it all together after being traded and make the Dbacks look foolish.

I promised myself I wouldn't touch this until June 1. I created this thread on May 28 a year ago and just after that Upton went on a tear that earned him some serious top 5 MVP consideration.

For now I'm just gonna say, I hope he gets it going just like last year.

Over a season you're generally going to get B or B+ performance from a guy that has A+ talent. That's what's frustrating. All of you are getting riled up over a drought that will probably be fixed by raining home runs in mid-June. It's just the way Upton has gone since he got up here.

If Justin never becomes an A+ performer, I think I've resolved I'm OK with that as long as he continues to put up his year-to-year numbers and he never demands A+ money. What I'd like to see is Chris Young become a real running mate in that lineup -- and the D-Backs go find a legitimate lead-off hitter who can set the table for them.

I have no doubt that his hitting will improve, it is his fielding that bothers me most.

Probably so, although he's at a solid F right now. I know last year he went on a tear after the Houston series, but he better start picking it up. Our season depends on it.

Well. 3 walks and a game winning 2 run homerun.

Since I bumped this thread, can I take credit if he goes on a tear? :)

Ian Kennedy should be added to this list.

Eh, Ian is probably performing to ability at this point, as a middle of the rotation pitcher.

Justin is a totally different story, such wasted talent. Watch us trade him in the offseason, and him going somewhere else and killing it.

It'd be stupid to trade him, he always bounces back after thee types of years historically.

IPK has seen his WHIP baloon up to 1.33 this season. That's #5 pitcher numbers right there on a good team.

Yeah, I'd like to think the truth on Kennedy is somewhere in the middle of the last 2 years. Maybe this is the real Ian.

A fan from Gilbert wrote a Letter to the Editor (AzRepublic: Your Turn - 9/9/12) about Justin Upton. I wonder what the D'backs and JUp would think about it?

Some players are just not suited to stand around all game in the outfield. It gives them too much time to think. Playing the infield might just cure that. If Upton is going to be productive here, that might be the answer.

John W. Burke said:
In recent editions you've talked about how the Diamondbacks need a shortstop, and Kevin Towers said, "We need a shortstop and it's going to be expensive to get one."

When we drafter Stephen Drew in 2004 as our shortstop of the the future, the next year we drafted another shortstop with the No. 1 pick. Since we had Drew, Justin Upton was moved to right field.

Now I'm not the biggest Upton fan, but he has never looked comfortable. Give him a chance at his natural position and see what he does. The numbers he puts up aren't too bad for an outfielder but would be great for a shortstop.

Give him winter ball and spring training to get reacclimated to the position, we can always trade him if it doesn't work out.

What do you guys think about the idea? But, as I've posted, I also think that he and his buddy Chris Young need to be separated (trade Young or give him away) for Upton to move forward in Phoenix.

'Sorry, but I couldn't find the link on AzCentral.com. The Your Turn column is such a small item.
