They are a plenty.

B.J. Upton has officially declined the Rays' qualifying offer, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter). The centerfielder was widely expected to turn down the one-year, $13.3MM offer, putting the Rays in position to pick up a compensatory draft pick.

Now that Upton is officially off the books, the Rays may now use the new found freedom to pursue B.J.'s younger brother, Justin Upton. Tampa Bay is obviously working with a pitching surplus and could use James Shields, David Price, or Jeremy Hellickson to get such a deal done.

Though the Diamondbacks are said to be looking for a third baseman, shortstop or starter in a Justin Upton trade and the Red Sox have several young players at those positions, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe doesn't think the Red Sox would part with any of their young core at this time.

The Rangers aren't willing to include either Elvis Andrus or Jurickson Profar in a deal for Upton, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (Twitter link), which will likely end trade talks between Texas and Arizona.

The Tigers are doing background work on Upton, tweets Nick Piecoro, though the Tigers may not have yet "talked specifics" with the D'Backs.

If we can grab a #1 pitcher, or a legit thirdbasemen or shortstop, I can only say  Upton...

AZ620 said that Hellickson is likely the guy that we are targeting in a deal with the Rays. I certainly don't think the Rays would part with Price. 620 also said that Bauer may be on the move to fill other holes.

Ooof, great use of top picks Dbacks. (depending on the return for these guys) Talk about buying high and selling low.

That's a bit premature to say as we haven't overpaid Upton since he's been with us, and we don't know yet what we'll get in return if we do actually trade him...

Our rotations is full of Hellickson's. We need an Ace.

That is why I said depending on what they get back. I am really just predicting that they won't get back value equal to the potential we were led to believe these two had.

Upton and Bauer. :)

I knew I should have been concerned when they put up signs for "Uptown" in right field.

Uptown is one of the worse areas on the north side of Chicago: chock full of mental defectives and halfway houses.

Ah... Bauer is a loon. Amazing talent, but he's scrambled eggs betweent he ears and a dysfunctional presence in the clubhouse.

I have little doubt that if Upton is actually traded, he'll go on to become the next Pujols... :bang:

I have a lot of doubt. Did Pujols continually throw the ball over the head of the man he was supposed to get it to in order to show off his arm? Or miss popups by sliding, rather than running, to it when the stands were nowhere nearby? Or throw temper tantrums in the dugout for no reason other than his own disappointing performance with runners on base?

I really don't think that Justin will ever put it all together and come near the dominating superstar status that Albert put himself in for years. Or even a consistent producer. Probably more like his underachieving brother, B.J.

His body language indicates he's frustrated here. They should accommodate him. Especially if there's a #1 starter to be had. Throw in a solid AA or almost ready infield prospect and we're there.

I guess Detriot is off the list since they just signed Tori Hunter.

The Rangers are also interested in corner outfielders Nick Swisher and Justin Upton. Manager Ron Washington could move Nelson Cruz to DH and make Michael Young a utility player if Daniels acquires a right fielder such as Swisher or Upton. The Rangers attempted to acquire Andrelton Simmons from the Braves for Mike Olt in order to flip Simmons to Arizona in a deal for Upton. However, it doesn't appear that the Rangers will trade Elvis Andrus or Jurickson Profar to acquire the Arizona right fielder.

Have not heard too much about Andrelton Simmons, but he appears to be a high ranking SS in the Braves system and had a decent showing in 40 games last season.

I feel that ARZ should have made an offer for Jose Reyes. He is one of the best SS in baseball and looking at teams reluctance to trade their young SS prospects he was probably the best option. ARZ from what I read was the intial trade partner for the Marlins but Towers never made a serious offer so MIA made the deal with TOR. With the health issues of Josh Johnson and the money owed Buerhle I can see why ARZ balked even though they would have really solidified ARZ's rotation. But ARZ should have been all over Reyes because they wouldn't have had to trade Upton to get the SS they want.

Looks like they did.

The Marlins talked to the Diamondbacks about Jose Reyes before eventually including Reyes in the Toronto deal, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. The D'Backs are known to be looking for help at third base and shortstop, despite acquiring Cliff Pennington earlier this month. We heard yesterday that Miami had also discussed Reyes with the Red Sox prior to the big trade.

I've read that TEX is waiting for ARZ to drop their demand for either Profar or Andrus in a potential trade but who else do they have to offer, Olt? ARZ has no interest in him which is surprising but ARZ should take Upton off the market if they aren't going to get what they want for him. Tell TEX to go pound sand.

If nothing happens at the winter meetings next week I agree.

Kendrick said that but Towers is still listening to offers and if the right one comes along he's gone.

I've heard some interestin rumors that ATL may be interested in uniting him with his brother they just sined. They do have the SS ARZ would want but the rumor mentioned pitching prospects which ATL has as well but there are concerns with their pitching prospects health, particularly uber-prospect Julio Teheran and potential arm troubles that caused his velocity to really drop this year. ATL is most likely not going to deal Simmons whom TEX tried to trade for to flip to ARZ but ATL said no to Olt.

Reports are Upton for Cliff Lee, potentially.

With scrubs like Victorino and Pagan getting 10+ per year, Upton's value should be off the charts.

Getting rid of him for any reason at this point would be incredibly stupid, even if we get a king's ransom.
