http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Extras/2008/wwhi040808.htm

Two first-round, early-entry juniors — Kansas CB Aqib Talib and Michigan WR Mario Manningham — have been removed from the draft boards of multiple NFL teams because of character concerns.

Specifically, Talib admitted at the Combine to testing positive for marijuana three times while at the University of Kansas, according to several league sources. While teams appreciated Talib’s honesty, it bothered one team that Talib dismissed the first positive test because he said he had told Kansas head coach Mark Mangino that he was going to test positive.
Manningham, unlike Talib, denied testing positive at any time throughout college when the question was posed at the Combine about his past marijuana use. He also worked out poorly at the Combine after having waited to sign an agent and showing up unprepared to the annual event

Good now there will be no way he gets taken at 16 and we don't have to worry about the huge bust he is likely going to be.

a bit of an overstatement...it's not like he was doing lines of coke or meth.

it does show a poor understanding in judgement (spelling), which is a concern.

I wouldn't take guys with any off the field problems in the first round. My first round picks have to be SOLID CHOICES, NO GUESSWORK, NO SECOND THOUGHTS....talent alone wouldn't work.

He'd be off my 1st round board.

You can not risk 1st round money on a guy that is likely to be suspended for 8 games or more before his first contract is up. Remember my friends on this board, he took the test and failed it over and over again. He doesn't think what he does off the field matters. He's gotten away with it....is now thinking about being a 1st round selection and he'll get away with it again. Ignorance breeds ignorance.

Fool me once shame on you
Fool me twice shame on me

He failed 3 times - now you're just stupid

How many times did Warren Sapp test positive for pot before his draft? Some people do learn from their mistakes.

Problem is now there is less of a chance that he goes before our pick, bumping others down to us. Oy. I hope that there is a run on the OLinemen before we pick. We also really need to seriously consider Cason. Say what you will about his 40 speed, he'll be able to stay with his guy because he has the ability to turn with the receiver. Those fast 40 guys can't do squat when they are facing the wrong direction.

He'd be off my board too. This sucks for the Cards. One more player is less likely to fall to the Cards now, as he had been considered a top 20 pick.

I don't have a problem with people if they want to smoke pot. Never been my cup of tea, but I don't see it as being that bad.

I do however, think it's reason to pass on a potential draft pick. It's one thing for regular people, but the NFL has a substance abuse policy and if Ricky Williams taught us nothing else, it's that the policy is enforced. The guy is no good to anyone if he's suspended all the time for drugs.

I would pass on him, no doubt.

It's not about whether you think that it should be banned or not. It is.

I'd prefer that we don't take Cason at #16 overall. I'd much rather trade down.

Hopefully there's a run on OL and RBs in the top 15 picks. If none of the wide recievers or a guy like Keith Rivers is still hanging out there at #16 overall, I think we could get a trade package together to move down.

A mini-run on DL would be nice, as well. There's a high liklihood that Chris Long, Sedrick Ellis, Glenn Dorsey, and Vernon Gholston are all gone before pick #10 rolls around. But if a team takes Harvey or Merling above the Cards, it could cause teams to move up to get the next guy.

I don't think Talib will fall as far as people think.... Certainly not to the 2nd round....

I honestly think a team late in the first round will take him... maybe a Washington, or New York... but I agree with many above, hopefully he won't be a Cardinal.....

Didn't Fred Smoot fall from being a sure fire first rounder to the second round for similar concerns? Or am I off on that one?

1 mistake is forgivable but obviously the guy needs to grow up, gets some self discipline and will power. I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

I think Smoot fell cause he only did 1 rep on the bench at the combine. May have pot issues as well, but the bench stood out to me.

Talib fess'd up to it at the combine, I don't see how this drops him down at all. He'll still go in the top 20. Talent wins out over pot, it was POT!!!!!!!!! He didn't go drinking and driving and kill someone, he didn't do coke and have sex with minors, he smoked pot people...

Give the kid a break, he's been a playmaker at Kansas. Not everyone who has smoked pot is as stupid as Ricky Williams, JMO.

If I was a GM I wouldn't have any doubts about this kids ability to transition into the NFL as a starting CB. Yup we need one pretty badly. Eric Green isn't a starting caliber CB, he's a Nickelback(pun!) not sure if I spelled that bands name right :)

Doesnt matter if he fessed up or not, three fails is three fails and it will take him fewer than three to be suspended by the NFL.

What 3X shows you is he has a severe lack of judgement.

He didn't just fail 1 test, he failed three, thats the issue, not the narcotic consumed--he continued taking a banned substance. He didn't learn his lesson the first time, that alone is a serious character issue, he isn't dedicated/self disciplined/smart enough to stop when he knows it could possibly cost him millions of dollars.

I would be shocked if he's even on the Cardinals board at this point.

If he was a top 10 talent I dont think this would effect his draft stock. Clavin Johnson, Omobi Akoye, and Gaines Adams all admited to using pot in College and all were still drafted in the top 10. But in Talibs case where he is not a top 10 talent and is surrounded by a plethora of other players at CB and othr positions that are just as good as him or even slightly less talented he could be in for a bit of a fall.

He only goes into the NFL substance abuse program if he fails his Combine test. If he passes the Combine test, then it's likely he learned his lesson. Who's to say if he failed three times during his junior year or twice as a freshman and once again as a sophomore?

The only reason this story came up is because some team's scouting department/GM wasn't sure if Talib would fall to them and hopes that some team goes ahead and take him off their board.
