He only goes into the NFL substance abuse program if he fails his Combine test. If he passes the Combine test, then it's likely he learned his lesson. Who's to say if he failed three times during his junior year or twice as a freshman and once again as a sophomore?

The only reason this story came up is because some team's scouting department/GM wasn't sure if Talib would fall to them and hopes that some team goes ahead and take him off their board.

What does it matter when he failed? He is a repeat offender. I wouldn't take a chance on him turning in to a NFL suspension risk every season because he likes to "relax" during his offseason. Until the NFL removes Marijuana from the list of banned substances or the US Gov't removes it from the list of illegal narcotics he is a risk.

He won't be a Cardinal, I know this organization enough to know that so it really doesn't bother me that much..I just can't believe anyone makes excuses for him like "it was only pot" or "he admitted to it"--you think had he not admitted to it the NFL would not have found out?? I'm sure his agent told him to admit to it and he didn't do it because he particularly wanted to.

Teams may have learned a lesson from Castillo (is that the right name?), a 1st round talent that the Chargers drafted early 2nd, IIRC. Different situation--his was one failed steroids test--but same lesson. Sometimes these kids do stupid stuff, and a lot of time they won't do it again. When a guy is forthright and honest about it, it should make you take pause to evaluate him. You might still think he's full of it, in which case you still pass on him. Still, maybe you should just take him anyway. The Steelers learned that lesson the hard way in the early '80s, passing on a young man similar to Talib. Fortunately for the Dolphins, Marino put his drug problems behind him quite well.

Castillo took the juice to come back from an injury during the postseason, though.

I think it's much closer to what happened with three top picks from the draft last year admitting to smoking. No one wanted away from those guys.

Kiper's on ESPN right now saying that Talib is the best CB in this class and should be a Top 10 pick. I'm not sure of that's the case (it would depend on the system).

When you know you're going to be tested and get busted 3 times, you're stupid.

He WILL get caught in the NFL. He doesn't get it. He's been a pampered player. You think giving him 15 million in guarantee's and he'll somehow learn? No way! He just learned that the behavior he did got him this much cash...

He may end up being a stud, but he just as well has a good chance of being in the NFL drug rehab system and sitting on the bench for 4 games this year or next.

1st round picks are NOT FOR GAMBLING. You take talent who can think on and off the field. There is NO WAY he'd be in my 1st or early 2nd round picks.

Mid second if someone on my coaching staff I trusted said they would work with him and I believed the coach.

Kiper's his PR man. He's doing damage control.

My point is this is OLD news, where have you guys been? This was known back in January, and last year from what I've read. How can this just come up now if not for a "certain team(s)" wants him to drop to them. This is draft warefare 101, if you had him on your board last week or last month how do you take him off your board now? Every team had him either on their board or off, at seasons end, I'm guess he's still on 90% of teams draft boards, this whole "He smoked pot 3 times, oh no!" is a bunch of media and PC bs, trying to get him to slide.

Yeah he's shown poor judgement but he's a young man, learning to grow up. I won't penalize him anymore for it today than I would've last week. I don't think it helps his case at all, some GMs will shy away, but to say he's now a second round pick, that's pretty silly IMHO. He still goes top 10-20 this has little effect on his $$$$$ as most of the posters on this board think.

a bit of an overstatement...it's not like he was doing lines of coke or meth.

it does show a poor understanding in judgement (spelling), which is a concern.

I wouldn't take guys with any off the field problems in the first round. My first round picks have to be SOLID CHOICES, NO GUESSWORK, NO SECOND THOUGHTS....talent alone wouldn't work.

He'd be off my 1st round board.

You can not risk 1st round money on a guy that is likely to be suspended for 8 games or more before his first contract is up. Remember my friends on this board, he took the test and failed it over and over again. He doesn't think what he does off the field matters. He's gotten away with it....is now thinking about being a 1st round selection and he'll get away with it again. Ignorance breeds ignorance.

Fool me once shame on you
Fool me twice shame on me

He failed 3 times - now you're just stupid

I have 2 words for you Randy Moss. How many teams wish they hadn't passed on him? There are several players who were though to be drug users that haven't ever tested positive in the NFL, and there are just as many who never tested positive in college that are now suspended.

Moss failed 1 drug test as a college freshmen ONE, thats why he left FSU for Marshall. One does not equal 3

I don't think the Cards will look at him. They've really had a pretty good record when it comes to character and off field issues. I'm sure that's not by accident. They have to factor that in when scouting players. I think "No play" Ray was the last guy they've had that had any off field issues.

I though it was twice. He also had a couple of arrests on his record. The point I am making is that people mature and they change.
He wasn't talking about Brent(i think that was his first name) Moss ,the RB from Wisconsin :D.

The front office has very little to NO tolerance for guys coming out with any issues...yeah once in a blue moon they get stuck, but that is why there is no way they would take a chance...that is just the way it is. And I respect their position.

I have two for you Pac Man and Chris Henry

Come off the pipe!! He's over 18 years old and KNEW he was going to be tested, he failed, knew he was going to be tested and failed then did it one more time.

If the stove is on and you tell a 18 year old not to touch it and he does...you say, "what's wrong with you", then he does it again, "are you freaking stupid" then a third time "You are stupid!" - this guy failed the test 3 times

No freaking way I touch him until the mid 3rd.

The kid is an idiot!!!

I'll bet you within his first 2 years he gets arrested for something and is suspended for 4 games. He may make it through his first year untouched, but tigers don't change their stripes. 2nd year he will be busted.

regarding the ones that have been busted that weren't caught - who do you think is a better bet....guy who's never been in trouble with the cops or one where the cops know him by first name....don't be a fool...then again it's your choice.

Dude no need for insults, what are you 18? Oh I guess your just a smart a$$ or a keyboard tough guy. Because you said a tiger doesn't change their stripes.

I was a drug councelor for a few years and I hung out with a pretty rowdy group of bikers (iam sure you can figure out who). So I have seen people change and grow up and become outstanding citizens. So to say that a Tiger doesn't change their stripes may be true, but people aren't tigers their human and it's human to err. So try and be a little forgiving it will make the world a better place.

Yeah but we can't count on this guy to change, the team can't afford to risk an investment of millions with the hope that he "changes his stripes"...the Cardinals aren't good enough to make those kinds of mistakes. They make enough errors as it is without even knowing a risk going in.

I agree, when I was younger I was a straight up punk. Very angry at the world and tried everything. I grew up and have 5 boys and 2 grandbabies, all very good kids. They have had all kinds of questions about my tatoos and why I'm such a rocker. WhOO!

I was placed on house arrest when I was 18. I picked guitar up and it saved me. Soon I was very good and went to school to study music. Do you have any idea how hard it is to study theory when you cant read music? It took alot of study time and practice. Ya the guitar saved my freedom.

Anyone can change and if you are out there and say you have no faults or are better than others, good luck looking into the mirror and have fun lying to yourself
