guys, any idea if we have any shot at keeping schill past his present contract? would be great if we could keep the duo together. throw in webb and we have a 3-ace party going.

i heard we're making a run at richie sexson. anybody else hear that? i know it sounds odd, what with management doing their best to get rid of fans with their doom and gloom forecasts, but if we can keep schill and add sexson, this is gonna be so great...

jeezes, i sound like a cubs fan...

A few days ago, the D'backs announced that Shea Hillenbrand would play 3B exclusively next season.

My first reaction was -- this is early to be making that kind of announcement. (I was glad to hear that he won't be moved back and forth between 3B and 1B. My next wish is that he be put 3rd in the batting order and left there.)

My second was -- that announcement wouldn't be made for Lyle Overbay. The probability of not re-signing Mondesi, and the possibility of losing Gonzo to surgery, means we need to add a power bat.

And I wouldn't mind seeing the D'backs re-sign Mondesi, but only to a 1-year contract.

FINLEY
CINTRON
HILLENBRAND
GONZO
SEXTON
MONDESI
SPIVEY or COUNSELL
HAMMOCK

is not a bad lineup. A little heavy with RH hitters, but that's OK.

Substitute Danny Bautista for Mondesi, we should be OK. Substitute him for Gonzo and we're out of balance.

The need to substitute for both, and we're in trouble.

Adding a guy like Sexson is a luxury with Gonzo. Without him, it's a necessity.
And would still leave us short one power bat.

With Shea being the third baseman next year I expect the Diamondbacks to trade Chad Tracy.

'Sorry, Smolder. I responded to your second point.

No, you're not the only one who wants to keep Johnson/Schilling (or Schilling/Johnson) intact for a few more years. :)

But, unless we win it all next season, I am afraid that too many circumstances will block the return of Curt beyond that.

Hopefully Schilling, if he really wants to stay, will defer money, MOST LIEKLY HE WONT. Maybe RJ, Most likely not. So I got to say my good byes to Schill   :( :(

From what I understand Schilling is already doing all sorts of interviews in PHI saying he'd love to come back and that he's only in ARI for 1 more season at the most. He won't approve a trade mid-season and he'll only go to PHI this off-season. He wants to be a FA and claims that he would give us a "home town discount" but I get the feeling he's telling PHI the same thing and playing both sides of the fence. Schillingfan could probably give us some more detail to these things.

Curt is back in Philly to work on his annual golf tourney for ALS. He's had it for years. He has been interviewed promoting the tournament and naturally they have asked him about coming back.

He has consistently said that he wants to stay in Arizona. But he also knows that he will not be resigned after next year. In case people haven't noticed the D-Backs are cutting payroll and plan to be down to $55 mil in 2005. No way that includes his salary. He always said he wanted to finish his career in Arizona or Philly. Looks like there is no way that can happen.

He really isn't lobbying in Arizona, that's a lost cause at this point unless their fiscal situation dramatically changes. They have given him no encouragement. Thus he has said he will only accept trade back to Philly next year. He hasn't said he wants that, but why prolong the inevitable when you know you are being forced out?

goodness. what is wrong with management. i mean, our payroll is 55 mil or so right? randy eats up 15? you mean to tell me out of the 40 mil remaining, 10 is too much for 1/2 of what put the dbacks on the map? this is ridiculous. i'd rather watch the dbacks with 3 stellar pitchers and an offense trying to rebound from a bad year, than have 2 stellar pitchers, the aforementioned offense, and 2 clowns we picked up off free agency. this is ridiculous. schill is an ace! argh!

The question is, can the Dbacks effectively put together a team with a $55 million budget...$25 million going to RJ and Schilling...$8 million going to Mantei (right?)?

That would leave a mere $22 million total and Gonzo is sitting there with X dollars. I mean, Schilling would have accept significantly below $10 million to get the Dbacks into the $55 million budget.

For the Dbacks to keep Schilling either they will have to rework their budget or Schilling would have to give a HEFTY home town discount.

Re-work your math... Mantei is only signed through the 2004 season. The $55 million budget is slated for the 2005 season, so Mantei does NOT figure into that budget... He'll either be gone or will have to take a HUGE cut.

You are right. My bad. As I was typing it, something about it didn't seem right and I couldn't put my finger on it. Different calendars has a huge effect
