Similarities:

  • Both are game managers.
  • Both can make good passes when the throws are there.
  • Both can scramble for chunks of yardage.
  • Both take advantage of short fields given by the Defense and ST's.
  • Both have histories of bad play.
  • Neither make big mistakes.
  • Neither are 'elite' or ever will be.

Differences:

  • Kolb doesn't have an elite running back behind him or an elite TE.
  • Smith doesn't have an elite WR to throw to.
  • Kolb has a history of injuries and concussions.
  • Kolb only has 3-4 games where he shows what he can do with this defense.
Agree of disagree? Anything to add or take away? I believe the similarites are clear. KK and AS have the same identity and expectations at the QB position. Discuss.

I think you underrate just how good a QB Smith is.

Kola can be our Dilfer a little better than that even.

I think you're right. However, that doesn't mean Kolb's ceiling isn't at Alex Smith's level. Time will tell, but so far with what we've seen in Kolb this year, I'd say he's headed that way.

For now I'll accept the T. Dilfer comparison :)

Obviously my iPad felt it needed to auto correct Kolb to Kola for some reason

True but it took Alex Smith 6 years and finally getting comfy in a system and a TON more starts than Kolb. Kolb could get there if he keeps this up.

Smith probably would have been at his current level sooner if he didn't have incompetent head coaches. He was overhyped coming out of college but he always had talent.

Really doesn't matter much because I am pleased with Kevin Kolb, his pocket awareness has improved tremendously from last season and he isn't trying to force things. He just needs to keep it up and improve a little more each week.

Without boring anyone with detail, I don't think the 2 are all that similar.

Smith is more athletic and has a bigger vertical arm. Kolb is more accurate on quick short throws.

You guys are overrating Kolb. He lost his job to Vick and look how bad he looked today.:D

Kolb is undefeated and has ZERO picks. Smith can't say either of those this season. Granted, it is FAR too early in the season to make any wild claims. But the guy has impressed me this year. Something he failed to do after week 1 last year

So I think its safe to say that on the QB-o-Meter, Kolb has gone past Trent Dilfer but has a ways to go to prove he's as good as Alex Smith

QB-O-Meter: (scale of 1 to 8)

Max Hall-Chad Henne-M. Lienart-Trent Dilfer-Alex Smith-P. Rivers-E. Manning-T. Brady

and Kolb is about a 4.5

how is Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers not on there? Either could make an argument for superiority. Ever

Its just a scale on the "established QB" scale.

Payton Manning would be in the Eli manning-Tom Bradyish range right now, and Aaron Rodgers probably the same.

Its just a scale to judge against other QB's, I'm not going to list everybody.

I got you, I just think both of them have career QB ratings above Brady. With Rodgers having the highest in NFL history if I'm not mistaken

Kolb isn't great, but Alex Smith is nothing but hot garbage. I see he reverted to his norm of something like 40 attempts for about 165 yards. The bottom line is he can't win a game for you. Kolb possibly could. Smith is good if they have a lead and the defense limits the other team, but what NFL QB isn't. The next time Alex Smith wins a game for the niners will be the first.

If Kolb can keep getting decent protection from the O-line, then the 'sky' is the limit. Well, in any case, he can only do good for this team with protection.

That playoff win by the 9ers over the Saints was very impressive. Just when you thought the Saints had it won Smith took the 9ers down the field. Twice. In the remaining minutes of the 4th quarter. Smith is not Manning, Brees or Brady, but that was a very impressive game by him.

My take on the 2 is that Smith is much more gifted athletically, but I would say that Kolb might have a bigger arm. Smith may be more accurate on deep throws, but I would say that Kolb is more accurate on medium to short throws. Ultimately it is very hard to judge the difference because the 9ers have a good Oline and he usually has a lot of time to survey the field.

The difference between Kolb and Smith is that Kolb is making like $5 million more per year. In a time when the cap is going to be relatively flat for the next two or three years, that's a big deal. That's 2 free agents.

That could be a good thing, especially if the 2 free agents are of the Stewart Bradley variety. But really, Kolb's contract hasn't, and likely won't, have any effect on the Cards ability to sign/retain anybody.

He prevented us from closing the deal on Peyton Manning. Even if you don't think that's relevant, his contract remains an albatross that has caused us to make longer-term commitments to guys like Daryn Colledge than we would have otherwise. You can only move salary cap space around the lower-tier QB who's making 8% of your cap for so long.

The ideal situation is that Kolb accepts a salary reduction for 2013 that keeps him on the roster at $4 million in salary plus his pro-rated bonuses. If we can't get Kolb's cap number down in 2013, it'll likely cost us one or two of LSH, Rhodes, and Groves.

uh... I'm pretty sure he won that playoff shootout against New Orleans last season.

seriously, i'm not an Alex Smith fan, but the idea that Kolb is better than him right now is ludicrous.
