Mawae says "finances won't play into the decision"

Kevin Mawae is about to become an unrestricted free agent, and he claims he wants to sign with the team will give him the most fulfilling experience in 2010, not which team will pay him the most money in 2010.

"I have played long enough where finances won't play into the decision," Mawae told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. "It is about whether or not I want to be the guy or if I am going to tutor or mentor or things like that."

The 39-year-old Mawae started all 16 games for the Titans in 2009, and he said he'd love to return to the Titans in 2010. But he also said the Titans have made clear that they're going to start a younger player (either Leroy Harris or Eugene Amano) at center in 2010, and Mawae isn't sure if he wants to come back as a backup.

"I have been forced into the situation that I have to either humble myself to become a backup when I know I am capable of starting, or go on the free agent market and go somewhere else. It is a lot to have to think about,'' Mawae said. "I am keeping a completely open mind. . . . To say I am never going to come back to the Titans as a backup, I think that would be too strong of a statement. And to say I am certainly going to go somewhere else would be too strong a statement as well.''

And so Mawae will shop himself around to see whether any teams offer him a starting job and a chance to get to the Super Bowl, which Mawae says is his last remaining career goal.
I know we have Sendlein at center. And Mawae is 39 years old. But I am not sold on LS at center.

I am thinking that it would be a good idea to bring him in to start over LS for a year so we have a vet to anchor the OL for Leinart (or?). This also gives LS a year to watch and learn from Mawae, gives us good depth. Maybe with him as our anchor we can get our run game going. He is looking for an opportunity to get the Super Bowl and will accept less pay to go to a contender, which we are.

Thoughts on this?

Whiz and co seem very high on Sendlein, I doubt he gets brought in. Lyle started every game and made some big strides, I think he's cemented himself as a starter on the line. And with Leinart a question mark at QB I doubt many potential FA's consider us contenders.

Lyle has been the starter for two seasons now. He doesnt need to sit and learn behind anyone anymore. Either you think he is a starter or not at this point IMO. To answer that question I do think he is a starter. Spend my time and money elsewhere, let Lyle get another year of experiance and give him a long term deal once he becomes a UFA next year.

When Lyle isn't playing hurt.... He seems solid at the center position.

Somers mentioned in a BLOg earlier this offseason that some of the coaching staff think Sendlein is capable of being an All Pro/Pro Bowl type player...we are not going after Mawae

Hell freaking no!!!!

I would say center is the least of concerns on this team, especially with a end of the road guy who wouldn't come cheap.

Absolutely not. Continuity is king on the offensive line.

I am not a Lyle Sendlien fan per se. but I blame his problem on coaching and not so much on him. In my mind, he is absolutely to blame for one of our loses, SF II, and I suspicion maybe a part in several others including the last one. I certainly hope that they get his problem solved when they move Leinart under center because I don't think he is a very good shotgun center at this point.

I bet we see 50% less of the shotgun. Leinart likes being under center more than in the shotgun & he said that in his latest interview.
