DT/DE:

Locks: Rucker, Peters, Mauro, Nkemdiche, Gunter, Pierre

* This unit has been underwhelming in the pre-season thus far save some superb flashes from Robert Nkemdiche (now injured with a calf strain).
* Xavier Williams would appear to be roster bound, but Steve Keim may need to make a move to add another player to this unit and if so, Williams might be the one to go.
* Ed Stinson remains injured and he was on the outside looking in to begin with. The question is whether the Cardinals will reach an injury settlement with him or put him on IR (which seems unlikely given that they already would like to get T.J. Logan back from the IR in 8-9 weeks).
* The Cardinals cannot afford to keep more than 7 on this unit as last year their STs suffered because of the decision to keep 9 (3 deep at each 3 spots).
* Newly added Peli Anau has shown a very good motor and some splash penetration plays.

OLB:

Locks: M. Golden, C. Jones, K. Martin

* Martin has been making a very good case to be the rotation DE, a la Alex Okafor last year.
* Jarvis Jones, who was signed to assume Okafor's role, is still out with a disc problem. What will they do with Jones? Will they keep him on the 53 until he is healthy? Will they place him on IR? Will they reach an injury settlement and release him?
* Cap Capi and Alex Bazzie have been making some noise. Capi is the stronger of the two, Bazzie is the faster. Both are PS eligible.
* Will Steve Keim add to the position through waiver claims or a trade?

ILB:

Locks: Bucannon, Dansby, Reddick

* Bucannon is off the PUP list, but will he be ready to go versus the Lions?
* Dansby has missed most of training camp. Will he be healthy and in good game shape come week 1?
* Reddick is struggling and looks a little overwhelmed, understandably for a player transitioning to the NFL at a new position.
* Scooby Wright is one of the best STs players. As a fill-in for Dansby, he's made some tackles but has been exposed for his lack of LB speed.
* Xaviar Gooden is much like Wright. Physical but on the slow side, especially in coverage.
* Josh Bynes had the best game of any ILB versus the Raiders and now he is working his way back from injury.
* Philip Wheeler is a seasoned vet working his way back from injury, and making some good plays in practice (interception).
* Tre'Von Johnson looks like a strong possibility for the PS.

CB:

Locks: Peterson, Bethel, B. Williams

* One of the brightest developments in this year's camp has been the improved CB play of Bethel and Williams. BA&SK have gambled that this would be the case, and so far, so good.
* Tramon Williams has been solid in the games and looks like the likely #4 CB, although he was out of yesterday's practice. Not sure why.
* Beyond Tramon Williams, the Cardinals could elect to keep combo CB/Ss Harlan Miller and Rudy Ford. Other than that, there are no other viable candidates to make the 53 man roster.
* Will Keim stick with Tramon Williams or Harlan Miller or Rudy Ford? Or will he be very active during the waiver claims and trading flurry?

S:

Locks: Mathieu, Bethea, Branch, Baker

* All 4 of the sure-bet safeties are interchangeable, just the way the Cardinals prefer.
* Harlan Miller continues to make strides as a safety.
* Rudy Ford showed the kind of speed and range the coaches want.
* Will they keep Miller or Ford or both? Seeing as Mathieu, Branch and Baker can all play slot CB, a case can be made for keeping 9 DBs, with Miller and Ford included.

STs:

Locks: Brewer (LS), Dawson (PK)

* BA said that neither punter (Wile or Leone) has separated himself as yet. Both have shown strong legs and inconsistencies.
* BA also said that Phil Dawson "has his preference" for his holder, but that Dawson said he could make it work with either one. This being the case, the punting job may very likely come down to which player is Dawson's preferred holder. Judging from the last couple of pre-season games, the preferred holder appears to be Richie Leone.

Who are your top 25 on defense and top 3 on STs?

Pierre has been good in the preaseason, really not sure what you've been watching, but we already talked about that.

Think they keep both Rudy & Harlan. Rudy looked very good his first game & Harlan has been improving every game, plus, he has good ball skills. Rudy could also be a returner due to returning in college while also playing RB sometimes.

Jarvis shouldn't make this team. He's been a big bust in his career while also missing most of camp. He provides nothing, but a waste of a roster spot. I'd keep Capi over Bazzie due to being younger & also sticking out just a tad bit more.

Think Xavier stays if we're going to roll with 2 NTs instead of 1.

Good write up Mitch. I disagree about the dline play and doubt SK brings in another one unless Xavier isn't doing well in TC. I agree Stinson looks to be the odd man out.

BASK must truly be disappointed in their decision to sign Jarvis Jones, hind sight being 20/20.

I think Rudy makes it over Harlan if it comes down to the two of them because of the speed factor.

Like I said, i went back and watched very one of Pierre's snaps versus the Bears and he flashed on 2 plays (one of which he got flagged for a facemark and the other was the stunt penetration which you highlighted)), that's it. 0 tackles, 0 sack and 0 QB hits the last two weeks. Does he have potential? Yes. So does Rodney Gunter...but like Bill Parcells always said about potential..."it means you haven't done anything yet."

I agree that keeping 9 DBs with Miller and Ford as 2 of them is very much a possibility. It would mean waiving Tramon Williams.

I agree with you on Capi, if Steve Keim doesn't pick up an OLB off waivers. Bazzie to PS.

On the Cardinals' depth chart they don't list Xavier Williams as a NT...he's been playing DE. They list Rodney Gunter as the #2 NT, although Williams can play NT, no question about that.

I don't think either Miller or Ford would be claimed off waivers, so they have some PS wiggle room there if they want it. I agree with you about Ford's speed.

I am the only one concerned about this defensive line?

Bettcher will have to revise his scheme some because CC could not only occupy two Olineman but beat the double team at times as well. Diche has some of that ability but still needs a lot more seasoning and the rest of the dline appear to be mostly one gappers. I do expect a learning curve and to give up more in the run game initially but as the season progresses I think they will get it figured out. HB being back to HB and if Los remains healthy will help with the run defense as well.

So to answer you question, you are far more worried about the dline than I am. Maybe Sissy needs to put up a poll. :)

Gunther didn't play in the Bears' game, and supposedly wasn't injured. Someone to keep an eye on, this week.

I don't see them keeping both Harlan Miller and Rudy Ford. I think they keep Ford because he has speed, and Miller just doesn't.

I see them keeping Bynes at MLB, and maybe scooby - but I hope not, I thought he looked especially bad against the Bears - he is too slow for special teams also.

At DL Rucker, Peters, Mauro, Nkemdiche, Gunter, Pierre are the only ones I care about, and that is probably all we have to carry, but there will probably be a 7th - most likely Williams, but he has looked bad to me this preseason. I think Pierre, Rucker and Nkemdiche have looked by far the best so far. Overall we are quite weak at the position unfortunately.

At OLB, they should dump Jarvis Jones. Reddick can be the fourth OLB, or if there is room they can keep Capi or Bazzie over him.

I am still worried about the corners. I know Williams looked good in the last game, but that is the first time ever, and I need more evidence before I become a believer. I also am the type that believes a team should have 5 solid corners always. I still feel like we only have 2 or 3, so I would like to see one picked up.

I am a little disappointed in general with the lack of free agent impact. Right now I don't think any of the rookie free agents will make the team, and the only 2nd tier free agents added this offseason who I think will make it are Bynes, Tramon Williams, and Gabbert. Overall I don't think Keim and staff did very well with that this year.

We have PP, HB, Budda, Bethel, & B.Williams. All I would call solid corners this year.

As I have stated before, losing Campbell was going to impact the Dainese especially since they haven't found a reliable replacement for him. Nkemdiche hasn't shown here can stay on the field yet. The rest are decent at best. Our ILBs are light and if the Dline can't keep the other teams Oline off of them to make plays then teams will be successful running the ball.

Please keep in mind, I do not have a count in my head from the offensive post, thus I do not know if I am over/under 53 here.

DL:
Frostee Rucker
Cory Peters
Josh Mauro
Robert Nkimdiche
Pierre Olsen
Rodney Gunter

OLB*:
Chandler Jones
Marcus Golden
Kareem Martin

ILB*:
Deone Bucanon
Karlos Dansby
Haason Reddick
Josh Bynes

CB:
Patrick Peterson
Justin Bethel
Travon Williams
Brandon Williams

S:
Tyrann Mathieu
Tyvon Branch
Antione Bethea
Budda Baker
Harlan Miller

* I would say there will be another linebacker kept, but I would not be surprised for a linebacker to be taken off waivers. I think Cap Capi, Scooby Wright III, and Phillip Wheeler are all still in the mix.

I would not be surprised if Xiaver Williams is kept on the final 53 as well. Maybe this year Ed Stinson may actually be cut, never seen a guy stay on a roster like Stinson has over the past couple years.

As for special teams its going to be Dawson, Brewer, and one of the two punters that have been basically the same, so whomever out of the punter Dawson likes best holding.

I agree to a point.

Campbell didn't do much to prevent what you describe last year tho. Again, I will always site the Buffalo game from last year. Campbell didn't help keep a lot of offensive linemen from lighting up our linebackers.

I think Karlos Dansby is going to be a key role player for the Cardinals against the run game.
