I dunno about the class as a whole but Gabbert is pretty good, what most people on this board don't understand is how good his arm strength is.

That alone makes him worth the pick with no other red flags on him, but only for the right team that has some time to develop him.

I agree we're not going to take a QB though, there's no way, not with where we are in the coaching staffs tenure.

Whiz's new deal is all of one season old...

while this is true, I think last year was such a disaster of epic proportions that he might feel that if he has another year like that (and he could with a rookie QB and not taking someone who can help right away), that seat he's on could starting burning real quick.

The answer to his immediate problem is a solid veteran QB.

Great production in year one from a first round pick, particularly a junior, is hit and miss. So, I see no issue with investing in the QBOF.

It could just as easily be argued that as both Warner and Leinart were not his selections, he has the right to draft and develop his own QB.

the interesting thing is that with the state of the CBA -- you could have the draft and then free agency.

Thus if they do take Gabbert, any vet qb they talk to this year knows that their grasp on playing time would be tenuous at best -- particularly given Whis' track record.

If we take gabbert, its a huge mistake and waste of a #5 pick. If we pass up AJ Green for Gabbert, we may as well give up forever.

I just want the QB position fixed. Orton for our 3rd (or next years second), and Gabbert in the first, to go with Skelton is a good mix of youth and experience. Fix it, and get it right, and use FA to fill the other holes on the roster.

First of all, the top ten list of prospects will, no doubt, change after the Senior Bowl, again after the Combine and possibly again should someone's Pro Day workout blow the socks off the scouts. (This happens every year). So basing our draft strategy on Kiper or McShay's mocks is just a tad premature.

Second, we already have a physically impressive (though raw) young QB in Skelton. Unless the coaches (a) aren't sure about Skelton's future or (b) feel that Gabbert, Newton or anyone else is a Bradford-caliber franchise QB, we have enough other problems to explore other directions (including trading down so long as we don't pass up a legitimate can't miss blue-chipper like we did Suggs).

In addition to not having an NFL-ready QB, our offensive line - at least parts of it - (in my opinion) is awful. We don't have a legitimate all-purpose NFL-caliber TE. We lack a true difference-maker among our four starting LB;s and - Dan William's potential notwithstanding - we don't exactly dominate anybody inside on defense.

The two possible QB depth chart models most logical for us to follow would be:

1. Veteran - Skelton - Either another vet or another rookie

2. Franchise Rookie - Veteran - Skelton (or Veteran - Franchise Rookie - Skelton)

And of course, my fluttering single-wing heart still holds out hope for a scenario where we sign Vince Young, draft Cam Newton and draft someone like Tyrod Taylor later on in order to be three deep in dual-threat deep backs. (Only problem, however, would be that we'd have to junk our entire offensive system in favor of a zone-read spread system).

Note - Think of the zone-read system as being the same as the wildcat only with a deep back who can pass as well as run. (Of course, one benefit of this would be that - given the trend to the zone-read/spread in high schools and colleges, our new system would be very friendly to rookies to step into).

Me either.

We are talking about a franchise that let Leonard Davis go for nothing and then used the #5 pick to draft Leonard Davis. And only the year before used the #10 pick in the first round on a QB when they already had Kurt Warner and then after St.Kurt retired they let the #10 QBOF go for nothing.

Could anyone jump in here and answer a question for me?

Why are Green and Jones the top WR prospects and Justin Blackmon is regarded as a late first?

I realize that Green and Jones are both prototypical size (6'4"/225lbs, or something like that) and I realize that Blackmon is average size (6'1"/215lbs). However, Green and Jones both just put up pedestrian stats while Blackmon put up video game stats and he follows Dez Bryant out of Ok St U. Why wouldn't we rather get Blackmon to complement Fitz and use him a la Mike Wallace of PIT - who is the same size as Blackmon.

So, what's the deal?

Thanks in advance....

Blackmon is a stud no doubt, but he went back to Ok. St. Not sure why he would be included in the Kiper's latest mock.

With a lot of teams so far under the cap due to the uncertainty of the CBA, there won't exactly be a wide selection of FAs available. We have way too many holes to fill to spend at least 2 of our first 3 picks on one position.

the problem is both peterson and aj green will probably be gone by the time the cardinals pick at 5. at that point, there is no other player worthy of that pick in the positions that the cardinals need the most except qb. with a qb driven league, sometimes its worth taking a risk. i'd rather see them take gabbert at 5 than trade down. now if aj green or peterson is there at 5, by all means take one of them. also keep in mind that there are a lot of teams out there that need a qb, especially the niners who would most likely love to draft gabbert, and they draft a few spots behind us.

Oh. I thought Blackmon was in. I recall seeing a mock probably a month or so ago that had him as the third best WR prospect - which was probably prior to him deciding to go back. So, why in the world would he be rated third?

He's not in Kiper's mock draft. As you indicted, he is not coming out and returning to Ok. State.

Yeah, looked back and saw that he wasn't in there. Originally I just figured he was since it was brought up in a Kiper's mock draft thread. :)

we would be daft to take aj green.

If buffalo takes Gabbert, and cinci takes Green and Denver Peterson as I expect them to, we will have choice of some premier pass rushers on the board to look at. Definitely worthy of the position.
