Mel Kipper's latest big board is below. He has dropped both Newton and Mallet into the second round and moved Gabbert of Missouri into the #7 slot on his board. I have not watched Gabbert but he has the size at 6'5" 240 lb. He has Nick Fairley who was everywhere last night as his #2. He is a DT. The number 1 is a DE DaQuan Bowers from Clemson. You can bet he will not be there when we pick. I could now see us drafting something other than a QB unless Gabbert is the real deal and we like him. We could then take Newton or Mallet in the second round if we are not in love with Gabbert. If Gabbert is the guy Kipper and his staff think is worth a #7 then I would take him if he is there when we select.

It's not looking good up in the top of the draft when it comes to QBs. Is there going to be anyone worth that pick? It's definitely no certainty. But I presume some guy will emerge in the all-star games and the combine, eventually rising up to the top of the draft.

I still think that Gabbert will go in the top 5, if not #1 overall.

Trent Dilfer LOVED Blaine Gabbert. Not as much as Andrew Luck, but loved the kid's stuff.

Gabbert goes anywhere from #3 to the Bills ( known for having a draft board that is a bit different from consensus -- although new GM, so who knows) to #10 -

starting with Buffalo at #3-- you have AZ #5, Clev #6, SF #7, Tenn #8, Wash #10 -- all need a QB. Somebody will pull the trigger on Gabbert in that range -- not to mention Minn #12 and Miami #15.

heck -- Cincy at #4 might be ready to deal to one of those teams who figure they have to get ahead of AZ to get the best QB

This is precisely why I think Newton and Mallet will also go in the 1st round. Too many teams are desperate for a QB and won't want to risk waiting until later in the draft.

Heck, I wouldn't put it past Carolina to still take Gabbert with the #1 pick. No matter how good of a defensive player they might get with it, they're still not going to win many games with Clausen (or Moore) at QB.

I think with the Rivera hiring, Carolina is going D.

wow. reading that Draft Tek that the author of that article touted leaves me really saddened by the prospects of this draft. no good outside LBs to speak of. both cb's gone by our pick. no great offensive tackles. i now have gone from thinking this was a potentially great qb draft to not liking any of the prospects. all that leaves is 4-3 ends and tackles, and a wr. there's not even a no-brainer rb or earl thomas-type. heck i'd take a vernon davis! figures that we'd have a craptastic season in a year in which the draft looks "meh."

So is Somers saying that Newton sprained his moxie?

no one involved with the cardinals or anyone covering them should ever use the word MOXIE ever again. just my two cents.

I know it's not going to happen, but if everything went south with Newton it appears he could be a good RB if he so desired (which he will not).

He's too tall to be a RB, he's like 6'6". It works as a QB but as a RB getting hit a lot more that big he'd get hurt.

I think he could move to TE or something. I think he might be able to play QB in the NFL, just not right away.

I'm also concerned that a kid who apparently got caught cheating multiple times at Florida might not be the smartest kid around, which is pretty important in a QB.

He makes one read now and either threw it or ran, NFL offense are so much more complex you really want to know the kid can handle it mentally.

Gabbert's on the rocket sled up, every year there's one.

It becomes a self fullfilling prophecy to some extent but a lot of different experts who've seen him seem to see somthing similar, a good QB prospect.

I expect it'll get worse after the combine.

He could go much higher than even I think, although a lot has to do with who really needs a QB, he's not the kind you take just because he's there even if you're set at QB, he's not worth that much but he's climbing fast.

One name, Harold Carmichael, if he grows a couple inches he'd be just as tall.

WR, split him out, toss up the ball, watch the 5-10 defender flail, always open, seperation built right in, plus it equals a long career.

Just run him right down the sideline, there's literally nothing the CB can do on a properly thrown ball, dosen't matter if he's fast or not, he's always open.

If he was smart that's what he'd do, we'll see.
