Okay, so I think we’ve established that in the whole we think the Cards should grab KJ. But, the question is, will they…or even, will they have the chance? Right now Johnson is on waivers. I’m not real clear on how the waiver wire works, but I think the worst team gets the first chance at these players. Let’s look at who’s in line for Johnson. Outside of record, these are in no particular order; I’m not certain what the tie breaker is. I didn't include teams with the same record as the Cards that we've lost to head-to-head:

Jacksonville (2-7): maybe they’ll think hard about taking Johnson. They have Smith and…well, nobody else really to speak of, I guess. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Jax snatch him up.

Oakland (2-7): Rice, Brown, Porter. Outside of Porter, who the heck knows who will be lining up in the silver and black as wide outs next year. If it weren’t for all sorts of cap trouble (I think they’re in cap hell, not sure), then I say this is also a team that could use KJ.

San Diego (2-7): They just signed Boston to a huge deal. Parker is playing well. Dwight is dependable. I don’t see Schotty telling the owner they need to spend money on another WR. That said, KJ is a dependable 3rd down type that I think Shotty likes, but I just don’t see it happening.

**Atlanta (2-7): Price has looked very pedestrian. Finneran has promise, but has not been consistent. The TE is the best pass receiving option at the moment. You have an owner that is bending over backwards to please the fans and win games. My guess is this is where KJ ends up.

NY Jets (3-6): Cherbet, the Jets’ 3rd down machine, is injured. KJ, one of the better 3rd down machines is on the waiver wire. Hmmm…

Chicago (3-6): Booker-solid. Terrell-getting better. White—pleasant surprise. Gage-playing well as a rook when he gets his shots. I don’t think KJ ends up here, although I think it would be a good fit for him.

To be honest, as much as I’d like to see Kevin Johnson with a Red Bird on his lid, I don’t think the Cards will even get the opportunity not to bring him in. One of these teams will grab him before we even get the chance.

From what I hear, his cap hit with a bonus due in 2005 will prevent anyone from claiming him off waivers. He'll clear. Now the question is, can we convince him to come to the desert?

I don't think that's actually the case. If a team cuts him before that bonus comes due, whoever picks him up will not owe that chunk of change. At least, that's my understanding of it--when you sign a player off waivers, you pick up thier existing contract.

I could be wrong, but if you pick up an existing contract, unless that money comes due this season yet, it's not gauranteed.

I believe if we want him, we can get him ahead of Detroit on waivers based on head to head loss.

I hear on 1060 that the Cards told the EV Trib that they are NOT interested and that they want to develop thier own young WR's...

Well if we get a shot at him then we better sign him.

Graves said over and over again he was waiting to see who got cut on June 1st, and who got cut for the 45 man roster in order to sign another vet WR.

Well Mr. Graves here he is. Exactly what you were looking for. I personally like Kevin Johnson and have seen him make enough plays while at Cleveland to think his ability to catch the long ball would help our offense emensily.

If it happens, and I hope it does look for Boldin and Shipp to have even better games.

Correct. Here is a quote from Darren Urban:
"The Cardinals do not have any interest in veteran receiver Kevin Johnson, released by Cleveland on Tuesday".

I think we should give him a call. But do you actually think we're going to sign him considering the track record Graves has had with this type of situation all year. I bet anything Rod comes out next week and says that he is happier with our current core of WRs.

Man I hate being right.

Yes, I agree that this is not the best of news!!!!

Another case of Graves/Cardinals head office saying one thing and doing the exact opposite. At the beginning of this season the Cards NEEDED a vet WR and now they don't? What justifies this course of action?

At 3-6 you can say that because the playoffs are almost not attainable. So I guess this season is one long training camp.

But I know next year we will be in the same boat with no #2 WR.

Another Graves lie. We caught you this time buddy.

I'm sorry. I'm not getting how this is "another Graves lie". I agree that this is bad news and the large majority of us on this board do not agree with the Cardinals stance, but how is this in any way reflective of Rod Graves lying??

Jon:

You beat me to it. Got in late, opened the Trib, and there was Urban's column. Unbelievable.

I wonder, how good a free agent WR would it take to get the Cardinals' interest? Here's a young veteran, currently leading his ex-team in receptions for 2003, with a 1,000+ season on his resume, and the Cards' "braintrust" doesn't think he could displace Kasper, Poole or Gilmore in the depth chart, let alone compete with Bryant Johnson for the #2 spot.

The Cards might not have been able to sign Kevin Johnson--Pariah and others have done a thorough job of analyzing his alternative employers--but to dismiss Johnson out-of-hand is simply baffling, IMO.

If my memory serves me (which at times it doesn't) Graves said on a couple of occasions he was waiting to see who gets cut in order to get a vet WR that can help his team.

Kevin Johson has been cut and Grave NOW say he is not going after him.

Johnson could definately help this team since he is a vet, and has experience/success with catching the deep ball.

So would that be doing the opposite of what he said before?

Maybe not. Maybe so.

I just think that if you say your gonna do something then back it up.

BTW - The teams looks fine, and Graves has done some good stuff. Just using his past words to call him out. Yes, a little bit nitpicky but none the less he is going back on what he said.

I think that was uncool of you to say he lied.

Maybe KJ is known as a problem child within NFL circles? Maybe he is a lot like David Boston?

I mean, come on the guy was released outright in the middle of the season. Something is clearly wrong with this picture IMO.

How possible would it be that the organization contacted his agent, the agent said NO WAY IN HELL and then the organization reports it has no interest in him?
