KJ or Marbury?

IMO the only thing Marbury has on KJ at this point is health. And we'll see about that when Marbury is 30 years old. I guess he probably also has a little more range on his shot, but then again KJ didn't take many three-point shots. I'll be surprised if Marbury gets one vote on this one.

Johnson was a much, much better shooter. I'm not going to look it up now, but I believe he shot close to 50% from the field for his career. If defenders played back on him, he could simply pull up and nail the jumper from 16-18 feet, which he did with astonishing regularity. That gives him an edge.

By the way, when the Suns acquired Marbury and everyone went happy-crazy about how he was the second coming of Johnson, I pointed out this difference in shooting accuracy then as well. In fact Nash is a lot more similar to Johnson than Marbury ever was.

KJ was relentless and hated to lose.

Marbury has all the physical tools. But, there's something about him that I just can't put my finger on. Why in the hell does this guy go from team to team, without seeing much improvement on the teams he's with? I'm not sure Marbury even knows the answer to this.

KJ was a winner and his accomplishments are of the Hall Of Fame variety. Marbury isn't half the player KJ was.

Lets also not forget that KJ was only the 3rd player behind Magic and one other player (forgot who), to average 20 points and 10 assists over 3 straight seasons. Marbury has never averaged double digit assists at any point in his career. Also I believe that KJ made the playoffs (often times going deep) every single year of his career. How many games has Marbury been to the playoffs? One season, two seasons? And I don't believe that I've ever seen a point guard since KJ drive to the basket against big men the way KJ did. The guy was knocked to the floor after every play, which is why he was injury prone. But that fearlessness and aggresiveness was also what made him great.

The Big "O", Oscar Robertson was the third. I remember Magic in an interview saying KJ was the player he least liked to go up against. Magic could not guard KJ, and he was a better defender than people remember.

I loved Walter Davis, Westphal and Barkley. But, IMO, KJ was the most undefendable player the Suns have ever had. When KJ had his A+ game, he would've lit Marbury up.

Dude... KJ was a prefect PG.

Deadly mid range jumper, and could drive the the hoop + the foul on anyone... He wasnt a bad passer either


If his hammy's were better he would be one of the best every IMO.


Nash is MUCH like KJ only more range & a better passer, less on the "D" end.

To me,

KJ = Hard worker and consistent
KJ = Great, moral person and strong positive influence
KJ = At least as good of a scorer as Marbury, but he usually
focused on getting his teammates involved.
KJ = Careful ballhandler who did not turn the ball over much

Marbury = Very strong and talented player, but just not a great
floor general and does not inspire his teammates. I don't think
he will be remembered nearly as fondly as, or as great of a player
as KJ.

A couple points. KJ was the ONLY player to do the 20-10 thing three years in a row. Magic and Oscar did it more times but never in a row. KJ also missed doing 20-10 by a fraction of a decimal of getting 20 points 1 year and on another year missed it by doing 9.9 assists per game. which would have made it 5 in a row.

Point 2: KJ was a consumate floor general, marbury is not. Marbury, I believe, wants to be a great player and a team player but doesn't know how. KJ knew how to get everyone around him involved in the offense and Marbury doesn't have a clue on how to involve everyone else. If Marbury is hot, his teams usually win that particular game but since he is a very streaky shooter, when he is cold his teams lose games and that usually is a formula for mediocre to bad seasons. I wanted Marbury to succeed badly at Phoenix because he seems like a good guy but I don't think that he will ever "get it" on how to be a true point guard. Marbury and KJ is not even a comparison.

Wow, It looks like we have 3 posters on the board who are from NY. Kj was the best interior passer there was and could also finish strong over or around other centers!

Marbury was awesome and made some plays that made me say...Dizamn, but KJ did it for many years. Going to a couple of all-star games and taking the Suns to the playoffs consistently. I don't blame Marbury because we only traded him to get rid of Penny and Gugliotta's worthless contracts. Marbury was my favorite player and the best player on the team when he was here, but he didn't run the break as good as Nash. He was better defensively than Nash or KJ (shutting down Tony Parker), but he didn't get the team involved enough. I can't knock him because he was a great talent, but just didn't fit for what we were trying to do here.
