Kobe suspended tonight vs. Knicks
ESPN.com news services

Kobe Bryant said Tuesday he was "shocked" to receive a one-game suspension for hitting Manu Ginobili in the face on Sunday.

Bryant said he unintentionally elbowed Ginobili and felt "terrible" about the play. However, Bryant said he can't believe he was suspended.

"I haven't seen a precedence for this. There's unintentional elbows that take place in a game all the time," Bryant told reporters at Madison Square Garden.

Bryant hit Ginobili while trying to defend a shot with 2.7 seconds remaining.

"I'm blown away by it. It makes no sense," Bryant said.

Bryant's suspension also surprised Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

"I have been a little disappointed with how Kobe has been treated as a premier player," Jackson said.

Bryant was not ejected for the incident and finished with 31 points in the 96-94 loss.

With Bryant suspended, the Lakers will open an eight-game road trip without their leading scorer.

Bryant is averaging 28.4 points, 5.5 assists and 5.4 rebounds.

The amazing thing is that this play was no where near as bad as Kobe elbowing Raja in last years playoffs. By this ruling, Garnett should've gotten a suspension for his elbow to Diaw's chin/throat in the last game. Marion got elbowed in the throat 2 games ago that injured him to the point of barely being able to speak, yet no suspension to Ruben Patterson.

I've got no problem with Kobe getting suspended for throwing elbows, but there's no consitency in the rulings.

Edit: On the Youtube video that Abomb posted, the elbow looks intentional. Kobe shoots and then swats his arm into Ginobili's face. after the ball is released.

I agree with a lot of what you say and dont want to argue the clip per se. There were several plays down the stretch of that game that were no-calls and make up calls. All we fans want is consistency!

Keep in mind there was no personal foul or technical foul called in game.
A foul call would've decided the game (tied & went to OT) so you knew the refs weren't going to call it either way.

He got the suspension because of his history as a cheap shot artist.

I'm baffled what Jackson is saying here. Anyone want to take a stab at it and explain it to me?

He's saying that Kobe is a premier player but isn't being treated like one

To quote Phil Jackson: "He f'n deserved it"

Looked pretty intentional to me. I mean, who swings their arm sideways when putting up a jump shot??

From Kobe's interview just now in LA;

--EVERYONE is PISSED--Mitch, Phil and the entire Buss family
--The Lakers are trying to get their case heard right now
--The league office called and spoke to Manu who said it was CLEARLY an accident--but they decided to suspend him anyways
--Kobe said he will RUN to the game in the cold IF the suspension gets lifted.
--Kobe said he was trying to draw the foul on Manu when it happened and he even asked if he was OK several times during the game.
--Kobe texted messaged his friend Bruce Bowen to see how Manu was doing today
--Doesn't understand what the league and refs have against him but it is getting pretty obvious

It's been brought to the leagues attention for years now that Kobe blatantly tries to draw fouls by leaning his elbows in during shots. This topic went full blown in last years playoffs when Raja brought it up and it was warranted. This may be the leagues attempt at telling Kobe to cool it cause it is obvious, even Kobe admits to it.

Do I think the game suspension is a bit much, perhaps. It's hard to say whether that was intentional or not, the argument can go either way. He was pretty out of control and it really makes no sense for him to flail his arm the way he did. I was watching the game and they panned in on Ginobli on the bench before OT started. He had blood coming from his nose and mouth (I don't feel bad for him one bit) and was an absolute mess. Bottom line is Kobe's been known for the elbows and now is probably a good time for the league to address the issue. Trying to draw fouls the way Kobe does happens league wide but he takes it to another level.

I Love this quote... I think I will incorporate it in my signature come the playoffs to remind me of the 'good times'.

Kobe and Manu are probably two of my least favorite players, so I don't mind seeing one get whacked with an elbow and one get whacked with a suspension, but there's no way that should be a suspension. "That's completely lood-a-cris" (sounds funny if you say it in your best Mike Tyson squeaky voice)....
