Kobe Bryant Again a Best-Selling 'Jersey' Guy

January 10, 2007
By Barry Janoff

NEW YORK -- Kobe Bryant’s return from marketing exile is complete, at least according to the NBA. The all-star player from the Los Angeles Lakers again has the most popular jersey in the NBA, based on jersey sales at the NBA Store in New York and at NBAStore.com from the start of the 2006-07 NBA season through Dec. 31, 2006.

Bryant, who had the most popular jersey during the 2002-03 season, regained the lead from the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade, who held the top spot since May 2005. Wade is now second on the list with LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers third and Allen Iverson (who had been with the Philadelphia 76ers during the sales period, but is now with the Denver Nuggets) fourth. Bryant’s Lakers remained No. 1 on the league’s most popular team merchandise list for the fifth consecutive season, while the NBA champion Heat are second. Sales figures were not released.

The NBA Store had its strongest sales quarter in history in the fourth quarter of 2006 including the best November sales ever and the largest single sales month ever during December 2006, per the league. This season marks the first with adidas as the official on-court uniform and apparel provider for the NBA.

OK let me see if I've got this right.

The Lakers play in the largest market in the NBA and they sell the most crap.

I never would have guessed.

Where did his jersey sales rank last year before he changed numbers?

True story...

I was in Burbank this weekend and I was watching the Suns/Lakers game and one of the guys at the bar had on a Raja Bell Jersey.

I asked him if he was from LA and he said yes. I then asked "But you are a Raja Bell fan?"

He said "Yeah, (beep) Kobe!"

So much love...

Where were you Chris? I was probably right down the street at my apartment ticking off the neighbors as I was yelling at the television.

I was at Gordon Biersch for the game. I was staying at that giant twin tower Holiday Inn. Nice nice place for a Holiday Inn.

Yep, been to that Gordon Biersch many a time. I live pretty much a mile on the other side of the 5 freeway from that Holiday Inn.

Later that night I went to this place called the Burbank Bar and Grill. They had a total trash 80s cover band playing there. It was fun but Scottsdale it was not =)

I could not convince my sister and her friends to go to Sunset Strip :p

Sunset isn't that great anyway--too crowded and not unexpensive.

Burbank Bar and Grill isn't that bad--good place to relax on a weeknight when it's not too crowded.

So if you live in LA, you HAVE to be a Laker fan and a Kobe fan??? Damn, I thought it was a rule that you HAD to like the team from the city that you live in. Who would've thought that there would be a Suns fan in LA???

The Valley so low.
LA may be a part of it, but think of the army of petulant showboaters and "It was good wuman skills and maybe cheating a little, but if it was rape that's OK too--gotta show those **s who's boss" idolizers that line up to buy the Kobe paraphernalia--he's got his own empire.
