The Clippers are trying to clear cap space to make a strong run at Kobe Bryant this summer. A league source said the Clippers' interest is being reciprocated by Bryant's camp. But that could be just a way of chumming the water in anticipation of an interesting free-agent season.

Not sure if all those rumors are true, but it sure does make for a good read.

Sort of like the anti-Bob Young. :D

The Chicago papers LOVE rumors, but this is hardly the first time this one has come up.

On the surface it seems improbable that the Clips could clear enough space to make a serious run for Kobe. Currently they are potentially at $32.7 million next year if they do not re-sign Richardson or Dooling. Even if the move Jaric ($2.1 million) and Ely ($1.7 million), that's only brings them down to $29 million before they make their draft pick which is likely to be more than $2 million. They may decide to unload Predrag Drobnjak (or leave him availaable to the Bobcats to clear $2.8 million).

A lot of "ifs" to get there, but probably no worse than what the Suns face.

If I were Kobe, I would worry somewhat about big bad Don, but I would be more inclined to sign with the Clippers than the Suns because I could really show the "home town LA" how I could take "my team" and put the Lakers not only last in LA but also last in CA.
That is, as long as my shoulder wasn't bothering me.:D

The town might not be big enough for both of them. :D

How many players have signed or been drafted by Sterling thinking they would turn things around? Just ask Danny Manning.

The Clippers are a BAD organization. They could pick the 5 best players in the NBA and still not win.

I don't believe Sterling even cares about winning.

Another thing you should look at is the way Brand and Maggettes contracts are structured. I remember reading something about how the Clips were going to be in trouble due to some strange clauses in their contracts. Something about Sterling having to come up with some really large amounts of money.

Hell will freeze over before Don pays the luxury tax. Once he got Kobe what makes Kobe or anyone else for that matter think Don'll go out and spend to get all the little pieces to win it all.

If Kobe does leave the Lakers I hope he does go to the Clips. At least we won't have to worry about him getting in our way 2 or 3 years from now.

The Clippers are 19-24 right now. If the let Richardson and Dooling go to sign Kobe how are the really that much better? No way do they win 50 games next year.

If the luxury tax will go into effect, this is the last summer it can. The CBA is up for renewal in 2005 I believe, and the luxury tax will not be included. So all free agent talk this summer should have nothing to do with luxury tax. Only things that happen this season.

I agree. I don't think they will get rid of it unilaterally, but the owners hate it almost as much as the players do. But I think it will be a bargaining chip to reduce guaranteed contracts to four years.

I agree with that. It's a very powerful piece of bargaining ammunition.

You know what? I didn't even realize that I'd passed the 4000 post mark today. I'm the only one in the top 10 that doesn't post on the Cardinal board. :D

Please do not compare the mentally ******** with an adulterous piece of crap.

Good riddance wherever you land Kobe.

Hate to disappoint you, BIM, but the odds right now favor him staying in Los Angeles with the Lakers--because of the trial (which looks more and more like it will be thrown out), he probably won't opt out.

Doesn't Kobe Bryant have to opt out of his contract earlier in the summer? I ask because it is very likely that his trial will not be finished by then. Of course I'm not sure if it would really make a difference as far as his contract goes. There has got to be some sort of morality clause that would make his contract void if he is convicted and sent to prison. So there probably wouldn't be much to lose as long as he's sure some team would give him a maximum or near maximum contract.

I think Kobe Bryan will be acquitted, opt out of his contract, and sign with the LA Clippers.

I'm guessing he has to decide at the start of the free agency cycle. Last year negotiations began on July 1 and contracts could be signed on July 15.
