Other tidbits.

By releasing Kevin Kolb the team will save 7.5 in cap savings, 11.5 in cash & will take a 6 million cap hit. (dead money) #AzCardinals

Cardinals officially release QB Kevin Kolb. Kolb was not willing to take the kid of paycut they wanted; obviously they weren't paying $11M

Best for both sides to move on and Kolb should have a decent market, Jets among his suitors

The dead money could be stretched out over 2 years, if the Cards so choose. Every team has the option to designate one player to do that with.

I believe you can actually designate two contracts as June 1st cuts and spread the pain.

Yeah, Buddy.

The Cardinals, I would estimate, are about $14 million under the cap by the completion of this move.

With the moves they have made so far, I can't see why spreading the money out over two years would benefit the team other than Bidwill's pocketbook.

Seems like if our goal is truly to purge ourselves of bad contracts and have flexibility moving forward, taking our medicine this year is the answer.

Operative term: moves so far.

You seem to be arguing that Free Agency for the Cards is de facto over... it isn't. And whether the "dead money" is accounted for this year or over two has no relationship to the Bidwill pocketbook. This is a CAP issue. Kolb already has the money in bank.

Yes, but I'll make an exception if they cut Snyder loose. He is $4M in dead money this year, but if we cut him next year, he is still $3M in dead money. I'd rather just take a hit of $2M this year and $2M next by making his a June 1 cut this year.

EDIT: And it looks like Colledge's contract isn't much friendlier either.

I'm happy to move on from Kolb. But I must say that guy took as many hits in his time here then most don't take in a career. He has guts, sad to say he doesn't have the talent to be a number 1 at least not while in Arizona.

In honor of Kevin, I put together a montage of his Cardinals Career. Highlights below:

Kolb is not a June 1 release designation. So #azCardinals take entire $6 mil cap charge this year. He's off books in 2014.

Disagree about the talent part. He was improving last season prior to the injury. The only thing that's going to keep him from being a starter is the injury-bug seeing as he can't develop if he's not on the field.

He's got guts, you're right. He'll land on his feet somewhere.

Kolb should be glad he's not playing college anymore. As many times as his helmet came off his playing time would have been cut in half.

Anyway, good to see the purging. As someone said, take the lumps this year and free space moving on. The sooner they can flush the last 3yrs of bad decisions the sooner they will contend again.

@kentsomers: so Kolb's release frees $7.5 mil of space, according to my math. Efforting to determine team's cap situation now.

@kentsomers: Kolb is not a June 1 release designation. So #azCardinals take entire $6 mil cap charge this year. He's off books in 2014.
