Now I can quit having that nightmare where the Spurs roll Barry out onto the floor in a wheelchair and he hits a 3 to bury the Suns.

The Spurs decided that Udoka's play has been too good to lose minutes when Barry comes back. He shoots the 3 at about the same % as Barry and plays defense that Barry only dreams about. Elson just couldn't grasp the Spurs defensive rotations. They are hoping that Thomas is a little smarter.

So how smart is the Seattle GM?

He gets three first round picks for paying Kurt Thomas' average salary for one season.

And KT contributed a lot to their team in the locker room and on the court as well. Basically he even earned his salary.

Paying for *half* of one season, but the contract is higher than average. $5M or so should be average; that is the mid-level exception.

EDIT: KT's contract was $8M this year IIRC

Their GM isn't even done yet. Last I heard, he was still trying to find a new team for Delonte West.

This sounds like a fair deal for me. Doesn't really improve the Spurs.

Isn't Brent Barry an important bench player for them? Their best 3 shooters with 43%. They might be thin at SG/SF now, have to rely on Udoka who is only 32% from 3p. I don't think losing Barry is very light for them.

Elson is a servicable 7-footer, was doing fine in their system. KT is a better talent with more experience. That's a nice upgrade. But by all means KT is only 6-9 and 235lbs, how much better he can be, defending Shaq or Bynum?

Sonics manager just needed to say to Pop, "hey, we'll waive KT if nobody wants to trade for him, fellas". What do you think they'd react? The move is simply one to prevent the best TD defender from joining a competitor after the waiver, most likely with Suns or Mavs. It's just like when we wanted Ely they traded for him and shelfed him for the rest of the season.

Aren't the Sonics just going to cut Barry and let the Spurs resign him?

Elson had been Pop's dog house for at least a month. It was pretty evident for anyone watching them that the guy had a very low BB IQ. He kept missing defensive rotations. KT is a big step up from that, considering he has a pretty good BB IQ.

Never mind of that. I still don't think KT can do very much against Bynum and Shaq. Maybe they would put Duncan on Bynum, let KT deal with Gasol?

They paid the price by losing Barry and his 43% 3p. If the Sonics really waive Barry, we should pick him up ASAP!

Barry can't sign back to Spurs within 30 days after waiver, league rule is, any player signed after March.1 is not going to be in playoff roster of 12.
