No, they won't. Nor will Orlando Hudson.

And Hudson is as good as gone. This deal is way too much money for a very replaceable player but I guess I'm okay with it as long as it's only three years. The team desperately needs Stephen Drew and Chad Tracy to step up now, after Hudson leaves in 2008 they will be the only LH bats in the lineup.

I think Montero may be another lefty bat. They need to move tracy to 1st and move Jackson

Yeah I'm not too thrilled at the thought that O-Dog's going to be leaving. But if we can get a decent pitching prospect for him, then maybe. I mean, O-Dog is an allstar, and I think that we could get 2 midlevel prospects or something. It's interesting.

Good point... However, if they are able to make a deal with Quentin/Gonzales and/or others for a young, high-quality replacement for O-dogg, I'll feel better about things. However, in the perfect world, they would also sign Hudson... 'Course, only teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets do that crazy stuff!! :bang:
If you're going to complain about lower payroll and FA's, then find some other team to root for. This team will always be a small market spender if they're in the lower 10 in attendance every year. So unless you're buying tickets and going to games, you're part of the payroll problem.

Nothing suggests Carlos Gonzales is a can't miss prospect. People are upset that a young player who hasn't proven a thing may be blocked by Eric Byrnes?

If Gonzales has Major League ability he'll find his way into the lineup. But to let a proven major league player leave the team so we can give a young player a chance to make the roster is a little backwards

My problem is that Byrnes is largely unproven as an everyday outfielder deserving of a long term, big money contract. This has been by far his best season ever, as he's a career .260 something hitter. Is that a player worth that kind of money?

I had the same feelings about Luis Gonzalez when we signed him. I'm not saying that Byrnes is going to turn his career into what Gonzo accomplished but he is leaving it out on the field and is a huge reason we're in first place

Sure. I hope Byrnes proves that he's worth the money, I really do. I like the guy and the team will need him to produce. I'm just hesitant to give a journeyman that kind of money after 3/4 of a really good season (that followed an OK season). Gonzo at least had hit .330 something with power and RBI, but I hope the analogy proves to be correct.

Also, I think the D'backs shot themselves in the foot, they could have had Byrnes cheaper when he was talking to the media saying he would give the home team discount. They got played by the possiblity of getting nothing for Byrnes after this season

If he left they would have received 2 high draft picks, so they would not have gotten nothing.

My guess is this is the home team discount, him settling for 3 years rather then 5. The money was never going to be lowered, he wanted 10 no matter what.

I'm glad it got done, but like others have said I hope it wasn't the final nail in regards to Hudson.

I wonder if Quentin is finished packing yet?

Then again at the press conference he said this:

The tough bargaining finally over, Eric Byrnes came clean Tuesday with the Diamondbacks and admitted he never wanted the five-year deal that led to a breakdown in talks last month.

"I think three years is enough time to really go out there and see what this group can do," Byrnes said a crowded news conference to formally announce he had signed a three-year, $30 million contract to stay in Arizona.

"I never wanted the five years, it's interesting to note, Josh," Byrnes said drawing loud laughter as he turned and looked at General Manager Josh Byrnes.

Emilio Bonifacio is one of the best 2b prospects in the minors, was just named fastest baserunner and best defensive 2b in the Southern League. I'd imagine (and hope) if they move Hudson, it'll be for a young starting pitcher.

Bonifacio's not ready. He's got a sub-Tony Womack OBP in his first year in AA. His KO-to-walk ratio is like 4-to-1. This is his 5th year in the minors, so he's on the slow boat to the bigs.

Interesting, but who knows what actually went on behind the scenes.

If this means that O.Hudson doesn't get signed, I am not as excited as some.

Hopefully, it's not an "either or" situation. But, I'm happy they got at least one of them, I figured both were gone.

I like Byrnes and think he's a good guy to have on the team, but as green machine pointed out the team would have received two high draft picks. Those picks would have been better than any prospect they'd have gotten for trading him at the deadline. I would have let his replaceable production been paid for by someone else, but hey, re-signing a guy because the masses want you to always works out.

I think Hudson is much less replaceable, but I'd imagine he is gone.

...uhmm, Barry Bonds has only hit more than 50 HRs once in a season (the year he hit 73). Would you have resigned him in 2000, before he ever hit more than 50?

That's enough.

Edit: for some reason you guys seem to think I'm messing around. I'm not. Take it to PMs -- last warning.

I would be for trading Quentin but not Gonzalez. We need insurance just in case Byrnes doesn't pan out (hope he doesn't) or Upton or Young. I a couple of years we could bring up Gonzalez who is only in AA and might be a couple of years away from the majors.

Trade bait as of now would be Q, Tracy or CoJack. Despite being a poor fielder Chris Carter sounds like the power hitting corner we need at first, he may not hit for average but neither Tracy nor CoJack have been lighting it up for average.

I have to missing something here... Exactly what did Quentin do "last season" that would suggest he is a "great prospect"?? If anything, IMO over the last 2 years he has showed just how average to below-average he really is... Expecting stud pitching in return for Quentin is soo wrong...

However, I am very, very happy to Byrnes staying with the snakes... This season is certain an above-average year for him, but his attitude alone and leadership abilities are worth keeping him around! Nice move by the D-Backs!!
