Leinart is due to make a $18M escalator in 2010.

He needs to redo his deal and turn part of that bogus escalator into signing bonus or future years on his contract.

If he is unwilling to do this, then he should be cut.

First its 15 mil. and he only gets that money if he is actaully on the team for 2010. Second that is exctly what they will do or any team for that matter.

Ever rookie gets a poison pill put into their contracts in the final year or second to final year of their contract. Its pretty much standard in all rookie contracts especially top 10 picks. Example - See Fitz. Agents do it to force players to get another deal sooner rather then later. Its also why when we hear the 50+ contracts they are bogus becasue most of that money and in Matt's case half of it is locked up in the final two years of the deal of which they will never see.

For cap purposes the Cardinals need to give Warner the maximum # of years on any new contract, not the number of years they think he will play.

How would you structure $18M over two years for Kurt?

I would do it as such. Pays Warner a hefty fee and saves our butts in 2010 if he retires or age catches up to him faster then we think.

For each year of the two years - 4 mill roster bonus, 3 mill base, 2 mill. in incentives similar to ones he had in his last contract - meaning lots of different ways to get them and if he is playing well he should be able to get them easily.

Warner wants to get what is fair but he is also willing to work for what is fair thus I think he would except the incentives if they are fair.

Leinart is due to make a $18M escalator in 2010.

He gets that for playing a modest amount of playing time his rookie year.

He has not earned that type of money.

In fact, he showed up in 2007 without learning the playbook and played absolutely horribly that year.

He basically stole money from the Cardinals.

Leinart is not near the player Kurt Warner is.

He needs to redo his deal and turn part of that bogus escalator into signing bonus or future years on his contract.

Stole? They signed the contract too. Kurt was great this year, sure. Going into the future you are risking a lot on an old man. That's something that could really really bite the team in the ass.

"According to Mortensen, while Haley has not been allowed to interview with the Chiefs yet, he spent a significant time on the phone during the week trying to get a coaching staff in place."

Thanks douchebag, maybe that time would have been better served working on our first half game-plan.

*don't take the above venom too seriously, I still feel like my balls got kicked into my stomach.

Fitz got his huge escalator by making the Pro Bowl twice--quite an accomplishment.

Leinart will get his escalator by playing something like 25% of the snaps his rookie year.

Big difference there.

You need to be forward-looking.

Fitz's contract should have been redone the year before he was due his huge escalator.

That way, both sides had something to gain by coming to the table.

The Cards rolled the dice. Fitz made his second PRo-Bowl and that triggered an escalator bonus. And then Fitz stuck it to the Cards. And who could blame him?

Look at the Leinart situation.

If the Cards bring him to the table now, convince him that he has a future with the team, turn all/part of the escalator into signing bonus, and work out a new contract, then they more easily manage their cap for 2010.

If they don't, and maybe Warner gets hurt/retires/decides to be a WalMart greeeter, then the Cards have no leverage with Leinart going into the 2010 season.

Leinart, who has done nothing of note in his NFL career, has the Cards over a barrel.

Pay him a huge cap-killing salary, or cut him loose and have no credentialed QB on the roster.

It's a no-brainer.

I think both sides (Cards/Leinart) would be willing to revisit that rookie contract this offseason.

Consider the source. No way has Warner shared nor did his agent share info on subject yet. PFT talk is equivalent to getting your news from The Star...

According to NFL

Network’s Adam Schefter, Warner wants a two-year deal worth about $9 million per year.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen also reported today that Warner wants two years.

Thought those were pretty good

good advice. He has the typical attitude of posters at the official site. Blast the players and front office and everyone else not named Warner. It tiring and upsetting to see especially after this years accomplishments. Hopefully people like this leave the board when Warner retires.

I'm all for re-signing Warner, but I hope the Cards don't look at the QB situation as black and white as the board does. Leinart is the future of this team and we need to keep him, too. If they cut him, it's business-as-usual Cardinals. You just know he'll go someplace like Chicago and be a perennial probowler.

I just don't understand why people are so down on him. He sat behind a guy who was an MVP candidate; there's no shame in that.

Exactly. Its not like he lost his job to a scrub.. Leinart has some of the same qualities that Kurt does. Hes smart, poised, and even offers a little more mobility, lol. He just doesnt have the cannon arm and doesnt read the defenses as well as Kurt, but that will come within time.

if we sign him for 9million i hope we get rid of leinart...is he making 8 mil next year?

have Leinart redo his deal. He has been paid WELL to hold a clip board....he should rework his contract for his future in the desert.

Sign Warner and keep Leinart. Any other combination of decisions would be stupid. Rework Leinart's deal into an extension, if you have to, to lower his cap hit and keep him happy. IMO, that's what should be done. Although, with no labor agreement after this next season, that sort of thing might be harder to pull off.

Yes, but when. He's only 3.7M against the cap in '09.

Before the big escalator kicks in. It would make sense, for both sides, to wait until after this upcoming season. But, it might be worth showing some faith in Leinart by doing a new deal for him before the end of the next season.

Makes sense... given that any deal the Kurt signs is in fact a year-to-year deal at this point.

I'm not that sold on Matt either personally just in terms of the fact it looks like Whis hates the guy.

Whis is so different I think he'd have a heart attack if we made Matt the QB, Whis is just built different than Matt in terms of how he thinks about things and the two don't seem to hit it off and that's probably going to mean that we just let Matt sit there then go quietly and that's ok by me too as long as we can find someone good to replace him a big if.

We'll be doing the QB of the future thing soon enough but guys like Whis usually hate raising pups as QB's it drives them nuts.

Ben and Whis didn't like each other either, Ben still had Whis monkey on his back until yesterday, I'd say it's gone now.

So let's say a 2 year $16 million deal for Warner (which I think he would take). How do you structure the deal for cape purposes? Say $10 million SB and a first year salary of about $2 mill and the second year at $4 mill.???? So his cap hit would be $7 mill in '09..........
