Matter on the in's and out's but that doesn't sound too crazy....especially after the way he has played.

Awesome news, I'm so shocked, I never thought he'd want to come back.

you play to win, Warner showed enough to me that it is worth it even if he is only to play at this level for a year of that two year contract. It is hard as hell to keep a winning team together now a days. you do what you must when you have these players on your team

If Warner did not say this, I have a grand idea... Offer him a contract before he is able to say "I retire". The Cardinals have the ability to shape this outcome and should at least try to get him back.

Huh?

That's a steal!!

If Graves could get that deal done, I think we should "crown his ass."

$18M/2 = $9M/year for a All-Pro, MVP level player.

Here is what is out of whack:

Leinart, $50M/6 years, or $8.3M/yr, for a clipboard holder.

I believe Kurt already said he wants to resign. Did so before the SB. Just depends on what can get done.

you keep Leinart, because Warner did something amazing this year...he played a whole season without injury and that might not happen again. Just view Leinarts salary as Warners to make you feel better if he would sign for that and Leinart is a much better backup than most

I don't have the exact figures in front of me, but Leinart isn't getting paid that much. That's the total value of the deal with all incentives (which his contract is full of) included.

Leinart is due to make a $18M escalator in 2010.

He gets that for playing a modest amount of playing time his rookie year.

He has not earned that type of money.

In fact, he showed up in 2007 without learning the playbook and played absolutely horribly that year.

He basically stole money from the Cardinals.

Leinart is not near the player Kurt Warner is.

He needs to redo his deal and turn part of that bogus escalator into signing bonus or future years on his contract.

If he is unwilling to do this, then he should be cut.

This was rumored talk before the game IIRC after the game Warner said he wasn't even sure he was gong continue playing. I dont see how he could end his career with a loss in the SB but who knows? We could go 7-9 and miss the playoffs next year.

Based on his past behavior, Kurt will want what is fair and shows the organization believes in him, but not hurt the organization. Even if it is a two-year deal, Kurt realistically could only play for one more year. Your right that last night Kurt said it was 50-50 whether he would retire. He also said though that he thought the team had great chemistry and that he enjoyed playing this year. Based on what he has said, he will take some time to reflect; talk to his family, coaches and teammates; and decide if he believes that one more year with the Cardinals is where God can best use his life. I believe that he will come back because the job is not done. I thought last year could be this year, when the Cards barely missed the playoffs. Next year they will finish the task. Then Kurt will retire. I may be a Pollyanna, but it could happen.

Let's worry about 2009... and Matt's contract is of little concern.

This isnt a slam on you or anything to do with how I feel or dont feel about Matt, its just a commentary on how people should start looking at contracts.

We need to get into the habit of looking at the structure of the contract and not the grandious totals that the media gives out, just dividing 50 by 6 years doesnt give you the correct story. 50 mill is only if he reaches all of his incentives and bonuses, of which he hasnt yet and wont until next offseason. Matts first 4 years in the league only averages about half that 8.3. Case in Point Warner and his incentives made 5 mil more then Matt this 2008 season.
