It's the best indication of where your depth is at. That comes into play on every punt, every kickoff, and every time someone goes down. Basically about 25% of the season.
If your second teams gets completely spanked every preseason game as a yearly right-of-august, you're going to suck, in general, year in and year out. Case in point, the Cardinals.

Yeah, but look at what the Redskins did in the preseason. They started their O-line the entire game all preseason, and they annihilated their opponents. Did it translate into the regular season? No.

Whether or not McKinley can open a hole for Josh Scobey behind Jason Starkey has nothing to do with whether or not he can block some other scrub playing gunner at kickoff. Whether Preston Parsons can connect to Arnold Jackson for 25 yards against Pete Hunter with Colson Weatherington applying pressure is utterly meaningless on whether or not he can hold a clipboard. We have no idea what coaches see when they watch pre-season game film on Monday morning. Perhaps Wildman can tell us, but you have no idea. Kasper wasn't even on a team in week 1, but was our starter at the end of the season.

What does Washington playing their starting O line all preseason have to do with anything?

If team A's backups are better than team B's year in and year out, team A is going to be better year in and year out. I don't know why you're arguing this point.

If that is the strategy why not lower the bonus and over pay in guarenteed 1st year salary so if it doesn't work out the bonus impact is less in the remaining years?

There's no such thing as guaranteed salary.

Seriously though, like I've said before...His salary could be 20 million dollars, but if his SB is only a dollar, I'm happy.

4 million may seem like a lot to you and I, but in regards to the salary cap, it really is'nt that bad. Especially if he plays for a couple of years.

I used to not like the way we did contracts, but over the last couple of years, I think it has proven to be one of the better methods for managing the cap.

the question is...

Does "Managing the cap" = 4-12 teams every year?

A couple of points.

Section 11 is exactly correct. It was telling how our season would go in the pre-season by how poorly our 2nd and 3rd teamers got clobbered. Teams were quoted as saying just how suprised they were by the lack of depth on the Cards.

You can do just about anything you want when drawing up a contract. The Cards could make Holliday's first season's money guarenteed if they want to, they just need to put that into the contract. It's just that 99% of the time teams don't do that.

So give Holliday a 2 mi signing bonus and a first year guarenteed salary of 5 mil. This gives Holliday is up front money without dragging out the cap hit, if we do need to cut him. The downside to this is Holliday takes the money and coasts or feigns injury this year. Wouldn't be a brillant choice on his part as he would be a FA again with lesser value that this year.

Then if the Cards were truly creative they could put a roster bonus of another 2 to 3 mil for the year 04 and if Holliday has proven himself then buy all means keep him on board, otherwise cut him and take a 1 mil cap hit.

Yes there are some advantages on how the Cards have managed the Cap the past couple of years but, until they get more creative in situations like this they will struggle getting to the next level.
