Unfortunately, this shows that apparently there isn’t a team out there willing to trade a decent point guard for Ariza.

If this tells us anything it's that there was no way a deal would have pleased some of this fickle fanbase. There seriously was no way that James Jones could trade Ariza for anything less than All-Star that would have made people happy. Doing the deal got him bashed and not doing the deal is now getting him bashed. Perhaps the problem isn't Jones so much as the expectations that some people have.

Suns actually have the least to lose in this snafu. It's known that Ariza is gone. Memphis and Washington have to deal with their almost traded players.

Or perhaps he’s being bashed because he didn’t confirm what players he was receiving in return?

The deal would need to include a different third team.

If the Suns are intent in taking on Austin freaking Rivers, the Wizards could add Jeff Green, and the salaries would work. At least Green could potentially give us for the rest of the year what we hoped to get from Ariza.

When he did confirm it the deal died, so he didn't agree to anything. The deal couldn't be made official until 10pm AZ time, when it's 12 at the league offices and Ariza could officially be dealt. Woj reported all of this prematurely, Jones was doing his job.

It was Washington that screwed up the names. Of course, they are a mess just like us. Seem like perfect trade partners

We screwed up more by not actually talking with the team whose players we were about to acquire.

If what the reports are saying is true (that Suns/Grizzlies were not in contact) then it's a little more forgivable. Though, given the recent history, Phoenix will still end up being the butt end of many jokes as a result.

How is that forgivable? How can you trade with a team without actually communicating with that team?

Bet Jones is on the phone with the Lakers right now.

I can hear him now, "Just give me anything. Ariza is yours".

Maybe the Suns should trade for Kelly Oubre. He will be a RFA next season.

Or that our front office is just too stupid or incompetent to fine it.

I would be for that, provided he doesn't want out of Washington because they suck. I've heard he's asked them for a trade but I'm not sure of the reasoning. He could be a PF for us. He's a large SF now but with the way the league is headed he'll be played as a PF by whoever has him.

Scary if true that Sarver has the potential to turn down a better deal for stupid reasons.

I'd be all for that. If they were going to trade with the Wizards, this should have been the return to begin with (ideally with Satoransky thrown in).

Of all the permutations, I like the current one best. Keep Ariza, trade him at the deadline if there's serious interest.

This actually feeds my "ruse" theory. At this point, I expect Ariza to be gifted to the Lakers.

Like the rumored trade for Shai.

Isn't that what half of the fans wanted though? You see the complaining here that is basically "If Jones helps Lebron again so help me...." so a trade with the Lakers would have been bad, especially if they weren't parting with one of their young core, who people wanted, so now bashing Sarver for saying that a deal couldn't happen with the Lakers is odd. Any deal with them would have brought out the pitchforks calling for Jones head and Sarver kept that from happening and now he's a bad guy for that? It seems ridiculous.

We did talk to the team and that's when it fell apart. Washington was acting as an intermediary and tried their best to get a deal done for a player they wanted. It was a communication screwup by them that fell apart after clarification.

The situation may have gone too far to pull it back.
