Just read the article, it's an example of why I don't miss Mitch at times.

What is there to miss ? He still writes articles, and two clicks of a mouse button gets you there (or a few touch screen taps of a finger).

Plus the threat, of "I am going to take my ball and go home if you do not agree with me" is gone. Its win/win.

I was a big supporter of Keim at first but I keep getting more disappointed with his drafts. The release of Holden and Boehm for questionable guys is not good. It tells me the guys he drafted are worse than than other teams cast offs. If Nkemdiche and Reddick don’t step it up this year then I’m ready for a new GM.

I REALLY Like the Rosen pick and Humphries has played well when healthy so I’m not hating that pick either. Cooper had bad luck I think and Bucannon was just picked too high.

Agreed.

Keim's draft record has been quite poor lately. Especially at offensive line. Maybe Mason Cole is the comeuppance ?

One can only hope.

RIght now NKemdiche is the one pick that is really bothering me. He is a complete non-factor. He was MAN HANDLED in the Saints preseason game.

I guess these GMs must be part of MENSA. I guess poor ol me nor anyone else could hack it. By the way, the GM isn't the only person responsible for managing a team, they have plenty of help.

Have you seen John Dorsey? He didn't even know about any of Dez Bryant's stats before Dez was scheduled to come in. I mean, that's his job and the dude was oblivious.

Oh yeah, and Jaws talent evaluation sucks. Remember when he praised Logan Thomas and said he projects to be an all pro? Or what about when he said colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest qbs ever? I figured you wouldn't so I found the article for you:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-cardinals-logan-thomas-best-rookie-qb-so-far

Just because you played at an all pro level does not make you a great talent evaluator. There's a lot of nepotism in the NFL.

I would honestly take someone like Choppers talent evaluation/ability to construct a team over most the GMs in the league.
Well...you know I'm gonna like that post!

There is a bunch of nepotism in the NFL. Where you see teams that have advantages over other organizations is that they embrace diversity in thinking and viewpoints. Beware of any NFL guy acts like he knows it all. The Patriots stockpile draft picks because they know the fail rate of those players. The Rams are maximizing vet deals and new contracts while their QB is on a cheap, rookie deal. The Steelers use a matrix to identify mid to late round WRs to draft. The Vikings stagger contracts to be able to afford and keep their talent on defense.

Where did the Seahawks go wrong? When they believed they solve the puzzle.

The best teams/organizations in the NFL understand that you can both value metrics and the eye test, and best option usually marries the two. NFL people want to keep the boys club going by making it seem like no one else can do the job that they do. With all of the information available these days, that is just no longer the case.

In a league where several teams do not even roster a FB, some dummy is preaching that we should have kept two eh...We probably need more thumper ILBs who can't cover and some 4.7 40 CBs who can tackle.

You're making my point we read other people's opinion and use them as our own. They're many people in this board who knew a great deal about football. But without the information, the all 22 tape, and knowing the play call we're all just guessing.

Thats a false assumption. Gms have more information to work with no doubt. But that doesn't mean that someone who has followed the game their entire life couldn't make better personnel decisions given the same information.
Its decision making and risk management... Not magical football rocket science

But 'Joe Fan' is never given all the information, so they can never say they're right based solely on deduction... unless, it concerns a punter named Butler where there is no information or talent :)

Without knowing the play call and assignments, you are correct. In terms of fundamentals, roster construction, and player value, fans can be easily as knowledgeable as some NFL GMs. So much of being successful in any business or industry is understanding how to get to the best solution vs innately knowing what it is. You don't have to be the smartest person in the room about widgets to be the best at running a widget company. You just need to know what info you need and how to get it to make the decisions you need to make.

Good thoughts on both sides of the argument. To me this is much ado about nothing now that Penny is signed to the practice squad.

While I often disagree with Mitch on his inane Patriots comparisons, I do agree that Penny earned a roster spot over the seemingly useless BWill. To hear the Cards talking heads describe Williams as a special teams demon is laughable. Just because you run down the field faster than everyone (and that’s debatable), I’ve not once seen him make an impactful play. Not last year and certainly not this preseason. When you factor in his negative value as a position player, it makes it even more glaring.

At least with Penny you garner similar special teams value with a potential goal line battering ram. Personally I would have preferred Penny, but the coaches and FO felt differently. What I don’t agree with is Mitch’s propensity to stretch the truth to fit his particular narrative. In this case suggesting the coach has all of a sudden gotten soft or lost his way because of a single roster decision is irresponsible journalism.

with youtube,...fans have access to more information than ever before. we wont know if a guy is nursing a secret injury,..or if maybe he likes to play with himself during team meetings... but we can see the tape....every snap a guy takes is available for evaluation these days...
I think sometimes the decisions are confounding when the talent on the field is obvious...also, when a GM decides to get a guy and he is apparently just hoping that the dude is gonna suddenly just stop being who he has always been....i.e.... Robert Nkemdiche

even on this board of "Know nothings' and "stupid people'... there was only a few guys who wanted Nkemdiche.....all of us idiots could clearly see who he was going to be in the nfl

and so far all us idiots have been correct.

there were dozens of WTF??!! reactions when we picked Brandon Williams...... and so far nobody has yet to figure out exactly wtf......because he still suxx...but they keep on giving him a roster spot...

there has to be some magical nfl level voodoo going on with some of those decisions

oh...and the kickers...damn

All true but without having access to every practice and the tape means we're guessing on talent and who should make the team. As far as constructing a roster any fan can do it, but we don't know particular schemes and what the team wants to do in certain situations. This will affect the roster building process.

I don't recall anybody saying they knew more or are better informed than the coaching staff.I think people are questioning some moves because on the surface the moves look like either lateral moves or a step down in talent.Cutting guys who are Young and have actual experience for guys who couldn't crack a active roster for several years makes one wonder why?Just because a guy has seen a guy on a PS for couple of years doesn't seem like a good reason to cut a guy who has actually played in a game that counted.I know it is coachs choice, but seems at face value a ******* choice. If this guy is such a source of talent then why hasn't he even made a active roster(Clausdell).

+1

Where I get off the wagon on this, is when they call the coach/organization a bunch of liars because of a few moves at the bottom end of the roster.

Same guys who "sucked" last year in the eyes of the fans are now looked at as losses to the roster.

I have a feeling a couple of the players that they just signed will probably be off the roster in the 1st month, FYI.

They are going to churn the bottom of the roster, and bring in Wilks guys and replace the Arians guys.

Just like all the coaches do.

Why? I never understood why a few of you say these types of thing about mitch or anyone posting their thoughts or opinions on something. He posted what he felt was a bad decision about penny, just like you probably posted about the bad decisions the cards made and yet he gets blasted for it. It's ok for you to post your opinions on something but not mitch? Makes zero sense to me.

Well lets be fair. Mitch was always allowed to post what he wants.

Now if you disagreed with him, sometimes THAT was not allowed, at least by him. If you are going to have strong opinions, you get strong reactions.

Better off he is blogging. He definitely brings a lot of conversation, tho.

So your saying you are glad they keep a worthless Williams over a guy that will make more meaningful plays as in Penny?

I will say that I am glad they kept Williams over a 2nd string fullback, that would be inactive, and not add value past being an emergency fullback.

Derrick Coleman is the better fullback, and beat out Penny. IMHO.

They sucked and they still sucks probably but I can expect better replacements
I dont know any of them, but they collect 20 starts all togheter and their stats are poor and no much area of improvements considering they are older then the guys they cut

Daniel Jeremiah was told by a flurry of teams that Thomas projected as a tight end -- not quarterback.

And where is Thomas playing now, TE.

If the issue is whether we fans can be as smart as football FO people without being privy to inside info...

My short answer is "no." (Logic suggests that, when you know more, you're more likely to make better predictions or decisions).

But the football gods don't let things operate that way (i.e. that "can't miss" QB or LB is likely to shred an ACL, commit dumb penalties or a gazillion other things can go wrong).

All we can do is respect what a fellow fan says and, most important, cool it with the certitude (i.e. you may think you know, but you don't really know).

Let the game come to you rather than try to prove you can predict the future (If we were that shrewd, we'd be Gil Brandt).

Think of Mitch as a columnist, free to offer his opinion, not a journalist married to the 5 W's.
