Hasn't anyone else noticed all throughout the history of music that there has always been one member of the band whose contributions were really significant, but weren't adequately recognized if at all? Mainly because their "bandmates" efforts overshadowed theirs....I could think of 4 easily and there are several others...

1) George Harrison- His guitar playing, vocals, and writing kept on improving
and how he added Sitar to the Beatles repertoire gave
the same extra lusture. Of course John & Paul grabbed
most of the spotlight.....

2-John Paul Jones- His bass playing and use of the keyboards helped anchor
Led Zeppelin's sound immensely... Of course people
seldom mention him because Plant, Page, and Bonham
were all beyond talented...

3-Brian Jones (Rolling Stones) His versatility gave the Rolling Stones
several dimensions that were never matched
by Mick Taylor and Ron Wood... Jagger and
Richards got more attention, but Richards
to me personally has always been overrated..

4- John Entwistle- His bass, horn, keyboard playing, witty lyrics, and
how he anchored The Who on stage contributed a lot to
the "staying power" of The Who... Moon, Daultrey, and
Townshend are usually the 1st topics brought-up when
someone refers to them....

Who can anyone else think of that finally deserves their due?

Alex Van Halen - he was always overshadowed by his brother's revolutionary guitar playing, but I love his drumming. Hot for teacher is great.

Warren DeMartini - Guitarist for Ratt. Never mentioned in the best guitarists, but his style was very melodic and very different than the other popular metal bands of the time.

Is that the local guy from Flotsam and Jetsam or the original bassist, or someone completely else?

Tommy Lee. I am not a huge Motley Crue fan, but you can definitely tell that something is missing when you hear them without him playing the drums.

I also would add Michael Anthony... His bass playing has always complemented Alex's drumming brilliantly and I've always loved his vocal harmonies.....

Others that deserve more recognition would be Tony Banks of Genesis... People always raved about Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins vocals (also his drumming), and Michael Rutherford's guitar playing, but without Banks keyboards/synthesizers, they wouldnt have achieved the greatness that they did.....When they began to sell out (mainly because of Collins' sudden popularity) with all those ballads..they were never unable to fully recover....

Perhaps it's just me, but Alex Lifeson of Rush doesnt get much of his due.. Yes, we all know Geddy Lee is probably w/in the top-5 bassist of all-time, and Neil Peart's drumming is #1, but they have always just detracted all the attention away from Lifeson.....His guitar solos are definitely among the best ever, but he's the "unsung hero" of the band....

Others would be Andy Summers of The Police and whether it be Mike Starr/Mike Inez along with Sean Kinney forming the steady rhythm section of Alice-in-Chains....

Sammy Hagar > DLR
I seriously think that Gary Cherone was better than both Hagar and Lee Roth combined....I mean, Van Halen III was their best album ever!

I would have to commit myself if I was actually serious! :)

This reminds me of a conversation some friends and I had once after Hagar left...We were thinking of possible replacements, and I sarcastically suggested
Stevie Wonder....Don't get me wrong...I really love his music, but my idea was that they tried to combine Stevie Wonder/Van Halen songs together... Just imagine Stevie doing the vocals to "Jump" and then the band performing something like "You Are The Sunshine of My Life".... Oh how hysterical would that be....

Okay, I guess I hijacked this thread....I should just:banned:myself....

Let's not forget the great Steve Hackett. The most under-rated guitarist in Rock. Genesis never sounded the same after he left the group.

I should add Traffic's Chris Wood onto this thread....

Sure Steve Winwood (his virtuosic assault on a variety of instruments along with his stellar vocals), Dave Mason (his solid guitar, vocal, and sitar contributions), and Jim Capaldi (his steady drumming/percussion work) gained more attention, however, there weren't too many rock musicians who flourished on saxophone, flute, and other Wood (no pun intended) instruments such as him.....

Just listening to his amazing perfomances on every Traffic album (IE "John Barleycorn Must Die" and "The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys") really captivates me..... Noone in rock-n-roll has since (or before really) achieved such "mastery" on those instruments...and I honestly believe never will.....

Steve Luthaker the guitarist from TOTO.

I definitely agree......Must not forget both of the Porcaro brothers....

It's somewhat of travesty that they're always remembered for "Rosanna" & "Africa" which didnt truly showcase their talent like the albums before that and their session-work did......

The Pocaro brothers, in my opinion one of the best rhythm sections of all time.
TOTO has never stopped recording. Simon Phillips now plays drums for them.
I highly recommend listening to the stuff they have put out over the last five or six years, it's some good stuff.
I also recommend the Steve Luthaker, Steve Carlton live recording from a couple years ago.
