Just thinking that Afflalo might be the next Raja.

So he will be an absolutely average shooting guard with no offense except spot up jumpers?

I wouldn't pay full MLE money for that.

The Suns said they are looking for a shooting guard who can create offense for himself and can be a go-to option in crunch time. Afflalo does not fit that description at all. Also with Nash-Afflalo-Dudley-Morris-Gortat the Suns would easily have the least athletic lineup in the entire league.

They need to avoid making any long term decisions based on how they fit in with Nash but unfortunately, until this organization moves away from Steve, they need to put people around him that can play with him. If the team is really serious about improving on defense hopefully they will use that side of the ball as the deciding point for anyone new they bring in. We certainly don't need to continue adding players that only play offense.

Huh?
Signing FA's and drafting players is a long term decision,at least it should be.....when your top 2 players are pushing 40 and your team missed the playoffs.

There is no quick fix for Nashball anymore Steve.

I agree with you, but I don't see the Suns spending a whole lot on anyone right now. I am fairly certain that they will make a play for Chris Paul next summer.

Well, I mostly agree. If you're targeting a star, you get what you can regardless of the fit. However, if you're adding a short term role player kind of guy then it makes sense to get someone that should be able to work with our current style. It makes even more sense to completely dump our current style (along with Nash) but it's obvious we're not going to make that much sense.

BTW, I disagree that our top 2 players are pushing 40. In the second half of the season, IMO, Gortat was probably our best player and no worse than 2nd best. Right now, Marcin is at best a top 10 center in this league which highlights why we are so bad - our best 2 players are an aged point guard that has very little value from the all-star break forward and a big man who is arguably near the top 10 at his position. Our 3rd best player is a tossup between two solid role players (Hill and Dudley) and it's a precipitous decline from there to the rest of the roster.

Pietrus is a beast on defense when he's healthy. But if it lightens up our salary situation and gets us something good in return, what the heck.

I like Pietrus but I would like to get rid of his contract more. The Suns have too many wings and greater needs at other positions. I'm sure the Suns would settle for a second round draft pick.

I like what I THOUGHT Pietrus was. The guy that played for us last season was something else and him we can definitely do without. Maybe he just needs more time to acclimate but he was a disaster on offense and his defense wasn't what I was expecting either.

This is more accurate.

I may be completely wrong but I found it suspect when Pietrus never returned from injury.

Here's an idea: How about just the 8-10 best teams from last year play their own elite season in 2011-12, and everyone else can just sit back and save money?

Maybe we can get some of the richer Euro teams to join them. The trouble is, this means no more Suns unless we can get some Russian billionaire to buy the franchise. ;)

I know this was translated from French, but even so it certainly doesn't sound like he wants to be here anymore. You never want to hear your players complain about minutes or what not in public, even if it's not in English.

Of course if Pietrus cared so much about playing time, he could have just as easily not picked up the option for the final year of his contract and then he would have been free to sign with whichever team he feels would better suit his talents. The fact that he chose money over playing time and now is publicly indicating he wants to play elsewhere speaks volumes of both his priorities and character.

Mickael Pietrus:

“Phoenix didn't use me, but that's their problem. I'm going to continue working. The only thing I care about is winning a title... A lot of teams are interested in me, like the Lakers or the Celtics. This came from the best player in the world: Kobe Bryant. He told me two months ago that he would like to see me with the Lakers."
It certainly is...LOL i like this guy.

But seriously i agree that he has no place on this team now or in the future. We're ok with Duds and Childress at the wings. If Pietrus was a true stopper i'd consider retaining him,but even then this team is so far from being a strong unit of 10 guys that it makes no difference IMO.

We need a dynamic scorer at the 2,and a legit 4 who can score in the post.....but both need to be able to guard somebody.

WTF, he shot every time he touched the ball. The Suns got plenty of use out of him. His .364 FGA per minute played was one of the highest on the team.

I get the feeling you didn't subject yourself to too many Suns games last season. I'd wager to say that most of us that watched the Suns play felt we used this guy too much. Unfortunately, Gentry seemed to think his only choice was to play either Vince Carter or Michael Pietrus which was like choosing between awful and horrible. Pietrus probably wins that battle but there really wasn't much difference.

I think i watched a total of 6 games last season(by far the least amount of interest since i've been watching for the last 25 yrs)....Six....its all i could handle during Nashball recycled season #3.

Steve,i honestly cannot wait to start caring about this team again.....

Well, this should be the year for you. The season long lockout will finally give you something to care about.:)

I watched every game again (like I always do) last season but it was not much fun. The only thing that saved it for me was watching Gortat come into his own. We've been so starved for a decent center it was nice to see his development over the second half of the season. And, on defense, it was kind of fun to take bets on which Phoenix Suns player would get picked off by Warrick. It's the little things in life that make it all worthwhile.

Oh, the agony of defeat.

You must be a student of the game or are entering the realm of becoming a masochist. :D

I closed the book on last season and I do not want to relive the horror.

I recorded all the games - in case something significant happened, like winning. My interest bottomed out the last couple of years of D'Antoni and the second unit revved me up the year before last but once Gentry scuttled them, poof! Might as well have been Mike at the helm.

Pietrus on offense is the equivalent of Warrick on defense... both are a net negative to the team.
