if your looking at UT players in the draft and if Mr. Sweed is there in round 2 with potential WR contract problems in the future of the Cards...drafting him might not be a bad idea. His NFL potentail at the moment seems to be highly underrated and to me is a much better prospect than Jamal Charles after watching a majority of their games every year. Might not be Roy Williams of the Lions but actually could be not that far off and certainly not Quamie Cavil of UT's past. I'm tellin ya'...Sweed...shhhhh.

Curious to see his 40 times because in college he always struck me as slow?

Remember how everyone complained about Fitz' lack of separation and how so many of his catches were spectacular grabs because he's never wide open? Sweed strikes me as a similar guy except not as fast as Fitz and not nearly as good in the air or handswise. He has talent but he seemed to overly rely on his size in college to me.

Sweed has made some 'how the hell did he catch that pass' grabs but also seems to suffer from Terrell Owens drops as well. I say, Sweed and Fitz have about the same football speed but Fitz has the better hands by far.

Ran a 4.47 at the combine and I think 36 or 37 inch vertical. I wouldn't grab him in the first (someone will) but would definately snag him if he is there at 50

Surprised he ran that fast he never struck me as very fast. I'm betting he spent a few weeks at a speed camp or something before he put up that time he just never looked fast in college.

I would agree though around 50 on is where he probably comes into play in the draft.

Oh, I think he'll go earlier than that, just that I wouldn't want the Cards to take him until then. I think he may be going to the Titans with there first rounder.

We should just take the little ball of electricity from Cal in the first round and get on with it already.

Fitz can take a hike as far as I'm concerned.

JUST KIDDING. :D

DeSean supposedly ran a 4.35 at the combine which was the fastest listed time for WR's. I'm not surprised the kid can fly but he's so small I really worry how he'll hold up to NFL hits?

Well, he's the same size as Steve Smith, who is easily in the top five WRs in he NFL. You can't hit what you can't catch.

Yeah but Smith is pretty well built, DeSean is pretty slight. Don't get me wrong I think DeSean will be a very good pro I love the kid but he had problems with big hits in college, I wonder how he'll hold up in the NFL at his size. Remember the game against USC 2 years ago he got nailed early in the game by one of the big safeties think it was Taylor Mays, the rest of the game he was a non factor.

Terrific player just not sure he'll be durable in the NFL at his weight and frame.

Steve Smith is listed at 5'9", 185. At the combine, DeSean Jackson measured in at 6'0", 178. Jackson is going to get broken in half at the NFL level. Smith is a ball of pure muscle and hatred at everyone who never believed in him.

Who knows whether Jackson has the fire that Steve Smith does.

sweed never looked too fast that's true, but the guy always seemed to get seperation on deep routes which is a good sign. obviously the nfl corner is much faster, but the WR always has the upper hand in the nfl when going long. michael irvin was a 4.6 guy, but had plenty of success even going deep against much faster corners. what sweed has to do at the next level is be more physical in the middle of the field. especially with his size. he never really did that at UT as he was mostly a sideline guy with david thomas working the middle.

Irvin is a poor example

Irvin would simply push off heavy on the CB next to him and catch the pass, that is not allowed much now in the NFL even with the rules favoring the WR. A better example of a WR with no elite speed that seldom pushed off but got open is Jerry Rice.

don't get me wrong, Irvin was a player (if they allowed it, it's legal) but he would not be half the player if he was playing now with the pushoff taken from him.

Irvin was a physical WR and that's why he was a CB's nightmare there is no question because he wasn't going to beat guys with his speed. beyond that I compared him to sweed because he had a ability to get open deep despite being a slower WR. I think it had more to do with the timing that he and aikman had on the out patterns to the sidelines that CB's could not stop. If irvin was playing today? It doesn't matter he did what he did yesterday and it's over and done with. When rules are changed because of a paticular player it usually means he was pretty good at what he did. I think irvin scored a lot of TDs doing a lot of pushing off after he caught the ball(running after the catch) despite being slow. and jerry rice was faster than irvin btw.

just because the league or rules have changed doesn't take away from what players did in the past.

Very simple...READ

I did not take away anything he did in the past and qualified it in my post and what a player did in the past which made him successful most certainly does apply if that player needed it to be successful NOW. Read a post before you get all Dallas Cowboy Fan dribble on me and then attack one for something they clearly did not state. I took nothing away from him if one places the comments in the proper time frame of when he played and then addressing the hear and now. Deacon Jones was a GREAT DE in his time because he was allowed the head slap move but if he played now he would not have been allowed to do so and his play would have been affected and would not have had as many sacks because of it.

Peace Cowboy fan on a Cardinal forum site.

It's all good. peace.
I read your post. I didn't attack you.....we wern't/aren't on the same page and I was giving you my point of view...totally different than an attack. There's no way to know for sure how irvin or jones would look in today's game as they are too old....I just take them for what they were/are HOFers. so comparing sweed to irvin is a compliment and may be a stretch at best so you are probably right they probably don't compare well.
and I wasn't comparing Irvin's push off to sweed....I was comparing his down field play-making ability despite lack of great speed. also has ability to make tough catches despite not having a lot of room to operate. I can use boldin if Irvin bothers you. Sweed may not have great speed..... like boldin and Irvin both lack. but he has an ability to get down the field vertically and catch the ball. that's all I was saying. If anything comparing sweed to Irvin or even boldin is a compliment because he lacks the physical play that both of those have/had. That's what sweed needs more of.

hey Lorenzo, if we can agree on something...that is a love for the burnt orange. Irvin was a stud WR for his time and I leave it at that and think he should be in the Hall of Fame but doubt his career would have been as good with the push off taken away but since he can no longer play now...we both will never know who is right. Rice was dangerous because he knew every little of trick of wasting no motion and was the best route runner to ever play the game. Rice ran like around a whopping 4.6 on the forty during the combine much like Boldin. Hence, speed is not as important as some like to think. Your a Cowboy fan and then should know Emmitt Smith was never fast but had great vision and knew how to stay low and shed tackles. There is a lot I question about Irvin, but he did have that desire to win which is only found in the greats. Peace again LOL.

yes I do love texas and I agree sweed needs to be more physical especially for his size. yes the push off rule is enforced much different today.....so you can't push a guy while the ball is in the air or past 5 yards like the old days and get away with it all the time. but big WR's in this league have to know how to use their size to their advantage which is what irvin did....T.O. and Moss currently do(as they are much faster of course).....or even boldin is a good example of a physical WR who uses his body as an advantage. this is the one thing sweed needs to develop at the next level because in austin he was a sideline type WR and struggled at time running shorter middle routes. I also totally agree with you that a forty time does not equate to being great at a position. like you mentioned emmitt who ran a high 4.5, but was undoubtably the most durable elite runningback i've ever seen. I always thought Irvin was slower than rice, but both had a unique abiltiy of running after the catch. Rice because of his superior route running and those brilliant crossing patterns. Irvin more so for his ability to break tackles. Of course Irvin's off the field problems after the SB really hurt the cowboys and ruined the remainder of his career. although he played well at times after that....he was never the leader and elite player that he was before his legal problems. More important than irvin's play IMO was his ability to motivate and be a leader for the rest of his teammates. finding that in an elite player....especially at that position is a rarity. and that was wad made him more special IMO.

From what I have seen, Sweed is a like a Fitz wannabe. Same style but not nearly as good. If we are gonn go WR I prefer we go with someone who will stretch the field other that the guy who will just make us miss Fitz even more.
