We did it! Cassini is in contact with Earth and sending back data after a successful dive through the gap between Saturn and its rings.

Data from a billion miles away only takes 78 minutes to get here!

the unfortunate thing about space exploration is that when the spacecraft is built, all its instruments are state of the art..for the time.

But then it takes 7 years to go out and reach these destinations, that technology is now 7 years old and outdated.

It's just staggering how they are able to do these things. Can't wait to see more pictures!

These are the reasons I wish my brain could be put on a cyborg. I dont need to have active life, you can just beam what people are finding to me via news feeds. I really want to see the future

It's outstanding that it can transmit across that distance in that amount of time.

Light travels at 670,616,629 mph in a vacuum, which covers a billion miles in 89.47 minutes - and no signal can be transmitted faster than light in a vacuum. (Well, except for pairs of 'entangled' particles (typically electrons) which seem to transmit state transition information back and forth between them with zero time delay.)

Fun fact- while the radio can sure travel far, it's by no means instantaneous for spacecraft in the far reaches of the solar system due to the insane distances involved.
