This is my take. Whiz has sort of a dry sense of humor.

Also I think, as noted in the interview, a lot of research goes into the decisions Graves and Whiz make based upon facts.

I hope not because these two have made some of the most boneheaded, head scratching, flat out stupid moves I've seen in a while. I really hope they are just winging it. I'd hate to think someone puts so much research into something and still screw up as bad as they do.

"Based on facts"...such as their opinion that Kevin Kolb will be a franchise QB.

Good research there, fellas.

Let me guess your research is more reliable as to Kolb's future? Of course you Ed Burmilla.

I swear, Whisenhunt could sneeze and someone here would act like they were personally slighted by the guy.

The press conference is the usual fluff that you get from Whisenhunt and Graves. Nothing more, nothing less. They did say that they've liked Kolb since he was draft eligible and was #1 on their list including QBs in the draft.

If this is leveled at me for thinking he sounded like a jerk when he answered a question, you should know I don't take that as a personal affront. I might if I were asking the question, but even then, I'd simply follow-up with explanation of why it's an important one.

And, for the record, I've not been one around here that is calling for Whiz's head every other week. I not only think he's a pretty good coach, I think he's earned some leeway with us fans even when he makes a few boneheaded mistakes.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that RG did not seem at all happy during the press conference? When it first started, he had somewhat of a scowl on his face and he didn't join into the conversation at the first part of the press conference.

I think he realizes his job is riding on this decision.

Is there another press conference scheduled for today to announce FA signings?

and some of you thought we were going to sign another corner, let alone nmabdi asoughma. it's like y'all haven't learned anything after all these years.

I don't think anyone actually believed we'd sign Nnamdi, but we tried. You didn't even believe we were talking to him or considering it which is proven false, as is the premise that Whiz's remark meaning we won't go after a CB. Of course Whiz would make a remark like that. Questions like that put coaches in a no win situation. If they say they are going to sign a replacement, then they have to get one of they will be crucified and if they do fail to get one the guy on the roster who ends up being the replacement feels like the coach doesn't believe in him.

You have to give credit for at least pursuing the top player in FA. That's not the Cards of the 90s style.

Oh crud. Didn't that happen with McGinnis in the press conference after the Cards traded down to get Pace and BJohnson?

But in regards to press conferences we are responsible for them being dull affairs. If a coach says anything other than conventional coachspeak the fans and media are all over them. Coaches have lost their jobs because they actually said what was on their mind.

Just look at how the media jumped all over guys like Gandy at OSU, Knight and Parcells. Then they turn around and bash the rest of the coaches for giving them nothing but coachspeak. :bang:

In all fairness---the Cardinals called and Nnamdi told them he was not interested in coming to Arizona. Money was probably never discussed.

I give the Cardinals credit for trying.

As a follow up I've never understood why a high profile, highly paid coach or player didn't use some of their money to hire someone like Cheesebeef to write stuff for them or the people who manage the image of politicians.

The media loves funny guys. First thing I'd do would be to hire a writer from Leno or Letterman or Necessary Roughness to provide me with one liners to go with the usual mundane questions that come from the media and practice them with my PR people every day.

Just look at this now famous situation. When John McCay was asked about the execution of his offense he replied "I'm all for it."

Just think what NFL lore would be missing if he'd just replied in coachspeak.

Could be or could be that Nnamdi insisted on going to a contender which is why the Texans bowed out after offering $12-$13 million per (same as Eagles). Joeschmo claimed that it was reported he took less money to play with the Eagles then he was being offered elsewhere.

Point is the 90s Cardinals wouldn't even contact guys like this so the whole "same ole Cards" mentality isn't really applicable in this situation.

John McKay was a legitimately witty guy. Coaches such as him and Lou Holtz are few and far between. I'm not sure either one of them would make an attempt at humor in today's media circus, it's just not worth the effort. Humor is risky and you can't survive long in the public eye today if you're taking unnecessary risks. If you win, you can get away with the smug make-a-fool-out-of-the-reporter kind of stuff that Brian Billick used to get away with but look how quickly the universe turned against him once his team stopped winning.

I agree. They had a good idea of the kind of money he was after and they still put in a phone call. Not to say that a phone call is hard work but it shows they were willing to invest in the right kind of player.

Don't they turn on everyone if they stop winning? :D

I'm not talking about being a wise guy but just some good lighthearted stuff. If you've ever listened to Peter Jacobsen the Pro Golfer you'd have an example. He comes on Rome occasionally. The guys genuine and funny and people really like him and his answers.

But you are correct about unnecessary risks and sadly that's why we usually get nothing but coachspeak.
