Sean McVay has a unique way of connecting with his players, in part because of how young he is. It’s also because of his willingness to work and spend time with guys outside the locker room and away from the practice field.
His connection with Andrew Whitworth is just one example of that. Despite Whitworth retiring in 2022, he and McVay have remained close. They even started working out together in the early mornings this offseason, a new routine McVay proposed himself to Whitworth.
Trainer Ryan Sorensen posted a video of McVay doing squats at the gym, showing what an athlete the Rams coach still is.
Whitworth was also doing the same workout as McVay, training like he could still play in the NFL.
While on the "Pat McAfee Show" recently, Whitworth talked about his daily 6 a.m. workouts with McVay, revealing how the plan came together.
“Sean this year decided this offseason we were going to try to connect in the mornings, get some training in,” Whitworth said. “Sean McVay’s trying to – I think he’s trying to relive his Miami of Ohio days a little bit. He still thinks he can get out there and make it happen on the field, so we’ve been training every morning at 6 a.m. at a gym I have here in Westlake Village.”
How many other coaches are at the gym at 6 a.m. with one of their former players? And it's not just McVay and Whitworth who train at The Village. Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, Jordan Whittington, Tyler Higbee and now Coleman Shelton all work out there, too.
