I like Lyle Overbay. He's a good guy, a solid .280's hitter, and he's turned into a great fielding 1B in a short time.

But a 1B with only 24 RBI's with the season more than half over . . . demoted to 8th in the batting order . . . is not helping his team.

Last night against the Giants, Lyle came up four times with runners in scoring position -- twice with a runner on 2B; twice with runners on Second and Third. He drove in . . . . . . . . . . zero!

If he had come through a couple of times, the complexion of the game would have been different, and so might have the outcome.

The worst part is, that while he remains in the lineup, Kata, Cintron, and Counsell cannot all be in the batting order. One of them must be benched, as Cintron was last night.

Clearly all three contribute more to the lineup than Overbay. I can't believe that Alex would have failed four times.

It's time to move Hillenbrand to 1B full-time and start Kata, Cintron, and Counsell every game at 2B-SS-3B.

If the D'backs want to keep Mark Grace on the roster, Overbay has to be sent down. There's not room for two LH hitting 1B -- one an aging veteran hitting in the low .200's and the other who can't drive in runs.

It comes down to numbers and, in the case of Kata, Cintron, or Counsell vs. Overbay, who is best for the team right now! Unfortunately, it's not Overbay!

Good post, except this will never happen. The D-Backs will concede Overbay's not being everything they expected the day they do the same w/ Elmer.
If they do either or both, it would be implicitly conceding that moving the best 1st baseman in their organization was not the right move. As if we didn’t already know that it wasn’t.

I agree. Overbay has been on my **** list all year. he doesn't drive the ball at all, and strikes out 25% of the time. I would rather have Carlos Baerga playing first base than Overbay. Any where you put Carlos in the batting order he will hit and drive in runs. Overbay needs to be sent down.

When Junior comes back, the Diamondbacks will have to make a decision for a roster spot on the infield. Overbay should be the odd man out. I don't want to send Kata or Cintron to Tucson.

Grace, Baerga, or Hillenbrand can play first base. Counsell, Hillenbrand, and Cintron can play 3rd. Counsell, and Cintron can play short. Jr, Kata, Cintron, and Counsell can play 2nd.

This team doesn't need another punch and Judy hitting 1st baseman. It would make sense having Hillenbrand start at first, since his defense at third is less than stellar. Counsell is by far the best defensive 3rd baseman on this team, and Brenly likes him leading off. Cintron should be at short everyday, and Kata or Junior should be at second.

That team gives us our best chance to win in my opinion. I want Jr's bat in the lineup but, not at the expense of Kata. Our rightfield situation is tenuous at best. Q, Dellucci, Bautista, have not been, nor will they be the answer. Sure would solve alot of problems if Jr would warm up to the idea of a move.

I can understand Jr's reluctance to switch positions in the middle of a season but, that is the only way we can get Kata and Jr's bat in the lineup at the same time. Unless of course we move Kata to right. Kata has been solid in the two hole with an OBP of .422

Don't even ask me what i'd do with Wohack.

Counsell
Kata
Gonzo
Hillenbrand
Finley
Junior
Cintron
Moeller

That is our best lineup for the players currently on the roster. If we decide to make a trade and get a real rightfielder, all bets are off.

Kata was a SS, too. And, of course, Baerga can play 2B or 3B, too. Man, what flexibility!

Don't even ask me what i'd do with Wohack.
For the good of the team, he should be "Williams-ed". It's amazing how management clings to hopes that he'll improve again later in the season.

Even going from a pi$$-poor hitter to a mediocre one does not put him ahead of Counsell or Cintron.

Counsell
Kata
Gonzo
Hillenbrand
Finley
Junior
Cintron
Moeller

I agree! It looks like Danny B. is just not going to be back to last year's form this season. And Looch is a good backup and pinch hitter, but not a regular.

Womack may have a VERY difficult time getting doctor's clearance to begin re-hab assignment.... a VERY difficult time ;)

Reportedly Womack has declared that he's ready.... but the D'backs want to make SURE that Womack is "perfectly healthy" before any rehab work.... the doctors will be VERY careful with him.... can't risk further damage to the knees, y'know... esp. considering some Tonya Harding inspired D'backs fanatic could be lurking in the parking lot... heh

I heard the D-Backs are trying hard to trade Tony. Lets all keep our collective fingers crossed.

I don't doubt that they are trying to trade him. Not likely to happen, though, unless some team needs a guy with a big salary and who can't hit, can't field, and is coming off an injury.

The D'backs would have to cover a large part of his salary for the rest of the season, as they would have had to if Williams had moved elsewhere on waviers.

Either way, the money's spent for, as you said, a guy who can't hit, can't field . . . and doesn't steal alot of bases either.

Ironically, Womack might be able to help another team at 2B, SS, RF, or CF, given his record of improving during the second half of the season. Especially if he decides to steal 30 bases and act as a leadoff hitter!

Overbay has a lot of potential but he is going to struggle, like all rookies do. I think when Spivey comes back Counsell will go to third, Cintron at short, Junior at second and Shea at first.

Should the Diamondbacks call up Chad Tracy? Chad played first in college and I have heard he has been practicing at first in Tucson.

I was not that hot on durazo...too many injuries and he is better suited for the american league where he can play dh...

Durazo has also cooled off hitting wise..he is batting .276 with 10 homers in 301 at bats... Durazo seems to have improved in his walk strikeout ratio - for the dbacks he generally struck out alot more than he walked - but this deason he has 62 bb and 56 k's...

Both durazo and overbay are streaky (as are most players)...durazo started out very hot the first couple of weeks of the season and has cooled off since..Overbay started off the season very weak - then had a decent month or so and has since gone cold..

The big problem with overbay is what appears to be a complete lack of home run hitting ability..Unless he can figure this out - he will probably be replaced eventually - but not this season...

Don't give up on Overbay so easy.

I'm sure he would love to have his average 20 points higher. And, to have knocked in a few more runs.

But, the guy is workin his a** off from what I hear. It's already showing in the field. And, he has enough discipline upstairs to turn his stroke around.

Give the guy a break, guys. Your trying to get a rookie to post career numbers.

Tucson is not the answer.

It will be hard to move Hillenbrand to first. He has been making some outstanding defensive plays at third base.

The real decision for the Dbacks is going to be...Spivey or Kata.

Counsell is a better defensive third baseman than Shea.

I agree. He is quite a bit better.

And we can complain all we want about Overbay's at-bats, but his fielding has been damn impressive lately. I mean over the last few weeks he has made some absolutely critical plays at first base. These are plays that were the differences between winning and losing games, and I don't think Shea Hildebrand would have made many of them.

Overbay has surpassed everyone's expectations defensively. By far, it has been the most impressive part of his game.

I wasn't too pleased with Overbay's at bats yesterday, especially striking out in the 8th with a man on 3rd and only one out. Had he at least flied out to drive in the run, all of us at the game would have gotten free Chalupas. At least Mantei was able to strike out the side the top of the 9th to get us free Thirstbusters. :)

Damn missed yesterdays game and didn't get the Thirstbuster. As far a Overbay he is hitting around .280 and his fielding has really improved but only 24 RBI's. My guess is that when Jr comes back he will be in right field. If he play's 2nd then Overbay will be in Tucson giving us an infield of Counsell 3rd,Cintron ss,
Spivey 2nd, and Hillerbrand 1st.

Where did you hear this? Can you provide a source? Otherwise it's complete BS. You should not imply something is going on without some substantiation.

You really think the Dbacks want to keep Womack? Where are they going to put him? It just makes sense to try to trade Womack.

And for what it's worth I hope we don't send Overbay down so we can keep Grace on the roster. We could use a left handed first baseman, and Overbay is much better then Grace.
