See, there you have it. I believe I suggested soon after ST that Lyle needed to grow a moustache, to clearly differentiate himself from Matty for those whimsical beisbol gods. ;)

What is really interesting to me is how one can "buy into the hype" on a player and get onto people like myself who try to warn that the hype isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I did this with Overbay before the season started and I did this with Dessens after we traded for him. only to be pointed out by someone numbers such as "3.03 ERA" and ".343 hitter in AAA" and them not wanting to pay attention to the why's or how's.

Of course, what becomes of this is my expectations are normalized by the why's and how's and when the player performs to what I expect (or slightly a little better) than I end defending him 1/2 way through the season to the same people who expected this player to explode onto the scene.

The irnoic thing is I am the one accused of "relying on numbers" <laughing>

well, don't you? i mean, so what if you rely on numbers? in almost any modern profession you can think of, numbers are generally the most accepted form of evidence.

i think it's in the interpretation of numbers that people should be arguing about. like rob neyer for instance, who conveniently skips through numbers that 1. disprove his point (which is usually a very dumb point), and 2. elevate the stature of the diamondbacks.

it's the bigoted use of numbers which i don't like. on the other hand, the balanced use of numbers is only fair, and consequently welcome.

Well people knew that Overbay was not going to hit a lot of home runs. I never wanted to trade Durazo, except that his cost was going up and Overbay as cheap and had been in the minors long enough, so it was okay. (though I expected more than Elmer Dessens for Billy Beane's holy grail). But I don't think an OBP of .361 counts as a failure for a rookie. An OBP of .361 will contribute to a lot of run scoring by the team.

But I'm with Steve - right now I'm really sick of fans and their irrational bases for opinions on players.

What's further funny is that I follow a Phillies based message board with Schillingfan. They are very focused on the D'backs because they are competing with us (there I said it  ). Some posters there think of Arizona as "media darlings" and have definite persecution complexes about ESPN and NYC biases (and/or Boston biases, etc.)

true, the media hates us. We're leading for the wildcard and they write articles how we are a major disappointment this year. Say what?

Then whenever fans boo anyone they are compared to Philly phans who booed Santa Claus. ESPN hates us.

Well, for once your management is still trying to get things done. Maybe there is hope for Bidwill and the Cardinals.
Oh excuse me, I'm being irrational again, I did way too many drugs in college.

It looks like the Brass decided that sending Overbay to Tucson to play everyday was best for him and for the team.

That's what I felt when I started the thread. It makes sense!

I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I'm glad you started the thread to give a discussion forum. I don't think that just because the club made the move you suggested that proves you're right, but it supports your position is reasonable. In other words, there are plenty of moves the D'backs make you don't agree with too.

Personally I think it horrible (think of Bill Walton pronouncing it) that Overbay is off the roster while Mark Grace is on it. In truth, we can afford one sentimental spot. The problem is having Grace, Danny & Q not producing WITHOUT the in-game flexibility given by Robby Hammock as 3rd catcher, 3B, OF, etc.

Grace, Danny, Q, and Dellucci, to be more complete. But - Robby has been batting terribly for several weeks, so his demotion is logical. I agree sending down Lyle and not any of the above-mentioned 4 is dubious -- but I really thought he needed to get out of here and find his swing; hopefully he will do that. Basically we have a lot of deadwood on the team right now.
