Sweet, weepin' gee-a-zuz..... When is the lobotomized lab tech going to figure out that Lyon is simply cooked. He needs to go south and bring up our hottest pitching prospect for some innings and help. Qualls is fine as a closer for now.

Lyon's ball simply isn't moving properly, and although I'm not positive, I think he is tipping his pitches. Whatever the problem(s), he's not fooling anyone and hasn't for a long time. Throwing hard simply isn't enough. Some years age the Tigers had a closer that threw the ball at 103mph. I saw him do it at Bob... But although he successfully closed out the game, all three of our guys he faced hit the ball solidly off him. The ball was fast, but straight.

Anyway... He cannot be allowed to pitch again this year. If he does, that's Melvin's way of telling us he's given up for the year.

Lyon's second half splits have been brutal, quite unlike anything we've seen in his career. You have to wonder if something is going on with him, but usually if a guy is tipping pitches it doesn't go unnoticed for this long. The issue is that if you're looking for help from the farm, you're going to be disappointed. The Dan Haren trade as well as a couple of others really hurt the prospect pool, the higher levels are particularly depleted with Scherzer really being the only guy that did all that well. With Tucson's season over the Diamondbacks already made their bullpen call ups (Rosales and Buckner), but chances aren't good that either one is the answer.

Then randomly pick someone out of the stands to close.... They couldn't do worse than Lyon.....

I can't understand why Tony Pena has had a more prominant role than Juan Cruz since he came back from his injury.

Cruz' ERA of 2.70 leads the team. (It's the only D'backs ERA lower than Max Scherzer's 2.80.) Pena's is just under 4.00.

Every one of Cruz' stats are more impressive than Pena, except for walks.

But even with that, Cruz' combined hits and walks per inning are lower than Pena's.

And Cruz is averaging 11 strikeouts per 9 innings. Pena is averaging between 6 and 7 K's per 9 innings.

Player W L ERA G IP H BB SO

J Cruz 2 0 2.70 53 46.2 30 29 65

T Pena 2 2 3.93 68 68.2 73 17 51

Qualls and Rauch (before his nosedive) are not the only candidates for future closer on the team. Jose Cruz may be the best choice.
