Okay. But understand that Steve Breaston had 113 targets in his 1,000 yard season with us, and no less than 82 in the two seasons following.

If you're looking for a free agent with ideal size and speed and hands who will change the geometry of the offense, you're going to have to throw the ball more to attract them and/or justify the cost.
We don't need a speed guy to get 1000 yards.
We need a speed guy to make 2 catches a game out of 4 or 5 targets a game.
Not everything Breaston did was over the top... I simply used him as an example of the type of player we need...a guy who can get behind the defense at will...and catch at least 40% of his targets or better....and as an example of how it opens things underneath, we all saw that.
Maybe it's not a FA...maybe it's a 5th round draft pick

Just say "No" to Tyreek the Freak...

So who is this player you’re talking about? Would a John Brown or JJ Nelson slake your thirst?

I don't know who he is. I have not identified any real burners in the draft... kinda hoping a guy pops at the combine because all the names at WR seem to be 4.4 type guys....and it's difficult for me to watch tape on every Marshall or Lower Minnesota Baptist State to try and find a guy who can run a 4.2 in pads and still catch a few balls.
But, it's early, I may yet find him before April

How much volume do you expect the third passing option in this offense to get? Michael Wilson had 71 targets this season.

EDIT: This is the real reason why we're unlikely to attract or invest in a legit WR2.
I could see a solid number two reducing Wilson’s role.

Zay Jones is a warning sign too. Zay had 64 targets last year in 9 games, 121 the year before in 16. Comes here and has 11 targets in 11 games.

Zach Pascal is a similar story to a lesser extent. Had 385 and 150 yards before coming here. Had 19 yards in 2 seasons with us.

Same again with Chris Moore. 74 targets in 2022 for 548 yards. 35 in 2023 for 424. Bring him in to be that deep threat as he was the 2nd best deep ball receiver in 2023 and averaged 19 YPC. Guy didn't even get a snap, even with Zay out. Got cut mid season and never picked up effectively wasting a year for him.

Very much not an attractive destination for vet FA wide receivers.

Based on the fact they have a track record of success in the NFL vs the three street free agents we had in there (Lopez, Naquan, and Tonga).
Nichols and Jones were brought here and paid big bucks, so they obviously fit the system and profile. Given a year to work in our system with JG coaching them up...that is my expectation that these two guys can play better than street free agents…that outplayed them when healthy this year.
FTFY.

I don't see lacking a pro bowl player as a gaping hole. We have a pretty average DL group IMO. I want better, but that doesn't mean it is bad.
Even with a good edge an offensive line coukd doubke that guy and still stone the remaining guys we have. 2025, a year with still no passrush. Sounds fun. Again.

I don't really care about a "speed guy" or a "burner" that runs 4.2-4.3. I want a guy who knows how to get separation down field. Tank Dell wasn't a "Burner" running a 4.49 forty at the combine. However Dell excelled at route running and creating separation.

Could the Cardinals draft a guy like Tez Johnson out of Oregon in the 3rd round to be that upgrade over Dortch? Johnson runs solid routes and is able to create separation. He has that burst and short area quickness. Plus he is dangerous as a punt returner.

To take this thread in a different direction:

Lets say the top of the draft goes like PFF just mocked it:

Would you offer a TEXANS 2023 like trade offer to Carolina at #5 to get Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn St?

to refresh on what that was:

No. 3: Arizona → Houston (D). Arizona traded first- and fourth-round selections (3rd and 105th overall) to Houston in exchange for first- and second-round selections (12th and 33rd overall), and 2024 first- and third-round selections.[Trade 2]

I'd rather get Crosby for that. We're in desperate need of a sure thing.

Why would Carolina pass on Abdul Carter?

Outside of that, would I give up 16, 47, a 2026 1st and 2026 3rd for #5?

IDK, Cardinals gave up 12, 34 and 168 to the Lions for 6 and 81.

That's a tough question.

I know Steve Smith talked highly of him last year when he was evaluating the Oregon receivers. Smith said he is a total dog.

Greg Dortch had 50 targets last season. If we invest another third round pick on a skill position player who is capped for production, I'm going to lose my mind.
