Yes. I think they were cancelled, and then another network picked it up? Somehting like that.

Not another network...first-run was always on CBS, but I think a project or something fell threw for Tom Selleck, so he decided to return for one more season or so...

It was the network. The network would not commit to another season. The writers/producers of the show wanted to write a fitting ending for the fans since they didn't think the show was coming back. When the show was picked up it was a surprise to everyone.

The network had nothing to replace it and the fan reactions to the show and how it ended convince the network to bring the show back for another season in the 11th hour.

I just saw an interview with Tom Selleck and he says they have been talking about doing a sort of reunion movie where everyone sees what happened to Magnum over the last 20 years.

They didn't name the extra large prophylactics "Magnum" for nothing

Do you think that Chinese guy with the dogs ever bought Magnum a shirt reading "Mustache Rides: 5 cents"?

Glad to see this thread - One of the best shows of all time. I particulary enjoyed how Magnum would ride around in corduro shorts/tight jeans and a tight collard tennis shirt - yet when he needed it, he always seems to have his .45 pistol.

BTW, when the Detroit Tigers won the WS, did they make a big deal of it on the show? (Magnum was a big Tiger's fan, always wore their cap)

Let's face it - we all wanted to grow mustaches that great - but then realized that it wasn't his mustache... that Darn Tom Selleck was just a handsome dude. We never stood a chance.

I always shave my beard down in stages, the last being a mustache that I leave for a day or two. I don't think it looks bad, just sorta weird on me. I feel like I should be having drinks at the Blue Oyster.

Hey, if the 'stash isnt quite working for you try the Magnum PI running shorts. They are the Daisy Dukes for men.

I think it's hilarious that not a single woman (until now) has posted in this thread. If Magnum P.I. was such the chick magnet, where are all the women now?

Lots of man-crush going on in this thread, though...weird.

Ok, you got us. But whats not to love. Great car, macho mustache, great house, someone else footing the bill, lives in Hawaii, carries a gun, friend with a helocopter, gets all the hotties. Whats not to love. :notworthy

Don't you think there might be a disporportionate number of women that watch deperate houswives, sisters, dr. quinn medicine woman or some other woman-character centered show?

Magnum was the bomb.

no--because those are chick shows. Except I never watched any of 'em ;) I always viewed Magnum P.I. as a show that appealed to both genders, at the time.

Just a little teasing, Jason...geez. Pariah woulda thought it was funny.

What Magnum PI brought to the table was a "Uber" stud, with the great location - and added a bit of mystery weaved into the back story. They effectively teased the audience to this mysterious back story (Magnum in Navy Intelligence, Who is Robin Masters, etc) without ever making it a "Soap Opera" back story and cliff hangers. I really liked that.

Another thing that worked - TC and Rick. One had the transportation, and the other had the 'connections' through 'Ice-pick'.

Okay, I just watched the pilot.

It's never really explained how Magnum hooks up with Robin Masters...he's just there.

Also, Judge Reinhold had a bit part as a desk officer on the Naval base.
