Bob Nightengale in USA Today Sports Weekly is slightly less ...imaginative... than Gammons, but he's wrong a lot, so I am taking this with a big ol' spoonful of salt (while I am on my knees lighting candles and plucking a live chicken for Jobu), but today says
"The Diamondbacks plan to fire, or at least demote, general manager Joe Garagiola, who's been with Arizona from day one, if they can hire GM Walt Jocketty, whose contract with St. Louis has expired."
It goes on to say that Jocketty is getting miffed that St. Louis hasn't made a realistic contract offer - he is one of the lower-paid GMs in baseball, and the extension they offered would pay a third of what GMs in Texas and Detroit make, for example. His contract expired last month. We also hired his former right-hand man to replace Sandy Johnson.
He also says Javy Vazquez is telling friends he doesn't want to return to the AL.
