I noticed several negative comments on the play calling Sunday. I agree somewhat; consecutive Wildcats seemed a bit much unless one was going to be an RPO. Ertz was underused. What was good was the continuous improvements in the game plans. Prior to this season all game plans were very similar, making the Cards easier to defend against. They seemed to lack situational tailoring. The need to plan for McCoy may have helped accelerate to pace of customizing. I thought the weather in Chicago combined with a little post injury rust led to a game plan that looked much like the ones used for McCoy. Earlier the plan for the Rams was also impressive. I admit I was skeptical, but it seems clear Kingsbury has advanced to a higher level of coaching. Since these game plans are new to him, I wouldn’t be surprised if the play calling improves significantly once he’s had a little more opportunity to see some post-game film. Game planning and play calling are closely related. If you improve one the other normally sees improvement.
