PHOENIX - With the 24th pick of the NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns choose . . . Marcus Williams.
It might be a long shot, but the former University of Arizona star was among four players who impressed the fast-break Suns and new general manager and president Steve Kerr in a workout Wednesday at US Airways Center.
"He's skilled; he can handle the ball,'' said Kerr, a former UA standout who has known Williams for some time. "He's got long arms, so he has the potential to play bigger than he is.
"I told him the biggest thing is his jump shot. He knows that he needs to continue to work on it. Everything we do here is predicated on spreading the floor. That's what he needs to work on, and that's what he intends to do.''
How would Williams like playing in Phoenix?
"I'd love it,'' said the 6-foot-7 forward who left UA after two seasons. "It reminds me of college because they really get after it. They push the ball and are high-scoring. The fans are great. Coach (Mike D'Antoni) is really good with his players, and the chemistry is great.
"There are so many things you can say . . . plus they win ballgames.''
Williams is projected by many Web site mock drafts to fall where the Suns have their first pick - at No. 24.
The other three players who worked out - North Carolina's Reyshawn Terry, UCLA's Arron Afflalo and Rice's Morris Almond - are all projected to go in the late first round or in the second round.
"This is right around our sweet spot,'' senior vice president of basketball operations David Griffin said, not speaking specifically of Williams.
As far as being a late first-rounder, Williams said: "I think I'll surprise people. I don't pay attention to the Internet. I've been working out really well.''
Since leaving UA two months ago, he's spent most of his time in Las Vegas working out and getting in shape. Phoenix was his sixth NBA stop, and he'll head east in the coming days to work out in New York and in Philadelphia later this week.
"I don't have a home base; I'm just moving around,'' Williams said of the nature of having to work out for a number of teams. "You carry your whole life in two bags. It's hectic, but it feels like an initiation. You have to make the trips and perform. Are you willing to put all that out there to make an NBA roster?''
By all accounts, Williams did well Wednesday in front of Kerr and Griffin.
Griffin said Williams' jumper "in all fairness is the weakest part of his game. I think he knows that. If you work hard enough in this league you can improve it.''
Williams said he's working on the jump shot and on handling the ball so he can be a possible shooting guard or a backup point guard in addition to a small forward.
"Whatever position,'' he said, "I'm just hungry to be out there.''
He knows many teams are asking about his character, something that comes up with a number of players in talks with potential employers.
"They want to know what kind of guy I am,'' Williams said. "They are investing a huge amount on you, so . . .''
So his suspension at midseason does come up.
"It was a curfew (violation), and I took responsibility for it and apologized to the team,'' he said.
Kerr characterized Williams as a good guy. Griffin said, "Marcus is a very bright kid and understands what he is as a player. He knows. It's a matter of him accepting it and going from there.''
Now, after all the workouts are done, it's whether a team - including the Suns - likes him and is impressed enough to draft him.

I wouldn't doubt if Kerr drafts someone from UA.

That's damning with faint praise. :p

Our U of A fans will certainly have something to say about how much Williams under performed.

IMHO there will be guys who can make more impact at #24. If he falls to #29 he'd be worth a gamble since he does have talent. But beyond his jump shot, I'm not sure he has the temperment.

Kerr saying he needs to work on his jump shot is like the kiss of death. I would be amazed if we drafted a guard that Kerr feels can't shoot.

This has been mentioned before, but Lute Olson asked him to leave, the suns are not going to draft him.

If Williams can prove he can shoot; he'd be a talent... depending on who's there at #24, you just never know. At #29 with his size at SG, passing ability, rebounding, etc. - I'm hoping they take him but if this Draft is sooo deep as everyone says (?) then maybe you pass him up for another Prospect at #24 because you might need to wait for him to develop more range... at least for the Suns (with the way they spread court).

The guys I hope impress the Suns are Davidson and Marcus Williams; I really didn't have many recorded games of the other 2nd-3rd level guys this year but both fit into the type of Prospect that I think COULD fit well; 6'11 shot-blocking big with range and 6'7 SG with passing ability, ball handling, good rebounder at SG; can penetrate and hopefully 3PT range.

Id be very upset if the Suns drafted him, he's pretty terrible. I saw him in person playing against ASU, who was especially terrible last year, and he didn't stand out. If you can't dominate a completely decimated ASU squad, you don't deserve to be a first round NBA pick

"Terrible." That was one game. He struggled by not being the man once Budinger showed up I'll admit. He still has a lot of talent and incredible size for the 2 spot.

He's a terrific talent when drafted at the end of the first round. He's got weaknesses like every player picked at those spots, but there's no denying his skills. I'm not on the bandwagon, but drafting him wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Can we hope for Budinger with the Atlanta pick? :raccoon:

Seriously, I'd love to go big, but if the pick isn't really high Budinger looks like a terric prospect.

If that pick is in the teens, maybe. Unless of course he somehow gets stronger and learns to play some defense :D

Physically he looked like freshman, but he showed lots of skills and basketball IQ. He'll benefit from waiting another year and playing along side Bayless.

Budinger is scared of the thug mentality in basketball, so no, he is way too timid on the court. He came from an upperclass white area in San Diego and played against primarly white kids in his league, and gets intimidated out there. Budinger was the best player on our team last year but was continuously punked in the school paper by Jawann McClellan and Marcus Williams quotes, who refused and will continue to not let Budinger take over games. (Jawann already declared that the 2007-2008 team is his and "not Budingers", with the departure of Mustafa, Ivan, and Marcus)

As for Marcus Williams, he has a horrible attitude, cant handle the ball, and loves his attrocious jump shot.

As a U of A student myself, I would say that both of these players will be below average players. Williams because he lacks skill, and Budinger becuase he is scared.

Im sorry, I shouldve clarified, I only saw him in person once (at the ASU game), but saw him on TV many times, and yes he is terrible (as far as being an NBA player is concerned). Maybe he'll pull his head out of his butt and correct his weakness', but I doubt it. I think the Suns can make a much safer and better pick than him. Its not like he was super popular (from what I gather) at UA anyway, so the Suns wont be selling a bunch of Marcus Williams jerseys.

Budinger was only the best or second best freshman in U of A history (Sean Elliot). So to call him below average is a joke. Not all players are the man from day one. Once he puts on some weight and is allowed to take control of the team he won't look "scared" anymore. He got a rude awakening in the Purdue game and learned he needs to get tougher. He has stated he wants to be the best player in college basketball next year and is going to work all offseason to do it. He will be a top 10 pick when he does come out.

He had all the tools to be the man., at least offensively. He had the best jump shot, the best left hand, and the best finishing ability in the paint on the team(not only dunks). But when someone plays physical against him, he goes into the fetal position on the court, or when teammates dont find him the ball on offensive instead of demanding the ball he puts his head down.

I know the "he is only a freshman excuse" is there, but when Lute Olsen makes it publicly clear that you are the go to guy on offense and the best recruit he has ever had, you are supposed to take over games ALA Kevin Durant, your not supposed to burrow yourself in the corner and never make cuts to the basket, or watch as Marcus Williams throws up another brick. At 6-7 he cant cover anyone on the court, too slow to cover guards and physically tossed around by wingers.

Don't get me wrong, I love Budinger, I just feel as though his confidence on the court and defensive liability , way worse than Nash, are not worthy of using our NEXT years lottery pick. My argument was not that he isnt a good college player, because he is a great college player, its that he wont be a great pro.

He jumps freakishly high by the way. Ill post some pictures a friend took while they were warming up...

I understand the argument, and I stated that he needs to get stronger and improve his defense, but to claim that he won't a great pro after his freshman year is a bit premature IMO.

Williams wasnt a two guard by anymeans, he played a role similar to a point forward, especially when Mustafa wasnt on the court. The only problem was that he didnt have good basketball IQ or dribbling abilities to speak of.

I think terrible would sum up Williams pretty good. Everyone at the U of A was mad when Williams came back after his freshman year because the writing was on the wall, his game needs to massive overhaul. He needs to gain about 50 pounds and become the post player that he is, forget about the three ball and bringing the ball up.

Williams negatives- Too Skinny, Bad Attitude, Bad Dribbling, Bad Jumpshot, Bad FT%, a step slow, no left hand

Positives- Great offensive rebounder, can finish around hoop pretty well with right, room for improvement....

Sorry to post three times in a row, didnt mean too.

My bottom line is that he wont be worth the Atlanta lottery pick. He shouldnt go before 15 next year. But Budinger has already stated that he wants to stay to be a senior, so that he can play for US Volleyball National team in olympics and world championships. In the case that he leaves after Junior or senior year, I think he would definately be worth at top 8 pick.

If Atlantas pick is in the 8-14 range , Buddinger should definately be worth that. Come on, worst case he should still be better than a Mike Miller, Dan Majerle.
