A lot of teams want to post up Marion, but they have trouble with him making steals when they try to get the ball inside. If his man starts further out, it makes it possible to do a double team.

Odom is a tough matchup for a lot of guys. He's tall and quick with a nice shot. Odom averages 14.5 ppg on 50.4% shooting.

Against the Suns on Nov 19 he scored 18 on 7-14 and 3-8 from the line.
Against the Suns on Dec 8 he scored 19 on 9-14 but took only one foul shot.

Good games, but hardly killer.

Of course you do realize that it's not enough just to look at the numbers for the player who posted up Shawn Marion. Most of the damage is usually done when one of Marion's teammates comes over to help, and the opposition finds a man for an open shot or layup.

Actually, Nash and CJ seem to be very good at switching between quick doubling-down on the posting playder and covering the space. And in the game vs Sonics, Marion used a lot of fronting to defend Lewis the way Googs used to be good at. In short, so far, the Suns could contain the damage caused by the disadvantage of a small PF in Marion by good team defense. The fact that both Lewis and Odom had very high % success shooting tells you that Marion can't really defend these bigger forwards one-on-one. But as a team, the Suns can compensate for it and be successful.

Marion is an excellent player, but I'd consider moving him for a quality big man and giving JJ his extension. Marion seems like the kind of guy who will break down eventually as his game is based primarily on athleticism. He is an overacheiver and I think he is already at his peak. JJ is a few years younger and can handle the ball and play four positions. One of JJ, Marion, or Q Rich has to go, and with Marions max contract I would probably trade him after this season. Kudos to Shawn though for a great year so far... just hope the 42 mins a game he seems to get every night don't catch up with him.

Marion is healthy and is in extremely good condition. Generally guys don't lose their long term effectiveness due to overwork but due to injuries.

One of the subjects that was discussed at length last summer is that Marion is worth a lot more to the Suns than he would be with most other teams. Marion's greatest strength on offense is that he gets close to 20 ppg without any plays being run for him. He is a support player on a team loaded with first option guys. Marion is perfect for the Suns, but would not be a cure all for many other teams.

Shawn's numbers are up this season, but his style of play is no different than what he has always done. He is not a superior one on one guy who regularly breaks down his defender. Put Marion on a team without a dominant offensive player and Marion would not be nearly as effective. But put him on a team that needs a great support guy and he really shines.

Oh man. All of this trade talk right now was going to have Gee! on the war path, and I can hardly blame him. Trading Shawn Marion would be a disaster. And this is coming from someone who would have unloaded him for a bunch of mediocre players last season just to get rid of his salary.

Unless things go south in a real hurry it is totally unrealistic to expect the Phoenix Suns to trade one of their core players this season. As I said about the possibility of trading JJ it would be a public relations nightmare.

i know you're new to the board. this is exactly the sentiments expressed in trade battles on this board for the entire summer.
