Marion Tired of Suns
By: Eric Pincus

Poor Communication: It's still a puzzle why Shawn Marion wanted to leave the Phoenix Suns so badly. He was the team's highest paid player. He would get a ton of touches. The Suns were continually in the playoff hunt.

Still Marion asked for a trade and seemed flat out delighted to be shipped off to the struggling Miami HEAT.

Seeing him in Los Angeles (where the Suns fought so many battles against the Lakers) was odd but he seemed lighter and happier than he looked when he was in Phoenix.

Marion's trade demand was brewing for years. About three years ago a source close to the team indicated that Marion was on this path - it was just a matter of time.

"When it gets to a point where you keep hearing your name in trades and all this stuff - you get tired of it. Either you're going to step up for yourself or not. I just got tired of the situation," said Marion.

While Marion didn't address it specifically, the thought was he just wasn't able to adjust to the accolades thrust upon Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire while he did what he perceived to be all the dirty work.

It's sort of a chicken/egg situation. Had Marion not been so unsettled by the make-up of the team - they probably wouldn't have considered moving him. The more they shopped him around - the unhappier he became.

Key to Marion's frustration was a lack of communication.

"Sometimes you don't get the answers you want to hear," said Marion. "Sometimes you don't get no answers at all."

The only solution for him was divorce.

"I just had to protect myself. This time I thought it was time - and it was time. I just got tired of hearing my name in trade rumors - so I rolled with [the trade to the HEAT]."

Clearly Marion harbors resentment, but he wishes them well from afar (even if it comes across like platitudes).

"I was [in Phoenix] for eight and half years, man. I did a lot for that team and the city," said Marion. "We had some great times there. It's time for me to move on right now. I wish them a lot of luck. It is what it is."

What an idiot. Does he not even have the that a majority of the time it was the media that leaked his name all the time and not the organization? He's loving it now, isn't he? On a losing team that can't win with him--yeah, that'll get him that big extension.

Sorry but I agree with Marion on this point. I think the Suns have been looking for that big guy for the last few seasons and where there is smoke there is fire. Anybody who bought into that "we always listen to offers for players and take the call but that doesn't mean we are shopping him" crap is very gullible.

It's no coincidence that Marion was always the name brought up in trades. That was pretty consistent every off season which tells me the Suns have been shopping him for some time. The Suns traded the guy a couple weeks after telling him they wouldn't.

Come on...anybody would get sick of it.

Ironic, because it he might not make another all star game playing with that pathetic team.

edit.... looking at the forward list in the East, ok maybe he will.

I can't believe you have sympathy for his whining. The NBA is still a business, if he can't handle that, then he's just a whiny kid. He's paid 17 million dollars a year--who cares if his name is in trade rumors?

Ah...one of my favorite "writers"/"journalists", eric "Emplay" picnus.

Hey all, if you want to call this guy a loser, just go over to LakersGround and tell him in the forum. He's the site admin.

This guy has as much insight and expertise and John Gambodoro. This piece reads like one of Gambo's "articles".

Except Gambo can claim that he is a legit member of the media.

I would agree except for one thing. The Suns have told Marion one thing and have appeared to do another behind his back. Sorry but Marion is human and if someone says one thing but does another it's going to bother you. Now have that happen every trading deadline and offseason. Business or not, you expect management to be upfront. I think it's obvious now to everyone that the Suns front office was not being upfront with Marion. I think Marion probably suspected that all along.

So I don't sympathize with his complaining about respect and being the 3rd wheel on this team but I do when it comes to the Suns dealings or in this case back door dealings when it came to trade feelers and shopping him.

Absolutely hilarious. He's trying so, so hard to project credibility by imitating the "straight off the news wire" style and tone you see in a lot of sports journalism. But then you actually read what he writes, and (probably correctly) conclude that it was written by some high school kid who is still learning about this whole "comma" thing.

Now I see what all the fuss is over Adande. Your average Lakers fan appears to be barely literate, so of course they would laud a man who has even a loose understanding of English language grammar and punctuation.

When a player is paid 17 million, is at best the third star on the Suns, complains of being unhappy and has an opt out clause next season, of course the Suns were considering trade. Marion did not help his cause along by asking for a trade. And for clarification purposes I liked Marion.

Hey, I loved having Marion on our team. The guy brought it night in and night out. Even with the big contract he continued to try his hardest. My only beef with the situation is we didn't get a guy like Gasol for Marion. Obviously LA was willing to part with draft picks and multiple players, but it's not like we coveted our draft picks before now either. Maybe with Kerr we will keep our picks from now on. That's my hope coming out of what happened with trades this year.

Um Pincus interviewed Marion directly. Not sure what else you want.

He is not the site admin. Never was. He just posts his articles there. I remember reading him before he had any access.

Dude is a full-fledged journalist now. He has media access, just like anyone else for LA Times or what have you, and he has good sources.

Dunno what your issue is with Eric, but he's not what you are trying to make him out to be. He does post-game interviews with both the Lakers and the Clippers, and the opposing teams they play. He works very hard, and isn't some opinionated hack (Joe McDonnell, Hacksaw, Vic Jacobs, etc) in the town. Just because he got his start doing stuff for Lakersground doesn't mean he's an idiot.

Who likes Adande? I think most Lakerfans despise him and plaschke. Simers I think is funny as hell, but is a lakerhater.

Kevin Ding at the OC Register is the best laker beat writer, hands down.

Ah...well, please provide a link to anything published anywhere besides "hoopsworld". Everyone knows hoopsworld.com is a two-bit site filled with amateur "insiders".

I don't know about those other "hacks", but I know "emplay" doesn't work for a real publication, has no journalism degree and can't write.

Kudos to "Emplay" for his weekly POWER RANKINGS, though. Can't tell you how much weight I put into his evaluation.

And lets not forget he doesn't just post at Lakersground, he posts over at ClubLakers.com as well (also under "Emplay")!

Latest from HOOPSWORLD:

Giricek Headed West?

Adjust font size:

The Philadelphia 76ers officially waived Gordan Giricek on Friday, and it appears he'll be headed to the Valley of the Sun(s). The Suns were very much hoping to land Brent Barry, but the veteran two-guard is committed to returning to San Antonio following the mandatory 30-day waiting period. Still lacking size at the two, the Suns are expected to add Giricek to their roster.

The Sixers made it a condition of Giricek's waiver that he not sign with an Eastern Conference team.

This could very well be Giricek's last chance to make it in the NBA. He had a less than amiable parting from Jerry Sloan and the Utah Jazz and then averaged just 3.1 points in 12 games for the Sixers. In his absence the Jazz have become contenders again.

Stay tuned to HOOPSWORLD for more on this story as it develops.

1) I think he means "less than amicable"

2) So they're on TV now?

:biglaugh:

These guys suck. Eric "Emplay" is no exception.

Ah, OK, I threw a thermometer into the Adande pool and it came out cold. So it's Kevin Ding, then, is it? I will investigate...

More from "Emplay"

Huh? See him in Los Angeles was odd? Why? He wasn't playing for Los Angeles. I think he means seeing him in a Miami uniform was odd.

All good "journalists" use lots of dashes. Everyone knows this!

Brent Barry Decides? There are a number of reasons for Brent Barry NOT to return to the San Antonio Spurs.
Im gonna write Jack McAllum (07 seconds or less) and tell him he needs to start using all caps to emphasize words like "emplay" does.

A source close to Barry says a number of teams have tried to woo him. Recently an impassioned plea from Doc Rivers nearly swayed him to the Celtics. (Boston is expected to land Sam Cassell once he clears waivers).
Cool. I didn't know journalists were allowed to include an entire sentence in parenthesis. .

While Livingston is (was?) a very talented player, he needs a scoring guard next to him.
LMAO! At people like Donald take this guy seriously.

"He's a real journalist now! He has a media pass!"

Like I said: Amatuer hour.

Don't forget the period that should be inside of the closing parenthesis!

Let's have no more quotes from "Emplay" please. It's like reading a sixth grader's book report and it's making my eyes bleed. :(
