Mark May was just on the broadcast for the Hula Bowl...he commented on the hiring Whisenhut....he said he played with Whisenhut when they were both with the Redskns...and he thought it was a great hire as Whisenhut will get alot out of our offense. Anyway.....I googled Mark May...I knew he was an offensive lineman in the NFL....but what I did not remember was that the played for the Cardinals..and it appears his career ended while playing for the Cardinals because he fell in the shower.....more evidence that maybe we are jinxed!

Football Playing Career
May was drafted in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, where he played until 1990 and won two Super Bowls -- XVII and XXII -- as a member of the famed "Hogs" offensive line. He was named one of the 70 greatest Redskins of all time.[2]

Following his tenure with the Redskins, May played for the San Diego Chargers (1991) and Phoenix Cardinals (1992-93) During a post game shower, May suffered a nasty fall which forced his early retirement in 1993.

I remember him from that 93 team. He was a decent lineman but his falling in the shower although wierd, isn't going to fall into the proof-the-Cardinals-are-cursed category. His teammate Cunningham, the center from that team also lost a metric ton of weight and went into broadcasting. You want to talk about the Cardinals curse, (which in my opinion is a cop-out to try to excuse bad ownership, coaching, and everything else) talk to me out the incredible comeback wins in 97 and 03 which erase our number one pick. Talk to me about catastrophes like Andre Wadsworth, or how great Jay Novachek played after we let him go. May doesn't make the cut.

you can look back on all kinds of Cards, who became ex-Cards, that went on to have outstanding careers. Dave Butz, Thomas Jones, Garrison Hurst, Pat Fisher, Joe Namath,.... One of my fears is that we will add another one next year with Big. A person would have thought that in a contract year that Big would have performed at an outstanding level. It really cost him a lot of money to continue his mediocre play.

Respectfully disagree. He will get the money because there is so much out there with the new cap and so many teams have it to spend. Additionally it is a very weak class at OT and he is considered at the top of the list.

There is no curse....was just kidding. I had never heard of a guy whose career ended after falling in the shower! But..he was probably on the verge of retiring anyway...

NO CURSE! You guys are nuts.

Namath signs with the Jets instead of the Cards. Cards are 7-1-1 and then Charley Johnson gets hurt in 1966. They beat and tied champion Cleveland in 1963 but a TIE against the Giants costs them the title. Another TIE costs them the title in 1968 even though they beat the Champion Browns twice.

They beat the Cowboys 20-7 and 38-0 in 1970 and the Cowboys win the SuperBowl while the Cards don't even make the playoffs. They miss a last second field goal which would have given them the title in 1984. They're 7-4 in 1988 when Lomax career ends and they lose 5 straight.

Lomax hip forces his early retirement. Rosenbach joins the rodeo. Wadsworth blows out his knees. Jones answers the telephone.

And if that wasn't enough for you there's always this year's Rams and Bears games at the Frat House.

Good points all Duck. I would offer that instead of a curse it was a combination of poor coaching, poor drafting and trades, and poor FO and lack of coordination and BB Sr medling.

All teams have injuries and all teams lose close ones. The only time I think the Cards got screwed was 1976 when the finished 10-4 and didn't go to the playoffs becase of a two way tie w/ the Redskins whom they lost to twice that year and were eliminated. If I am correct Bill Sr let the Commish know that that was not right and the league agreed and expanded the playoff system to 2 more WC teams the next year.

The rest of those starting in 1970 when Bill took over for Stormy were poor coaching and likely a statement from the players that they didn't like the old man and the cheap way he ran his team and when it counted they weren't gonna come through for him on the big close games that counted as to whether or not they go on to the playoffs.

And what sports franchise could have 55 years of those things without being cursed? They were especially horrible while Bill Sr was away in the Navy or assisting part time in the 1950's when they went 33-84-3 so it's not just him.

This franchise has had two 9-7 seasons, two 8-5-1 seasons, a 9-3-1, 9-4-1, 9-3-2, two 10-4 and 11-3 and have never had a home playoff game! They were the first NFL team to ever win 10 games and not make the playoffs. They had a season where in a 3 game stretch they outscored their opponents 113-0 and didn't make the playoffs.

Again how can you have watched the last two home games against the Rams and the Bears game and all the kickoff returns for TD's following a Cardinal score and not believe the team is cursed?

Don't forget the crash on I-17 to Flagstaff which involved three lineman with one having his arm nearly lost. Curse? Maybe. Bad luck, without a doubt.

Oh yeah, the Pace wrestling match with his friend.

If you truly believe this, it's obvious you weren't around in the mid 70's. I knew a lot of those players and for you to insinuate that they would throw a game just to piss off the boss is utter nonsense.

Of course they wouldn't throw a game. The team is just cursed.

In 1956 the team goes 7-5 for their first winning season in 7 years and the following summer their QB gets called for two years of military duty. :bang:

Well let me clarify. What i am insinuating is that they knew how other teams around the league were run and naturally they compared the Cards to what their reliable sources had told them about it. I am not saying they threw a game on purpose. What I am saying is that come to the end of a long season and they were close to going to the next level it is possible that often their hearts just weren't in it. I am in essence raising the possiblity that they didn't feel appreciated by the old man. If your boss doesn't appreciate you why bust your ass for him when it really counts? They knew he wasn't ever gonna leave so that could have had a direct influence on how determined and how eager they were to continue the season. They may have been secretly eager for the season to end?

1965 wasn't it Duck?

No, 1956, John Roach's first year with the Cards. He then gets called for military duty.

LB Larry Stallings and QB Charley Johnson went into the military two weeks before the first preseason game in 1967.

I had overlooked that one. Thanks for giving me another example of how the team is cursed. :D

EDIT: Guess who took over for CJohnson while he was out in '67? Jim Hart.
