I got this info from mlb rumor site.

In a move that has serious implications for fantasy geeks everywhere, the Marlins sent a scout yesterday to watch Diamondbacks reliever Jorge Julio pitch. As you know, the Fish have an unsettled closer situation with Kevin Gregg, Matt Lindstrom, Henry Owens, and Taylor Tankersley candidates to earn the gig when the season begins.

Among pitchers with 60 IP last year, Julio's 12.0 K/9 ranked fifth, right between Takashi Saito and Francisco Rodriguez. If Marlins pitching coach Rick Kranitz could help Julio get his BB/9 down around 3, he could be quite an asset. Pitching in Dolphin Stadium as opposed to Chase Field would cut down on his troublesome HR rate.

The main sticking point would be figuring out how to divy up Julio's $3.6MM salary. Julio would be the third highest-paid Marlin behind Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis.

I have a solution for the Marlins payroll problem.

Send Willis for Julio. That would even save them a few bucks.

Dbacks should offer to pay a decent chunk of his salary if they send a young starting pitcher in return.

No offense, but there's no way in Hell we get Sanchez for Julio.

I agree. It would probably be a triple-a prospect that you would get in return. As long as the guy is a solid prospect though, al la Eveland, it would be ok to pay part of the salary.

If they could get Scott Tyler in return for him, I'd be pretty happy with that.

I know, just living the pipe dream, but I don't see who they would give: Olson, Sanchez, Johnson definitely not, I am not sure about Ricky Nolasco maybe not.

But here is their Top 10 according to BA:

1.Chris Volstad, rhp2.Brett Sinkbeil, rhp3.Gaby Hernandez, rhp4.Sean West, lhp5.Gaby Sanchez, 1b/c6.Taylor Tankersley, lhp7.Aaron Thompson, lhp8.Ryan Tucker, rhp9.Chris Coghlan, 3b/2b10.Kris Harvey, of

All there P's have potential especially 1-3 on the list.

they also have been scouting armando benitez ....... most would like to see henry owens win the job, but this is still a point of concern

I don't think the marlins would give up too much though - at least not at this point in the year - as they are still a building franchise with a stable of young arms that could develop into the role

What is with our closers and weight problems?

They are baseball players, not athletes. Russ Ortiz exploded like a blimp and looked fatter every game he pitched. He looked like he was sweating butter in every tight spot, which was typically in the 2nd or 3rd inning down by about four. Joe G had plenty of hits in the good old days, but his stupid contracts near the end of his tenure set this team back bigtime. One silver lining is the best minor league players in baseball. Way to go Joe G, even when you blow it, it works out anyway.

"The club has continued to explore trading partners for reliever Jorge Julio. Although nothing appears imminent, there appears to be a fair chance he'll start the season with the Diamondbacks. Arizona has talked to the Marlins and Giants as reported Thursday by mlb.com, as well as a few other teams, according to a team official."

MORE JORGE

Asked if he wants to be a closer, Julio has a one-word answer: “Yeah.”

Yet Julio, a part-time closer for the D-Backs last season but behind Jose Valverde this spring, said he is not fazed by reports that teams in need of a closer – Florida, San Francisco, Cincinnati – have scouted him this spring.

“I don’t care. I play baseball. I want to play baseball. It is just a rumor,” Julio said.

The D-Backs have scouted Florida and could have an interest in Marlins’ 22-year-old right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, obtained by the Marlins from the Mets two years ago. Petit struggled in the Marlins’ bullpen last season, his first in the majors, but has a strong minor league track record.

The D-Backs will not pay any of Julio’s $3.6 million salary this season if traded, making Cincinnati an unlikely trading partner.

From EVT, looks like we have our eye on someone.

Petit for Julio??

That'd be the biggest legal robbery since Enron. Me thinks that if the Marlins part with him, it's gonna involve a few more players on each side to even things out.

I don't know. Petit had a pretty awful season last year, even for a 21-year old (Triple-A = 4-6, 4.28 ERA, 97 IP, 68 Ks and Majors = 1-1, 9.57 ERA, 26 IP, 9 BB, 20 Ks). While he still have loads of potential, his velocity dipped into the mid-80's and, thus, has fallen far behind other pitchers in the Marlins' system. Since, when he was on, he pitches around 89-91 mph, Petit relies upon deception to get batters out. This might not translate well into the Majors and could lead him to be nothing more than a Triple-A filler.

Certainly getting Petit in return for Jorge would be a good deal but it would not be a steal by any means. It would be exactly what it appears to be; a salary dump for a player with moderate potential.

Tankersley NOW is an upgrade over Julio. The Marlins would be better off just sticking with him than trading him for a mediocre closer.

Marlins get potential closer in Julio; Petit to D'backs

Posted: Monday March 26, 2007 4:16PM; Updated: Monday March 26, 2007 4:16PM

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired right-hander Yusmeiro Petit from the Florida Marlins for right-hander Jorge Julio and cash on Monday.

The 22-year-old Petit made his big league debut last year with Florida, going 1-1 with a 9.57 ERA in 15 games. He's been a starter throughout his minor league career.

The 28-year-old Julio went 2-4 with a 4.23 ERA in 62 appearances with the Diamondbacks and New York Mets last year. He was Arizona's closer for part of the season, recording 15 saves in 19 opportunities.
