To the Nuggets for three or more future first rounders. Just reported on the front page of ESPN by Aldridge and Stein.

This is kind of weird. Why would the Nuggets do this? It doesn't save them any cap room. If the Nets felt they could match the contract, they would. So basically the Nuggets are giving away three draft picks just to be nice. What am I missing?

Ah, wait ... this way resolves the issue immediately, instead of after two weeks. Could that be it? Is that really worth three first-round picks?

I agree, that seems to be a stupid move from the Nuggets. Especially that those future picks are probably from LAC and WAS so there is a decent chance that they sooner or later turn out to good lottery picks.

a) we dont have to wait the 15 days

b) we save some cap space in the short term to go after another minor FA

we got the washington pick for our 20th pick this year and the clips pick (via orlando) for a 2nd rounder a couple years ago. cost us very little to get an all star big man. plus if kobe goes to the clips, that pick loses value.

and we dont have to wait 2 weeks for all this.

Whether the Nuggs can get Martin or not -- the stake is too high for them to call the Nets' bluff. It turned out, if the cost is to lose these picks they'd accept it while they'd have called the Nets' hand if the latter insisted on having Nene. Both sides threatened with doing something that'd hurt the other if no agreement. A compromise is only logical outcome. No?

I know how you got those picks. They are still valuable. You don't have to waste them just because you got them in fantastic deals.

DEN simply could have signed Martin.

It's still a late-mid 1st rounder. Or higher.

I just don't get why is that 2 weeks so important. Who is that big-name FA who can't wait 2 weeks?

Signing and trading ensures that the Nuggets get him. Martin signed an offer sheet yesterday. The Nuggets must have believed the Nets might match the offer sheet, probably by the Nets telling Kiki just that. Kiki wouldn't call the Nets' bluff. It was worth the picks to ensure they get him. 15 days had nothing to do with it.

now that they nuggs have locked up martin. we can give them a call and talk about that nene for jj trade. the best part of this trade is it really makes both teams better. the nuggs pick up a guard who will help them all over with passing, running and rebounding. the suns get a very promising big man to match up with amare. if some how this trade goes down it will reshape the west for years to come. the 2 brightest young teams are both running team and should have the ability to run teams out of the building. now if they can just get both team to play defense they will be scary.

Nene isn't going to be the missing piece to our puzzle if we have to give up JJ for him.

There is a reason the Nuggets offered Camby and Martin huge contracts.

I agree, Nene is going to take a long time, or will always be a back-up in the Nuggets eyes. And, he is a power forward.

we not only dont have to wait 15 days (come back in 2 weeks and see what FA are left, if any), we dont have to worry about kmart being matched AND we ended up getting him cheaper this year rather than if we gave him our frontloaded deal.

i was just looking up nene's stats and i will say it right now i am shocked. where are his blocked shots? .8 and .5 blocked shots a game? what kind of coaches do you guys have up there that this is the best that you can get out of nene? he blocked 5 shots against j. o'neall and team usa in the pan amarican games and he cant average a block a game in the nba?

How? Signing bonuses don't have cap implications.

Nene is not the answer. And I don't see why we would want to help improve the Nuggets. After signing Martin they only need is a 2, why help them out and send them a 2. We can get a 5 elsewhere.

But Johnson won't be the missing piece if the Suns have no backup C and no backup PF. ;)

Nene is more of a center than Lampe (in terms of style and experience). JJ will become an RFA next season and the Suns are not 100% sure they are prepared to match.

At this point, the only way JJ for Nene happens is if the Suns include the Chicago pick. That's pretty pricy since Nene did not show a lot of improvement over his rookie year. On the other hand, he is light years ahead of Chandler and K Brown who are so popular on this board.

Look the Nuggets would not trade Nene for an established PF in Martin. They are not going to trade Nene for a SG with potential and half a good season. It is just not going to happen.

The Nuggets sent the pick so NJ wouldn't match and Martin makes more money. The Nets had said they would match any offer sheet.

This is not comparable. The Nuggets knew they could get Martin in any case because the Nets were not going to match and go into luxury tax territory BEFORE re-signing Jefferson. In this case, it would mean trading Nene for cap space which is absurd.

Trading for JJ would solve a major concern the Nuggets have. Lenard had his moments, but he is a career journeyman with little upside. Suns fans remember how much JJ struggled at the start of last season, but I'm guessing a lot of teams see him as energing talent. (This is why the Magic kept insisting on him in the T-Mac negotiations).

As I said, this only happens if the Suns include the Chicago pick, so this would be a big price for a guy who was a bit of a disappointment this past season. I could go either way on this deal since I haven't seen enough of Nene to get a real impression (the fact that he can't defend Amare is not that relevant because neither can anyone else).

I think Nene would be a great pickup for the Suns. I just think it will take more than JJ to get him from the Nuggets. Everyone wants to over value their own players and undervalue other team's.

I would be stunned for the Nuggets to consider this and I am a huge JJ fan.
The fact is SG is a much easier position to fill than C.
