Time will tell, all we can do it wait and see what happens. TO ME, I beleive he learned his lesson. Going through what he went through at such a young age was eye opening to him I'm sure. I know people who were into drugs in their late teens and early 20's before they stopped and pursued their respected careers, what's any different?

I'm convinced there should be no issues with him going forward. He seems like that year off made him take a step back and see that it's not the road he wanted to go down. Can't get anymore excited about this pick and seeing him play with that passion and intensity.

I don't think we'll know until we know. the guy apparently blew off 2 NFL teams just before the draft, was supposed to have a big draft party. He was at the draft apparently thinking he was going first round, when he didn't he left with his posse.

So there are definitely red flags. For some reason I can't explain I have a much better feeling about us with him than I'd have ever expected, completely out of character for me with kids with his sort of baggage.

I guess it's the 3rd round pick and potential impact player stuff.

We can all hope for the Vontaze Burfict situation that the Bengals got last year. Although, Burfict wasn't a third rounder.

Skip Bayless of all people said it right yesterday, and it was the sentiment I'd had all weekend... this is really the only team where he'll fit. Having Patrick in the locker room, and around him in a city that he's been allowed to acclimate to is a huge factor, including some of the extremely high character individuals we have on the team.

I'm extremely excited to watch him make plays on the field.

I can remember if it was Bill Parcells or some other coach who said something along the lines of, "If a player shows you what they are about, you should believe them."

I think all of us are of an age where we've know folks that got involved in things they shouldn't have. Some of them manage to flip their situation. From my experience, most don't.

I'll never root against a Cardinal, Mathieu included. I hope this all works out, though I expect it to end badly. This organization rarely has taken these leaps of faith on troubled players. I hope Tyrann understands that if he fails, it may be a long time before we reach out to someone else again - even someone with fewer chances than Tyrann Mathieu has already received.

Go Cards!!!

I don't believe the trouble will come from within Mathieu, but from his posse. I know that there were discussions indicating that one of the particulars of his coming here was that he leave his entourage behind. That is a very hard thing for a guy like him to do. New celebrities often gauge their self-worth on the size and dedication of their following. Without them there is often an emptiness or void that they feel needs to be filled. The best thing that can happen is that he is kept so busy that he hasn't got time for any of his followers or hangers on. The real problem is that whenever there is a break in the work schedule, he will be tempted to slide right back into what has been his comfort zone, where he had all these followers to do his beck and call, and reinforce his self-worth.

People who are addicts always sound sincere. They are sincere. But that does not mean that they won't relapse. He has to show he is sincere by being willing to do whatever it takes not to end up in the same situation.

"Learning his lesson" falls far short of what is necessary.

When you are addicted you have to change your whole way of life, your way of thinking about everything. He has to get a new schedule, new friends, interact with family in a completely different way, new eating style, new hobbies, everything. Life dominating problems demand life change solutions.

Hopefully he has someone helping him through that kind of change.

I could be reading too far into it, but I thought his reaction to being drafted said a lot. Most guys are happy and joyful, but he was overcome with emotions and was still emotional when being interviewed about 30 minutes later.

He already lost millions due to his actions thus slipping in stock value/the draft. His contract isn't the norm, I think he knows his path is one that is straight and narrow if he wants to play professional football. This could even humble him to a point, not like Larry humble but I'm thinking he isn't as likely to go out and buy the fleet of mercedes to stick in his new 20 car garage. That kind of Honey stuff might have happened before all this, now he might just want to stay off everyone's radar and do his stuff on the field. I hope so.

He is just a kid, and less intelligent and mature for his age. He probably doesn't even know deeply what sincerity is. He is just trying to say and do the best that he knows how at this stage of his life. His demons won't disappear overnight. I am sure he wants to do the right thing, but will struggle his whole life making decisions that turn out to be that. He has had a very rough younger life and the psychological impact of that has and will shape his character forever. Hopefully, he will begin and continue throughout his life to have therapy to help him discuss, see, and understand himself. I hope the Cardinals instantly find him a quality therapist that he can relate well too.

This is what needs to happen, the remarks in bold.

I've never met anyone who is truly addicted to marijuana, if this is what you mean when you say addiction. It's a lifestyle choice, but a hard choice to break.

TM loves the game of football---you saw him crying, sometimes almost sobbing---tears of joy, tears of pain, every which kind of tears. Those tears were not an act.

He has accepted the blame like a man---and he deserves credit for taking the right and difficult steps to climb out of the dark hole he caused.

I remember all too well being 20 years old and feeling like a lost soul. That is such a delicate age---being on the bridge between childhood and adulthood and wondering if you have the strength to stay the course, especially when the bridge is swaying and you feel paralyzed with anxiety and self-consciousness.

For those of you who have climbed out from the darkness of anxiety and depression, you know how difficult it is.

Some people still think it's as easy as flipping a switch---

Boy oh boy if it were only that easy...

I commend Mathieu for putting back the pieces of his life and turning to the right people for help.

I think the Cardinals should give him a clean slate and treat him like a man.

If they trusted him enough to draft him in the third round, they should give him a clean slate---that means a great deal to people who have been humbled and who have humbled themselves the way TM has.

If the Cardinals want to test him on a weekly basis---then test all the members of the team---and maybe that will get the whole team committed to the same goals---and thus avoid the D-Wash and James Sanders (no longer with team, but...this is why) scenarios and some of thr others that no doubt are teetering on the edge.

FWIW, I was just watching NFL 32 on! ESPN when they played part of an interview with Tony Dungy about Tyrann. He said he wouldn't have drafted him after hearing everything Les Miles had done to help the young man and he still couldn't make it in school.

Was talking about this with my Cousin yesterday. The two teams he blew off were....... Seattle and Denver.

Make your own suppositions there based on recent legal news in those states and Tyrann's well documented struggles :)

Fish, I always respect & appreciate your knowledge & posts but these words are a complete cop out!

If this kid can't disassociate with his peeps for the most important job interview of his life he will never get it, but I too feel his entourage doesn't help his issues, but its Pot Badgers choice...grow up & get away from bad influences or find another job, stop blaming others for his failures.

As Russ said above, he's already shown me 2 red flags since "his so-called rebirth".
Btw I think we made a monumental mistake with this kid

Monumental Mistake just a tad overdramatic IMO.

By my count 6 of those guys are starters and about 12 had any type of impact last year. You could also make the case the Punter was the best pick (although many would argue Hilton or Foles I suppose).

A 3rd round pick is a 3rd round pick is a 3rd ROund pick. You shouldnt waste them but you shuoldnt be counting on a consistent Starter either based on the league wide numbers. Would anyone here cry if we cut Jamell Fleming in August? Probably not. Based on the recent drafts the Cardinals have drafed better in the 4th and 5th rounds anyway.

My point is unless you think Matheiu is going to get high and burn down the practice facility with a semi lit blunt then whats the big deal?

Now many will hang on to 4-5 guys that were available and they really wanted drafted instead and if one of them is good then they will say "See we should have drafted ________ instead of Honey Badger" forgetting there were 4 other players they liked that washed out and forgetting the .05% chance the Cards would have picked that player instead anyway.

And then you factor in the potential reward? Pshhhhhhh

Looks like a smart calculated risk to me.

While there are some who become physically addicted to marijuana, the issue is usually more of an emotional addiction, similar to porn etc. It becomes the means of coping with the difficulties of life. These types of addictions are powerful too, even if it doesn't produce dt's when you quit.

BTW. Just because it is an addiction does not mean its a not choice. Its always a choice and in the end its no one fault but mine.

People need to drop the whole "he's an addict" thing. Mathieu isn't an addict. If he was an addict he would be in rehab having withdrawls. It's not so much that he's addicted to smoking; it's him being young and just trying to get away with it. Trying to beat the system. That's how kids are. He's only 20 and as long as he someone to guide him in the right direction then he'll be perfectly fine.

Actually the best third round pick last year was probably Russell Wilson. Definitely much better than the punter.

I would have much rather us take a chance on Matt Barkley becoming a real good franchise qB for us, than on this kid. There aren't better CBs you can get in round 3 or later than what this kid actually is, but to me a franchise QB is worth so much more to speculate a bit on. Barkley is probably a 75-25 shot to work out good, while I give Mathieu 50-50 at very best.
