And, let's not forget - we are not privy to the Pats thinking on this issue, although, I doubt that making their former employee (Pioli) happy was very high on the agenda.
I would disagree. Bellechick is known for helping out his "tree" and this deal would never be done with another team. No way the Patriots help out another AFC team like this.

The more I think about it, my problem isn't so much what they got(which you have summed up nicely) it's that it wasn't a fair market deal. If Cassel was sitting there with the tag on his head no other team in the league would dream of offering a 2nd round pick for not only him, but Vrabel thrown in for free. You think the Jets, Browns, Vikings, etc. wouldn't have matched or exceeded that offer?

That's why I think it's unfair. Pioli and Billechick are essentially cheating everyone else. It's almost like the Patriots and Chiefs are one team and just interchanging parts any way they please. To me, it falls right into the idea that 1 owner can't own two different teams.

Why would the Patriots even think about giving the Jets a chance at Cassell? It would be like us trading Boldin to the "Eagles or Giants. It can't be done.

If Pioli and Bellechick had an agreement to take Vrabel off their hands and take Cassell who is signed for a big contract this coming season, it works out for both teams.

Remember though, for a team, getting a quality player that is under contract for 4-5-6 years at the price of the 10 year vet minimum (roughly) can be a boon for a franchise.

It very well might be considered the NFL's version of trading for a high 2nd rounder in the NBA (like for Euro's) so you can offer them whatever you want. (in other words high 2nd rounders in both leagues tend to be worth MORE than the picks just above them...in the NBA it's a guaranteed contract, I believe another year on the contract, and again the pick isn't slotted on the rookie scale so you can pay euro prospect enough to come over)

For the nfl any player you can lock up for 1-3 million a season for the duration of a 5-6 year contract that is a top 50 guy is a boon compared to a similar guy you paid 40-50 million or more for because you picked him in the top 10-15 or so. Let's you keep more of your core players that deserve to be kept, or splashed into free agency.

Thus the 34th pick is a pretty good pick. You just have to hit on it.

It's like trading Q to San Fran, Seattle or St-Louis...

Out of division... it could certainly be conceived.

the more i think about it, the more i like this trade from NE's standpoint. Vrabel will be out of the NFL within 3 years and Cassell was a 7th round pick that they just turned into a high 2nd rounder. They clear a ton of cap space and still have their starting QB. This gives them 3 of the top 47 and 4 of the top 58 picks in this draft. Plus. it gives them the ability to jump around and acquire more picks in this,or upcoming drafts. Thst is a good front office.

ESPN is reporting that Tampa Bay, Detroit and Minnesota were all offering more in a 3 way with Denver but BB gave his buddy Pioli a gift.

Except that, according to the NFL Network, Denver showed little interest in a deal which would have had them end up with Cassel and Cutler ending up with TB, Minn or Detroit..

You are right in my book. Let us not forget it is only a one year deal....this is BETTER THAN a good front office. When they gave him the 14 mil they knew just what they were doing.
